So, Christmas has come and gone, Chanukah is long over, Kwanzaa is just beginning, and New Year’s is just around the corner. Every one of us here hopes that you have or had a lovely holiday season, and will carry that loveliness into the coming year!

But no matter what your festivities may look like, one thing’s for sure: 2013 has been a year worth celebrating for the gaming industry, and for us at XSEED as well. A mere two weeks in, we got our year started less with a bang and more with a meaty squish as Corpse Party: Book of Shadows scared its way onto the North American PlayStation Store for PSP.

Months later, we released our very first physical PS3 title in North America with Killer is Dead, which SUDA51 fans (and fans of surrealistic action in general) agree is a killer good time. And we just closed off the year with a duo of handheld games for PS Vita: Valhalla Knights 3, our grittiest and perhaps most controversial title to date, and Ys: Memories of Celceta, one of our best-reviewed games in recent memory — which many rank among the Vita’s overall best offerings.

9476226788_5d9ae11e09_n.jpg10715614085_04985b5ef8_n.jpg

All in all, not a bad year for XSEED on PlayStation… but 2014 promises to up the ante, big time! Ragnarok Odyssey ACE is coming to PS3 and Vita in both physical and digital form sometime in early 2014, and it’s going to knock the socks off of anyone who weaned themselves on the original Ragnarok Odyssey back in 2012 (As well as anyone who enjoys hunting Norse giants but can never seem to find the time for it!).

We’re also working with independent localization studio Carpe Fulgur to bring you the long-awaited sequel to The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky on PSP via PlayStation Store this summer. This will continue the tale of Estelle Bright as she searches the country of Liberl for answers to… so very many questions!

We have more in store for PS3, Vita, and even PSP fans in the coming year, so be sure to keep an eye on PlayStation.Blog, as well as our Facebook and Twitter, for any announcements (not to mention the inevitable pre-announcement teases!).

Be safe, be happy, and may these next 365 days be more bountiful than ever for us all!

With 2014 fast approaching and the holidays in full swing, we, the humble dudes and dudettes that make up Aksys Games, would like to wish everyone a happy holidays and safe new year.

2013 has been a great year for us, and we have our ardent fans to thank. It’s because of you, who are willing to go the extra mile and experience new styles of gaming, that we continue to thrive. So, a big Aksys Games thanks across the Aksys Nation who have supported our endeavors and allowed us to buy the occasional “pat-on-the-back” office donuts. As we head into 2014, let’s take a look at what’s been going on, as well as what’s to come.

The year started off with a brawl (and a dash of “otome” here and there) with the release of Hakuoki: Warriors of the Shinsengumi, available for PSP and PS Vita. Playing as the six “romance” characters from the acclaimed visual novel Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, players had the chance to live the story through their eyes and fight the good fight.

In the summer, we released Muramasa Rebirth, from acclaimed developer Vanillaware, for PS Vita. With stunning visuals and high-flying action, players were able to delve deep into mythological Japan as the possessed princess, Momohime, or the amnesiac ninja, Kisuke. More on that DLC that everyone’s been talking about a bit later!

11458536554_751a57db8a_n.jpg11458487115_5bf2ee9334_n.jpg

As part of our continued commitment to bring otome games to the west, we published Sweet Fuse: At Your Side for PSP — a fun, clever visual novel featuring famed game creator, Keiji Inafune. As Inafune’s niece, Saki, players join a group of bachelors trapped in a life-or-death game to save her uncle’s theme park from the evil Count Hogstein. And maybe, just maybe, find love along the way.

Finally, we wrapped up 2013 with the release of Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God for PS Vita. This rather wacky game blends a comedic plot with challenging roguelike functions. It’s as fun as it is frustrating (in a good way, we promise).

In 2014, we’ll be hard at work bringing some of our biggest franchises to you.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, the newest iteration of the famed BlazBlue fighting game series, will be released on March 25th, 2014 for PS3. BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma is currently available for pre-order, with a standard edition as well as a limited edition that includes items like a behind-the-scenes blu-ray and a Rachel Alucard nendoroid petite.

11458488135_c2f52b0ac1_z.jpg

And Muramasa Rebirth isn’t over just yet. We’ll be releasing all four DLC packs stateside starting in early 2014 with “Genroku Legends: Fishy Tales of the Nekomata.” Each of the DLC in “Genroku Legends” is standalone, with a completely new protagonist and storyline to enjoy. Battle new bosses or fight those from the original story.

