Welcome to Starlight Inception, a first-person / third-person space combat experience coming to PS Vita in December. It contains a single-player campaign, single-player Fly Patrol (tower defense), and several multiplayer options. The inspiration for Starlight Inception was the old space sim games that we loved as kids, but with a more sophisticated, modern sensibility.

We don’t intend the fighters in Starlight Inception to be retextures of World War II fighters, but something more modern and space capable. And unlike those older games, Starlight Inception was designed to allow flight from space down to planetary/lunar environments with seamless transitions.

In Starlight Inception, you’re a young space fighter pilot assigned to the U.S.F. Midway (SCVN-41) one hundred years from tomorrow. In the first mission (included in the beta going live today) you’ll learn about your ship, the controls, and face your first enemies. This mission is the only one included in this early Beta, but it should give a taste for what this game looks like and feels like. The intention was to really integrate the training into the overall story — stuff hits the fan while you’re learning how to fly your ship, and gets the story rolling.

The finished game (planned for December) will have more than 30 hours of single-player gameplay, and you’ll be able to explore your mothership between missions — see your bunk area, report to the captain on the bridge, and visit the Pilot Ready Room where you receive your mission briefings.

The finished game will also have a hangar bay with more than thirty different fighters, bombers, and transports, each with customizable weapons and equipment to choose from for the missions. The fighters are future versions of modern day fighters like the Lightning, Raptor, and others, and they’re made to work in both space and planetary environments.

10482573345_5a4fd00ef0_n.jpg10482758003_2218feb5df_n.jpg

There’s a deep story in Starlight Inception that plays out through the single-player campaign missions. It revolves around World War IV. You’re facing several factions of a larger organization which doesn’t agree with a United Earth — they want a national, not a world government.

We took a lot of pains to make both the United Star Force (your organization) and the Non-Aligned Nations (the enemy) realistic and believable. We didn’t want a black and white depiction of the enemies or the friendlies, and wanted to avoid the stereotypes that are usually present in these games. We wanted to depict our characters as if they were part of a very real and functioning military in a future situation.

There are ten single-player missions, each with unique tasks and objectives. In one mission, Operation: Render Hope, you’ll escort transports to the surface of Earth and into the city of Chicago so they can render medical aid to civilians. This is an escort mission that will involve repelling enemy fighters while tagging the civilian areas. Render Hope definitely has a Choplifter vibe.

In Starlight Inception, a fully integrated, second campaign has been implemented in the form of a 3D tower defense game, called Fly Patrol. You face waves of enemy fighters and capital ships advancing through Einstein-Rosen bridges (or E/R bridges), which are artificial wormholes. You can hold them off with just your chosen fighter, and/or deploy turrets for defense.

What we wanted to do with this mode was to have a unique tower defense game that used the Starlight Inception ‘verse, while giving you something else to do besides completing missions. The tower defense mode is a great casual experience, and the different missions can be jumped into quickly.

10482758113_c2efc8376d_z.jpg

There are several multiplayer modes available in the full version of Starlight Inception as well. You can select from deathmatch, capture the ball, and football mode. Each has unique challenges and have been lots of fun for the playtesters so far.

There are a lot of Vita specific features in the game — we make use of the accelerometer, the gyroscope, the front touch pad, and the sticks. Starlight Inception feels great on Vita.

The music of Starlight Inception has been composed by three time Grammy nominated American composer David Arkenstone. David had previously contributed music to World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, and is amazingly talented. It’s been a true pleasure to work directly with David to match his musical style to the battles (and quiet stretches) that occur within Starlight Inception. David’s music has definitely captured the excitement and danger of the missions.

We wanted to offer a genuine space combat experience with Starlight Inception. In order to do that, we worked with military advisors who reviewed the script and character dialogue. We’ve also entered into a licensing agreement with Lockheed Martin for the use of fighter names and the Lockheed name. This is the first time Lockheed Martin has ever endorsed a product that portrays future products with the Lockheed name, and were both honored and excited to be able to do this. We feel it really adds to the realism of our game.

10482757963_243f313295_z.jpg

Finally, we wanted to say thank you to all of our supporters who believed in our game before it was a game. First and foremost, we’re working to make good on our promises to you folks and hope we’re delivering a product that is light years beyond what you expected and hoped for. And we’re always happy to answer your questions.

