The thing about even massive fictitious space ships is that it takes a ridiculous amount of fictitious time and fictitious manpower to construct them. Take Halo 4's UNSC Infinity, for example. It's not like you can just imagine it and it exists - no, you've got to deal with non-existent labor unions and the like.

But, hey, all that trouble seems like it'll be worth it for War Games and Spartan Ops, Halo 4's expanded multiplayer modes offering weekly co-op missions and deep character progression system.

Few expected Microsoft to unveil much of anything regarding its upcoming next-generation console, reportedly codenamed "Durango." But even those that were skeptical had perhaps hoped that at least a small tease of the things to come might be in the cards. After all, with no hardware to talk about and only a few big exclusives on the horizon, what the hell else were they going to talk about for 90 minutes?

Halo 4 made a big splash to open the show.

Tragically, those fears mostly came true during a primarily uneventful showing that offered a few glimpses of some very promising games, but also leaned extremely heavily on extraneous media apps and web browsing functionality that didn't exactly scream "let's talk about this stuff on a giant stage in front of a live TV audience!"

The show did at least start off promisingly enough, with a lengthy Halo 4 demonstration that offered some solid glances at in-game action, and a lush jungle setting that showed off some of the game's visual prowess. That was followed by the debut of Splinter Cell: Blacklist, the long-awaited next Sam Fisher adventure from Ubisoft's Tom Clancy machine. The demo showed Fisher in a terrorist encampment on the Iran/Iraq border, infiltrating a group and effectively laying waste to everyone using a new version of the mark-and-shoot functionality, complete with requisite slo-mo. The game will also feature Kinect support, as is custom nowadays, allowing Sam to distract bad guys with vocalizations and even call in airstrikes. Unfortunately, Michael Ironside does not appear to be returning to voice Fisher this time around.

This demo was followed up by an EA Sports presentation, featuring FIFA and Madden 13 and their all-new voice commands. Madden features the expected play-calling, audible-at-the-line functionality (as demonstrated by a depressingly hunched Joe Montana), while FIFA features the ability to call substitutions using Kinect, as well as some kind of swearing sensor that actually drew a yellow card when the player cursed. That seems like it'd be pretty useful for XBL chat, especially in Gears of War multiplayer.

Much of Microsoft's conference was regrettably dedicated to media apps and functionality that, quite frankly, didn't offer much excitement. The announcements of NHL and NBA live streaming via their respective sports packages, as well as the addition of several new networks (including Nickelodeon and Machinima) are fine gets, but the amount of time dedicated to these things, as well as elements like improved Bing search and the perhaps inauspicious debut of Internet Explorer on the console seemed out of whack.

The new Nike+ fitness game.

The same could be said for the company's new fitness initiative. Long-rumored and now confirmed, the company introduced Nike+ Kinect Training. The package seemed to offer all the sorts of bells and whistles you'd expect of a piece of fitness software, but it didn't exactly make for a compelling demo on stage. I mean, let's be real about this: there's probably no good way to demonstrate fitness software. So dedicating several minutes to it maybe doesn't play so well.

The one big tech announcement Microsoft did have at least turned out to be an intriguing one. SmartGlass is a tablet-and-phone-based app that allows your Xbox 360 and smart device to sync up to one another. The example shown involved someone watching a movie on their tablet, then immediately syncing that movie up to the Xbox upon returning home. In-game functionality was also teased, though little concrete information was actually shown. Presumably, it may offer similar concepts to what's been shown via the Wii U's GamePad, as well as the app functionality used in Mass Effect 3. Microsoft says that SmartGlass will be available for multiple devices, including iOS-based ones.

Among the highlight games shown, South Park: The Stick of Truth debuted a new trailer, which was followed-up by series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone offering up the only unscripted speaking portion of the morning. Their levity was a welcome break from the usual rounds of corporate speak, though no live demo of the game was shown. However, the pair did offer up a release date for The Stick of Truth. It'll be headed to stores on March 5, 2013.

Dance Central 3 was also finally unveiled, thanks to a lengthy performance by featured artist Usher, who did not actually play the game, but did actually sing while back-up dancers performed moves more or less similar to what will be played in game. Sadly, Don Mattrick did not join them on stage.