Lastly, Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi for PS3 brings the highly-acclaimed Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom to life with nearly 20 hours of additional content and storylines.

2014 will be a big year for Aksys Games as our announcements thus far are just the tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned as we introduce new titles, and we hope that you rock on with us!

Niche-focused publisher MonkeyPaw and indie localization team GaijinWorks have teamed up to produce an English-language version of Acquire's PlayStation 3 dungeon-crawling RPG Class of Heroes 2G in 2014.

The two studios previously partnered for this year's PSP release of Class of Heroes 2, which premiered as a PlayStation Network download before UMD copies shipped out to pre-order buyers in October.

Class of Heroes 2 writer and producer Victor Ireland announced that the upcoming PS3 release will feature dual-screen play, allowing players to access in-game maps and stats via a connected PlayStation Vita or PSP. No word has been issued regarding whether Class of Heroes 2G will premiere as a digital or physical release, but MonkeyPaw notes that further details will revealed "after the New Year."

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag

11514263296_e431e02887_o.jpg
Ubisoft Montreal’s seafaring epic Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag scored the Platinum award despite fierce competition from Killzone Shadow Fall. Battlefield 4 and PlayStation Store shoot ‘em up Resogun also secured award positions. Though not securing awards, Call of Duty: Ghosts and Knack saw plenty of votes!

11510265453_0765e36a01_m.jpg
Killzone Shadow Fall 11510237536_8352a654f0_m.jpg
Resogun 11510166005_c1f091f1aa_m.jpg
Battlefield 4 11510197144_74dd6b47d8_m.jpg

Resogun – Battlefield 4’s majestic multiplayer modes nearly stole the show for me, but ultimately I had to choose Housemarque’s brilliant shmup based solely on the number of hours I pumped into it. The game is almost impossible to put down.

Sid Shuman, US PlayStation.Blog

Resogun – Housemarque’s deliriously exciting retro-fabulous shoot ‘em up scorched my eyeballs and seduced my senses, taking up permanent residence on my PS4. Call me an old codger if you like, but this is gaming at its purest. Love it.

Fred Dutton, EU PlayStation.Blog

Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag — Black Flag has an almost overwhelming amount of content sewn into a breathtaking slice of the Caribbean. It satisfies every craving, from swordplay to stealth, from customization to crafting. And perhaps most importantly, your crew sings shanties as you sail. The coolness of this cannot be overstated.

Ryan Clements, US PlayStation.Blog

Resogun — The true genius of Resogun lies in its deceptive scoring systems. Just when you think you know the best route to the top of the leaderboards, you discover a new trick that forces you to completely rework your now-obsolete strategies. In Housemarque we trust.

PS3 Game of the Year 2013

11510265673_3cc4202455_n.jpg

The Last of Us

11514293223_18bc408486_o.jpg
Naughty Dog’s blockbuster The Last of Us dominated this year’s PS3 category, with Grand Theft Auto V also finishing strong. Ni No Kuni and BioShock Infinite rounded out the list of winners, though it’s worth noting that Beyond: Two Souls and Tomb Raider both saw robust support.

11510196994_76f791fdba_m.jpg
Grand Theft Auto V 11510197024_0c03cfc820_m.jpg
BioShock Infinite 11510197034_dbfd0ee513_m.jpg
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch 11510197144_74dd6b47d8_m.jpg

The Last of Us – A highwater mark for PS3, and a welcome shot in the arm for all of us after a little more sophistication and nuance from our AAA gaming. Along with Beyond: Two Souls and GT6 it might have heralded the end of a console era, but it also felt like the start of something — and if this is the direction our blockbusters take henceforth, count me happy.

– Fred Dutton, EU PlayStation.Blog

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance — Who knew that a cyborg samurai, action-RPG hybrid with stealth elements would rock so hard? Everyone. Everyone knew that, because it sounds awesome. In execution, developer Platinum Games crafted a blisteringly fast, endlessly satisfying combat engine with a fine, kung fu gloss.

– Ryan Clements, US PlayStation.Blog

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons — In only a few hours, Brothers explores the resilient human element that ties together the very best works of fiction in such a beautiful, fundamental way — and even more impressively, in a manner that only video games can accomplish.

