...New Super Mario Bros. 2 doesn’t feel like it has much "new" compared to other Mario games. I’d say New Super Mario Bros 2 to New Super Mario Bros. is like the upgrade between the original Super Mario Bros. and the original Super Mario Bros. 2 better known as The Lost Levels in the West.

Fortunately, the true Mario tradition is in safe hands in Tokyo, no doubt to return and restore our faith in some mind-bending new adventure next year. But perhaps New Super Mario Bros. should be allowed to grow old a bit more gracefully than this.

Like its DS predecessor, NSMB2 offers perfectly entertaining classic platforming action but doesn't bring much new to the mix. It's good fun, but after the sublime Wii game, it's something of a letdown; the New Super Mario Bros. concept lends itself to much more than what's contained here. NSMB2 flirts with cleverness, but plays things a little too safe to pull it off.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a fine, quality Mario title that deserves a mention in the same breath as Nintendo’s finest 2D platformers. It doesn’t hit their highest highs, but comes much closer than the other games in the New Super Mario Bros. series.

With DLC looming in the future, there's no telling just how much life you're going to get out of NSMB2, but it's pretty clear that it is more than just another Mario game.

This feels like a safe game from Nintendo; in fact, just by being a Mario title its safe. However, for Mario to continue to evolve for the next game, Nintendo is going to need some really radical and new ideas – more akin to something like Sunshine or Galaxy rather than yet another sequel.

I can’t deny that I still enjoyed kicking koopa shells, climbing fences in castles, and hopping on the flag at the end of a stage. On the other hand, players have grown to expect innovation out of Mario, and this game makes a strong case that perhaps it’s time for Nintendo to move on from the “new” formula.

Nintendo has already given an update on the coin collection status on New Super Mario Bros. 2, which has only released to the public in Japan thus far. Here are the details, which are quite huge.

- 10 billion coins
- 242 players have reached the 1 million coin mark

Man, this total is going to be absolutely insane once the rest of the world has a crack at the game!

- over 400,000 units sold in its first two days
- 41.56% sell-through
- low figure may be due to over-shipping as Nintendo anticipated demand during the coming Obon and summer break holiday period

I'd also like to think that the lower retail sales have a lot to do with the game being sold digitally as well. I wonder if Nintendo is going to make good on their word and detail digital sales.

It’s immense fun, boasts brilliant level design and offers enough repeat play appeal to keep you glued to your 3DS system for weeks. And regardless of how badly you want Mario to evolve and provide fresh and exciting adventures, that has to count for something.

"At this point, it’d be very difficult for Nintendo to get a Mario game horribly wrong. The formula has been so thoroughly refined that there’s never anything particularly disastrous about any given game. It’s easy to argue that with New Super Mario Bros. 2, Nintendo succeeds once again in making a classically great Mario game that more people than die-hard Mario fans can enjoy. "

New Super Mario Bros. 2 manages to follow in the footsteps of its forebears, but almost too perfectly, not taking any risks by mixing in fresh gameplay features.

... there are plenty of things that were great the first time you saw them, and work together to provide a pleasant experience, but there is no element of surprise, no attempt to dazzle you with new elements.

NSMB2 is yet another great Mario platform game, with some cracking new features, but it’s too similar to earlier games in the ‘New’ series to be a classic in its own right.

#importpreview Six years ago, Nintendo returned to its 2D platforming roots with New Super Mario Bros. It went on to become not only the bestselling DS title but also the third bestselling hand-held title ever (behind Pokemon Red/Blue and Tetris) with over 28 million copies sold worldwide. After a brief detour to the Wii, the series returns to hand-helds with New Super Mario Bros. 2. Does this new title recapture the magic of Mario once again, or does this series need to find itself a new magic wand? [*Note: Minor Spoilers Follow] More »
