#interview When it comes to blowing the roof off a video game genre, one couldn't aim for a more low-hanging, flimsily constructed covering than that of the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter market. More »

Sony Online Entertainment officially announced Planetside 2 yesterday, previously known as Planetside Next and the sequel to the first-person shooter MMO Planetside released in 2003. I had the opportunity to speak to the President of SOE, John Smedley, as well as the Creative Director for Planetside 2, Matt Higby, to find out what is in store for the MMO...

You know of the late lamented Corporal Smith’s exploits on the Planetside. All of us here at RPS are ragged veterans of those interminable wars, serving time in the forests of Foresal and missing drops on towers in the lost deserts of Oshur. It is with great trepidation (and after a phone interview with SOE Creative Director Matt Higby) that we can now reveal details of Planetside 2…(more…)

Speaking to SOE Creative Director Matt Higby, we have learned that Planetside 2 will be PC-only, and that it will be a straight remake of the original game with modern technology. There will be no instancing, and Higby says: “we’re only limited by how many can physically fit into a small area.” The territory capture is now far more detailed, featuring more than just towers and bases: “All of our maps are completely hand-crafted so that every square inch supports gameplay. The size of our environments is completely unrivalled.” Combat is now powered by a generative mission system, filling in some of the biggest holes in the original game.

Skills too have radically changed: ““It uses an offline time-based learning method – if you’re familiar with Eve Online, how they unlock skills, it’s similar to that.” No word on pricing or release date yet, but I am so excited I might burst. Go read the full preview.

Last night in Las Vegas SOE officially announced Planetside 2. You can see the trailer and first screenshots below, and then check back at 2pm for more details.

It’s set in Auraxis once again, and the three familiar factions are back. It’s looking very much like a straight remake. No sign of the mech things, either, but Reavers zooming about and men shooting each other very much in evidence. Go take a look.(more…)

Sony Online Entertainment announced a sequel to Planetside, a subscription-based massively-multiplayer first-person shooter launched in 2003, was in development a few years ago. The game, at that time known as Planetside Next, has been barely mentioned since. Or at least, that was the case until now. Spotted by Gamespy, the official Planetside 2 website is home to a countdown that is set to hit zero at 7:00PM PST, while a facebook page for Planetside 2 invites people to like the page...