– Nick Suttner, PlayStation Blogcast

The Last of Us – Naughty Dog did it again, surpassing everything we have seen in the industry thus far. Brutal and beautiful at the same time, with a soundtrack by Santaolalla soundtrack that’s almost too perfect. Joelbanderas.gif

PS Vita Game of the Year 2013

11510236966_a146c0a618_n.jpg

Tearaway

11514210064_6c6451d4d4_o.jpg
In a tight race for the PS Vita Platinum award, Media Molecule’s highly reviewed Tearaway ultimately prevailed. Killzone Mercenary’s strong showing earned it a Gold, while Rayman Legends and Soul Sacrifice filled out the PS Vita winner’s circle. Dragon’s Crown and Guacamelee! also scored plenty of votes, but not quite enough to place.

11510237246_fe9964d96d_n.jpg
Killzone Mercenary 11510265083_c873c128cf_m.jpg
Soul Sacrifice 11510195834_90850cafe6_m.jpg
Rayman Legends 11510197144_74dd6b47d8_m.jpg

Velocity Ultra – Tough category! For my money, Futurlab’s classy, clever blaster just pips the delightful Tearaway, Spelunky and Hotline Miami. No other game I played this year so brilliantly layered mechanic-upon-mechanic, slowly transforming you from slow-witted cannon fodder to master thumb ninja. Bring on Velocity 2X.

Fred Dutton, EU PlayStation.Blog

Tearaway – One of the most creative games in the universe, with a lovable character, awesome level design, and the best use of the PS Vita features we’ve seen yet. Tearaway should be standard curriculum at videogame universities.

Lorenzo Grajales, Latin America PlayStation.Blog

Dragon’s Crown — Garbed in eye-popping fantasy art, Dragon’s Crown boasts a staggering degree of replayability. It invites return play, tempting us with glittering treasures and stage-searing spells. With six heroes to master and secret paths to traverse, Dragon’s Crown is as rewarding as it is beautiful.

Ryan Clements, US PlayStation.Blog

Spelunky — A game about dying in the jungle in a way you can’t imagine. A thrilling economy of risk, Spelunky trades in chutzpah as much as it does in skill and knowledge. Every one of Spelunky’s pieces fits together like it couldn’t have happened any other way; it’s a Perfect Video Game, as such things go, and beyond perfect on Vita. — Nick Suttner, PlayStation Blogcast

Resogun

11514186435_ee9cecd3f4_o.jpg
A tight race between Resogun and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon ultimately went in favor of Housemarque’s addictive shmup for the Platinum prize. The newly released Minecraft: PS3 Edition and Guacamelee also scored highly, just outpacing critical hits Hotline Miami and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

11510236866_090bce398e_m.jpg
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon 11510195474_f062081d55_m.jpg

Minecraft: PS3 Edition 11510197144_74dd6b47d8_m.jpg

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (PS3) – At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Starbreeze’s daring new PlayStation Store title. Controlling two characters simultaneously, one with each analog stick, is novel. But Brothers backs it up with a story worth telling and characters worth caring about.

– Sid Shuman, US PlayStation.Blog

Guacamelee! (PS3/PS Vita) – Drinkbox threw a bunch of my favourite things into a blender – classic Metroidvania mechanics, primary colours, Mexican food, chicken punching – and came up with a predictably heady confection. In a year of cracking 2D platformers, this was el pijama del gato (thank you, Google Translate).

– Fred Dutton, EU PlayStation.Blog

Super Motherload (PS4) — There’s a special sort of fun in tunneling deep beneath the surface of Mars, collecting precious ores, and unlocking game-changing upgrades. Super Motherload encourages smart plays with ore combinations, special items, and puzzles. Highly recommended.

– Ryan Clements, US PlayStation.Blog

Spelunky (PS3/PS Vita) — Yep, more Spelunky. With the inspired Daily Challenge feature, I think I might slot it into my routine right after brushing my teeth before bed, until I’m stinky bones in the ground. — Nick Suttner, PlayStation Blogcast

Most Anticipated 2014 Game

inFAMOUS Second Son

11514293203_c5598520a3_o.jpg
Sucker Punch’s eagerly awaited inFAMOUS Second Son, out March 21st, handily scored the most votes, with Watch_Dogs, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, and Destiny duking it out for the remaining spots. Competition was fierce in this category, with strong showings from The Order: 1886, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Dark Souls II. One thing’s clear: the 2014 game lineup is looking bright indeed.