Several smaller games also received some attention. Xbox Summer of Arcade title Wreckateer got a full-blown stage demo, while Twisted Pixel's new jam LocoCycle, the new game from Toy Soldiers dev Signal Studios (Ascend: New Gods), and Gore Verbinski's game project Matter were all shown via short trailers.

Those awaiting details on Gears of War: Judgment will be waiting a bit longer. The trailer at the conference illuminated little.

That was about it for surprises, however. Lengthy on-stage demos of Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 6 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II offered more or less what you would expect from these games, which are mostly known quantities at this point. Additionally, a few brief trailers for Gears of War: Judgment, Fable: The Journey and Forza Horizon were shown. Each of those demos looked suitably strong, but weren't quite enough to overcome the prevailing sense that Microsoft really just didn't have that much to show this year.

That's not a slam against the company--after all, in a year when they had no new significant hardware to talk about, nor any major initiatives outside of additional media-ization of the console, it's tough to really come off in a huge way unless you have a slew of big games to show. And therein lay the ultimate issue with this year's conference: outside of Halo 4, there wasn't much that really seemed to blow anyone away. A handful of interesting smaller titles, and some big third-party, multiplatform games are always good to have, but in the absence of some other noteworthy surprises, the overall offering felt a bit paltry.

Random Thoughts:

  • The absence of the shrill, piercing laughter of children at this year's event was, at the very least, a welcome surprise. Only adults were allowed to humiliate themselves during Kinect demos this year.
  • Whoever applauded during the announcement of Internet Explorer does not deserve to be sitting in the audience of an E3 press conference. I don't care if you work for Microsoft. If they're not holding a gun to your head, there's no excuse.
  • Don Mattrick's hair continues to be amazing. It looks self-aware.
  • For as little as was shown of LocoCycle, I am disproportionately excited for it. Crossing my fingers that it turns out to essentially be Heat Vision and Jack: The Game.
  • No Phil Harrison on stage, which is surprising, given that he's actually kind of good at delivering these robotic stage demos. None of the guys on stage this year had much to offer, so maybe next year.
  • Anyone else notice that the conference just kind of abruptly ended? Like out of nowhere? I mean, I know that Black Ops II demo was dragging, but that seemed pretty harsh.

Look for more recaps later as we hit EA, Ubisoft, and Sony today. Nintendo tomorrow. And by all means, feel free to comment to your heart's content about everything you believe I am wrong about here. I enjoy it, really.

Microsoft opened its E3 2012 press briefing with a live gameplay demo of Halo 4. Finally, that demo is available for you to see all over again. 343's Halo 4 demo featured a slew of new enemy types, along with Forerunner-based weaponry. Other additions include Master Chief's ability to switch visor modes to an infrared mode to scan the area featured in the demo.

The demo was impressive, looking like to mixed the worlds of Halo and Metroid Prime. Check out the video above for the entire demo. Halo 4 launches on November 6, 2012.

A new trailer for the game is available after the break.

If Master Chief were a superhero in the Marvel universe, he'd probably be called Space-Man and his armor would have seen dozens of disparate artistic interpretations over the years, from 1940s Americana to bloodthirsty zombie. He could have even looked like a melted candy cane, just as he does in one of the Halo 4 pre-order bonus skins revealed for EB Games, Play and Amazon today.

EB Games (Canada) has camo-style battle rifle and festive armor suit skins, Amazon gets the "Web" armor skin and Play puts Master Chief in the "Deadeye" helmet skin. GameStop also lists a pre-order bonus, the "Forest" armor skin, but hasn't yet provided an image.

Halo 4 isn't all Master Chief and his revamped blue buddy. It's also got giant, uninhabited spaces with incredible views, as seen in the two Xbox Live Marketplace "Premium Themes" that Little English Halo Blog snagged.

The vista above - full of upside down buildings hanging precariously over a mountain range and marked with a UNSC shuttlecraft of some form - seems to be a Forerunner world of some form, but we can't be sure. As for the second screen, it looks like an engine room, but then we're not exactly future engineers.

Spartan Ops will take you to the USNC Infinity...and beyond! HAH! You see it's funny because...it's...okay, I'll just show myself out.

So today is Halo 4 news day, evidently. In addition to the details on Halo 4's Special Edition release, Microsoft additionally revealed new details regarding Halo 4's multiplayer suite. Most notably, the Spartan Ops mode.