Light up the sky…

Kindest Regards,
Garry, Melissa and the Starlight inception Team

A Game of the Year Edition of The Walking Dead is due in North America sometime next month, not that it's much surprise after it was rated and listed by retailers this month. To recap, then, the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC compilation includes the first season's five episodes, the 400 Days DLC released this summer, the soundtrack and a behind-the-scenes video, bundled together at a price of $30.

The official word comes as part of today's Season 2 reveal, as does a new sales tidbit: Telltale's graphic adventure series is now past the 21 million mark for individual episode sales. The new figure likely includes the 400 Days episode, given the series was at 17 million-plus back in June when it was revealed. In any case, what really matters is that a whole lot of people saw a whole lot of other people get eaten.

Renegade Kid is "aiming for Christmas" to launch Mutant Mudds Deluxe on PS3 and Vita, co-founder Jools Watsham recently tweeted. The platformer will be Cross-Buy and Cross-Save compatible, so those that own both systems will only need to purchase one copy of the game to both access it and transfer their save files to the other console.

Mutant Mudds first launched on the 3DS eShop in January 2012, and has players blasting muddy monsters as a boy named Max, a kid armed with a water gun and a jetpack. Watsham also noted that he is currently designing a "secret project" codenamed CGC alongside his work on the Mutant Mudds ports and Renegade Kid's Treasurenauts, another platformer that's slated to arrive on the 3DS eShop in December.

The cross-platform compatible update to last year's Ragnarok Odyssey will start knocking numbers out of monsters in early 2014 as Ragnarok Odyssey Ace. Both the PS3 and Vita version will cost $39.99 and include all DLC released for the original game, but launch copies of the Vita version will contain extra loot in the form of a 25-song soundtrack.

Ace will construct a new Tower of Yggdrasil dungeon filled with randomly-generated dungeons for players to bash their way through. Ace also carries an "enhanced battle system" as well as new bosses and items. Those that own the vanilla version of Ragnarok Odyssey will be able to bring over their character's "basic physical features." Weapon or monster cards will be transferable, too, as long as they aren't equipped to clothing or previously required via the Vita's Near app.

Ed Key and David Kanaga's short-form adventure game Proteus will hit the PlayStation Network next week as a Cross-Buy title for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, Sony revealed in the latest PlayStation Blogcast episode.

Proteus is a first-person, exploration-focused adventure game in which players explore a pixelated island, accompanied by a mood-setting soundtrack. The upgraded PS Vita version of Proteus features new world-generation options that produce unique maps based on a player's physical location. Both the PS3 and Vita versions share a feature that creates procedurally generated content based on the time of day.

Proteus launched earlier this year for PC platforms, and was subsequently featured alongside Hotline Miami and Thomas Was Alone in a Humble Bundle compilation.

Thomas Was Alone narrator and super-successful author, filmmaker, and actor Danny Wallace returns in indie dev Mike Bithell's next game, Volume. Wallace stars in the stealth game as a companion AI, or as Bithell directed it "the Microsoft Office paperclip as a military training program." Wallace's character is the sidekick to the protagonist, a thief by the name of Robert Locksley who has plans on becoming a modern-day Robin Hood.

In an event held today at the ridiculously apt setting of Nottingham Castle, Bithell also unveiled online personality Charlie McDonnell as the voice of Locksley. McDonnell has 2 million subscribers on YouTube, making him an interesting choice for a Robin Hood-like criminal who wants to broadcast simulations of robberies against the rich to show to the poor. The game's third cast member, playing the main antagonist, has yet to be revealed.

Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God, which tells the tale of a young, aspiring sorceress named Pupuru, will launch for PS Vita on December 10th. Pupuru is on a quest to save her friend’s curry restaurant from the big bad curry chain that’s moved in.

With the help (or not so much help) of a cast of wacky and strange characters — including the grumpy-but-lovable creature, Kuu — Pupuru’s quest to find ingredients to make the legendary curry becomes a delectable adventure fun for just about anyone.

Despite Sorcery Saga’s quirky and cute storyline, it offers players truly challenging gameplay. Sorcery Saga is more than just heading to your local curry house and eating tasty morsels of deliciousness; it’s a turn-based RPG that allows players to move freely around a dungeon in a grid-like system. Once players encounter an enemy, they’ll be able to attack or use items or skills to fend off the onslaught of creatures. Let’s delve deeper into Sorcery Saga’s gameplay and see what this game is all about!