Destiny 11510164925_30b4e45fb2_m.jpg
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes 11510197144_74dd6b47d8_m.jpg

Destiny (PS3/PS4) – “Well, duh. It’s Bungie. If the epic story and seamless co-op play don’t get me, the competitive play surely will. Also: Bungie.”

– Sid Shuman, Manager, US PlayStation Blog

Transistor (PS4) – “Everything about Transistor appeals directly to my interests: a surreal, futuristic painted art style, an ominous soundtrack backed by butterfly-inducing, melancholy vocals, a clever new battle system that mixes real-time action with turn-based strategy, and the coolest use of DualShock 4′s light bar we’ve seen yet (it pulses when the sword talks!). We don’t know a ton about Transistor yet, but I’ve got my gaze fixed squarely on it heading into 2014.”

– Justin Massongill, US PlayStation Blog

Dark Souls 2 (PS3) – “Just hook it to my veins.”

– Fred Dutton, Manager, EU PlayStation.Blog

The Witness (PS4) – “I’ve been bestowed with more of a sneak peek than most, so I can’t say too much, but you also don’t need to play very far into The Witness to see the brilliance behind its puzzle design and world-building (and stunning aesthetic, of course). It’s something truly special, and even in an indie paradise of Transistor, N++, Sportsfriends and Octodad (wow!), it’s still my most-anticipated game.”

– Nick Suttner, PlayStation Blogcast

inFAMOUS: Second Son (PS4) – Sucker Punch. That is all.

This year has been insanely awesome. I can’t put it any other way. It started with the release of Star Wars Pinball, and hasn’t slowed down since. Sometimes I still can’t believe how fortunate we are that we’re able to work with so many super talented people and brands, as well as create our own unique titles — it’s beyond amazing!

We just wanted to take the time to thank you, our fans, for such an incredible year. Looking back now, Zen Studios has been publishing on PSN for almost five years. Your support has helped us come so far, and we really want to say THANK YOU.

We have a lot of awesome new stuff coming in 2014 — pinball and non-pinball related — we can’t wait to share it with you. For now, happy holidays from Zen Studios!

It’s that jolly time of the year, when the whole family gathers around the fireplace, fibrillating in anticipation of the long-awaited unwrapping ceremony, with the secret hope of finding a majestic PS4 (or better yet, a majestic PS4 AND a Playstation Plus subscription) instead of a boring wool sweater. Why, you ask? Because Resogun, that’s why!

Jokes aside, we really wanted to wish you a Happy Holidays on behalf of the whole Housemarque team! These first few weeks after the Resogun launch have been absolutely amazing for everyone involved with the project. Game ratings have been excellent, and the reaction from fans has been heartwarming, to say the least. Not a day goes by without us receiving congratulatory emails, Tweets, and tons of community love.

We love to watch Resogun fans interact. With such multilayered play, it’s great to see healthy and collaborative online discussions on the best strategies to approach our game. If you feel like you could use some tips, make sure to visit our Facebook page, where we share some hints and tips to help you improve your leaderboard standings every day.

As a company, Housemarque has been around since 1995. To this day, we always managed to make the kind of games we love to play. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but as they say, success is so much sweeter when it’s not just handed to you. The fact that there’s a lot of you out there sharing our same passion is pretty much the coolest thing ever, so thank again you for that.

Do take some well deserved time off, enjoy the festivities, and refine your Resogun skills. You’re gonna need ‘em sharp in 2014, as the competition is gonna be fierce. Also, make sure to try some of the other PS4 games. There’s a lot of talented dev teams out there that deserve your time and attention — and if you’re lucky, you might see us out there playing, too.

With that, we bid you all a Merry Holiday Season.

Ys: Memories of Celceta is a welcome addition to Vita's fledgling catalog of JRPGs. But it also has story and graphical problems worth noting.

Hey, PlayStation Nation. This has been a great year, and we’d like you to know that you’ve been a huge part of that. We’re about to close down our studio for a long winter’s nap. Before we go, we wanted to remind you that, of all the gifts we received in 2013, the chance to introduce our game to you was the sweetest.

At Bungie, all is calm, and the future is bright. We’re bringing this game to your PlayStations next year, and we can’t wait to begin this journey with you. Be safe this holiday season. We have epic adventures in store for you that you won’t want to miss.