10353694405_a3ea8c1213_n.jpg10353878243_a9bb527d66_n.jpg

Sorcery Saga is a roguelike dungeon crawler. Fundamentally, roguelike gameplay gives players permanent consequences for failing or dying. In Sorcery Saga, this means that once a player falls in a dungeon, the items he/she possesses and the levels he/she have accrued through play are all gone! Players will be able to continue with the storyline, but will need to re-acquire lost items and levels. Players will need to determine their strategy before they enter a dungeon because even saving won’t help them. Luckily, Sorcery Saga offers a couple of ways to mitigate this.

Make Your Own Curry!

Curry not only offers the backdrop for Sorcery Saga’s wacky storyline, it’s actually quite helpful while in dungeons. If players are able to acquire certain ingredients, Pupuru can make her own curry, which will give her temporary power-ups to battle particularly tough baddies.

Let Kuu Save the Day!

If Pupuru falls and Kuu is still alive, it will save Pupuru’s equipped items. This means if Pupuru has powerful weaponry equipped, she won’t lose it as long as Kuu is alive.

10353878333_bcd1a5aeca_n.jpg10353693875_1a603be279_n.jpg

My Room is Your Room!

The My Room function in Sorcery Saga allows players to store items, money, and equipment. This is particularly useful before entering dungeons since players can store unneeded or precious items. These items will be spared if a player falls in a dungeon.

Power Up Your Weaponry!

In “My Room,” players can also enhance their weapons by using acquired items throughout the game. Giving Pupuru a little boost never hurt anyone!

Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God is ready to serve on December 10th, 2013 for PS Vita. Two editions are available: a standard edition and limited edition, which includes a Kuu-shaped plate and spoon, as well as a bib featuring the little baddies of Sorcery Saga. You can pre-order now.

The global tour of Dragon's Crown cross-play culminates in Europe, after NIS America announced the patch enabling play between PS3 and Vita adventurers is live across the region. The fear was the patch would take a while longer; NIS America originally said it was "due in the coming months." Thankfully, it's only taken weeks, so Euro-friends can hack-and-slash all manner of beautifully drawn monsters in cross-platform contentment.

Vanillaware's gorgeous brawler was a critical hit with us, and perhaps slightly more importantly for publisher Atlus a commercial success in Japan, where it shipped 300,000 copies in its first week.

Sony announced an upcoming PlayStation Network sale coinciding with October's spooky festivities, bringing a selection of steep price drops and additional discounts for PlayStation Plus members.

During the Sale of the Dead, the first five episodes in Telltale Games' The Walking Dead series can be purchased for just $4.99 ($2.99 for PS Plus members), while an additional $3.49 will get you the newly released sixth episode, 400 Days. Naughty Dog's The Last of Us is reduced to $44.99 ($35.99 for PS Plus), and multiple entries in Capcom's Resident Evil series, including the recent Revelations, get up to a 50 percent price cut.

Sony's sale brings additional discounts for lesser-known horror greats like Tecmo's Fatal Frame, the collected Siren: Blood Curse Episodes 1-12, and Sega's The House of the Dead Bundle, which includes HotD 3, 4, and Overkill. May we also suggest checking out Puppeteer at its new sub-$30 price point? It's quite good, and it even has a Halloween-themed level.

A full list of price-dropped games is available at the PlayStation blog. The sale kicks off tomorrow, and runs through November 4.

"Every business-minded mate I have just took me to one side at some point and said, 'Just make Thomas Was Alone 2. Just make another platformer, improve the graphics if you want to, polish it up a bit, get Danny [Wallace] back in the studio, record a bunch more voice-overs, but just make Thomas Was Alone 2."

There's a self-deprecating air to Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell, a humble British smileyness that perhaps partly comes from the securities of today's successes, but was likely always there keeping him grounded. Despite how he put it as we chatted at the Eurogamer Expo, I doubt he didn't know just how lucrative Thomas 2 would be.

"At this point if I did Thomas Was Alone 2," Bithell continued, "I've got lots of people who would actually now buy that game at launch, and I would make a lot of money. But it's boring. And it's a decision and promise I made myself. I'm not going to use this opportunity I've been given to do that. I don't think Thomas needs a sequel right now."

"if something comes to me one day I might go back to it. Or if I make a couple of flops I might go back to that well," he giggled in jest. "I'll regret that quote down the line."