Happy Holidays, from Bungie to you.

Welcome back to the Blog! It’s been a little over a week since we launched Doki-Doki Universe. If you’ve been reading the reviews and forums you’ll see that a lot of people have been charmed and perhaps a bit confused as to what to make of Doki-Doki Universe. It’s about as far outside the box as you can get, but quite honestly, that was the whole idea. We wanted to stir things up a bit, and offer a different type of gaming experience that had more heart and more humanity. I’m very happy with what we created, and the game is causing a lot of thoughtful discussion, which is a very good thing in this industry.

Oh right!! That’s not what I was supposed to write about (DOH!)… I’m supposed to remind you that Doki-Doki Mail, our new free messaging app is available now. You can use it to send playful animated messages to your Facebook friends on your PS4, PS3, or PS Vita and on iOS and Android devices. For PlayStation devices it comes as part of the free Doki-Doki Universe Starter Pack Download, and on iOS or Android just go to your normal app store and type it into the search bar. Here is a cute trailer put together by the folks at Sony:

THE CONTEST!

To get into the Holiday spirit, and also just for the heck of it, we are hosting a Doki-Doki Mail Holiday Card Contest starting today, and going until Sunday, December 22nd. Three lucky winners will receive a code for the Doki-Doki Universe Limited Edition Bundle for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita (which includes the Full Game, Starter Pack, 2 Personality Quiz Packs, 2 Story Packs, and 9 Deko Mail Packs – a super sweet deal!) If you have the limited edition bundle already, you can give this code to someone you like, and they will like you back.

To enter the contest, you will need Doki-Doki Mail, so if you don’t have it yet, download the Starter Pack for free on PS4, PS3, or PS Vita; or Doki-Doki Mail on iOS and Android. Create your best Holiday-themed message, take a screenshot, and upload to the contest thread in the PlayStation Community Forums. You’ll need to use a web browser to upload your screenshot since mobile browser image uploading isn’t available. We’ll then notify the winner via PSN message and the email address associated with the PSN ID you used to log in to the PlayStation Community Forums. The winners should receive their code no later than January 17th.

No purchase necessary. Must be 13 or over and a resident of the United States and the District of Columbia to enter. To see full contest info and rules and enter, click here.

To give you a glimpse into some of the fun dekos (emojis) you can find in Doki-Doki Mail, check out a few below. And don’t forget, there are additional themed Deko Mail Packs available on PS Store if you want more variety. We hope to see lots of creative Doki Holiday Cards soon!

If you decide to check out the free download of Doki-Doki Universe Starter Pack, or even better, play the full version, please come back here and leave some comments to we can see what you think; not just about how fun this game is or isn’t, but about where you would like to see gentler story-based games go in the future. What do YOU think will make games with more soul and more humanity work better? Do all gamers want action and challenge in all of their games? Also, what do you think of small indie-style games vs. bigger block buster games? What kinds do you tend to buy?

We hope you have a happy holiday filled with all kinds of joy and happiness and chocolate cake with extra frosting.

As hinted back in August by Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, we’re excited to announce that starting today, PS Plus members can begin pre-loading Killzone Shadow Fall now for a special FREE multiplayer extended open weekend from 12/28 through 12/31.

Through this promotion, the PS4 owners who don’t yet own Shadow Fall can easily try the game’s acclaimed multiplayer mode, and experience first-hand the excitement that thousands of videos and livestreams have already spread via the PS4′s powerful share functionality. Check here for current competitions and tournaments you can watch and/or participate in during the open weekend.

It’s also important for us to reiterate that the Shadow Fall multiplayer experience will continue to evolve and expand with new content and additional features. In fact, a new update will soon go live that addresses many oft-requested features, including the addition of voice chat. Moreover, all additional maps will be made available for free to ensure that the community grows without fragmenting. We’re committed to supporting Shadow Fall, and we’re excited to share more about that vision early in the new year.

Don’t forget to start pre-loading today to make sure you’re on as early as possible on December 28th.

See you all online!

NOTE: Plus members who don’t own Shadow Fall but opt to pre-load and participate in the MP open weekend will also be downloading single-player content (although MP can be prioritized to complete first). Please be aware that while this single-player content will be automatically downloaded, it will NOT be unlocked during this trial weekend.