Spartan Ops is a story-based multiplayer mode for up to 4 players that takes place aboard the USNC Infinity, the ship that acts as Halo 4's primary multiplayer hub. The missions that take place in Spartan Ops are essentially an offshoot of the main Halo 4 campaign, with new missions released on a weekly basis that flesh out the story of the Infinity, its crew, and a new team of Spartans. These missions will allow players to "explore the corners of Requiem in these objective-based missions, and help uncover the secrets of the mysterious Forerunner world."

This mode comes in addition to the previously revealed War Games mode, which serves as Halo 4's competitive multiplayer option.

I expect we'll be hearing a whole bunch more about Spartan Ops and War Games come E3, since, you know, that's kind of what E3 is meant for.

I've gotta admit, that box art is pretty rad.

With the lead-up to the release of a big sequel in any tent-pole franchise comes the inevitable and obligatory announcement of the various special editions that will come at an extra cost. For most of us, they're unnecessary, but then they're not really for most of us anyway. They're for the superfans, those who just can't live without cloth maps or plastic Spartan helmets or early access to multiplayer perks or what have you.

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft has today announced that Halo 4 will have its very own Special Edition, chock full of goodies for Master Chief enthusiasts the world over. The Special Edition, which will retail for $99.99, includes the following bonus content over the normal retail SKU:

  • War Games Map Pack Access -- These nine maps will be spread across three different DLC releases, and purchasers of the SE will be able to download them for free upon release.
  • Specializations -- SE owners will be able to unlock six specializations earlier than other players. Specializations are something Microsoft and developer 343 Industries will be providing more details on at E3.
  • USNC Infinity Briefing Packet -- This packet includes "a Spartan armor customization schematic, information about UNSC weapons, an introduction to the massive ship UNSC Infinity, and insight into what it means to be one of humanity’s finest warriors: The Spartan-IVs."
  • Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn Special Edition -- A 90 minute extended edition of the live-action digital series with additional featurettes, including a behind-the-scenes making of feature.
  • Bonus Digital Content -- The remaining grab bag of stuff includes: a unique in-game Spartan-IV armor skin, a unique in-game weapon skin for the Assault Rifle, an exclusive in-game emblem, Xbox LIVE Avatar prop, and Xbox LIVE Avatar Spartan IV armor set.

Interestingly, Microsoft has opted to forego offering an additional Legendary edition this time around. So if you want special goodies in addition to the game, there's only one version you need to be looking at.

Microsoft revealed Halo 4's Limited Edition today, and there's not a cat helmet to be found. Instead, the $100 package gets you a fancy box, a "UNSC Infinity Briefing Packet," and a host of in-game bonuses, expanding the multiplayer experience.

The LE includes the "War Games Map Pack," a voucher for "three future competitive multiplayer map packs, each including three locations, available for download post-launch on Xbox Live." It also includes early access to six multiplayer Specializations, which will only be released at launch in this package; they'll be "released over time" to the general audience.

Other digital bonuses include an exclusive armor and weapon skin, an in-game emblem, and an Avatar prop. The LE also includes an "extended 90-minute version" of the Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn video series, extra featurettes, and making-of videos.

As the November 6 launch of Halo 4 approaches, Microsoft is doling out more information about its multiplayer modes, collectively known as "Infinity Multiplayer" (surprise!). The game will introduce a brand new mode called Spartan Ops, which tells the story of the UNSC Infinity, the massive ship that serves as Halo 4's multiplayer hub (pictured). Spartan Ops will serve as an episodic continuation of Halo 4's campaign, with weekly cinematic episodes that "center on the UNSC Infinity leaders and crew, and a new team of Spartans - Majestic Squad." Each episode will include new missions, allowing one to four players to "explore the corners of Requiem in these objective-based missions, and help uncover the secrets of the mysterious Forerunner world."

Halo 4's competitive multiplayer will be known as War Games and, as previously detailed, will offer plenty of character progression and customization, such as armor specializations that enable "combat enhancements" tailored to specific play styles.

Both War Games and Spartan Ops are included with the standard edition of Halo 4, though those willing to pony up the dough for the $99 special edition will also receive 9 maps (to be doled out across three map packs after launch) and early access to six armor specializations.

Two new enemies for Halo 4 have been outed on the back of a Series 1 McFarlane toy package, dubbed the "Crawler" and "Watcher," a photo from All Games Beta shows. The box includes images of each new enemy: The Crawler looks like a hellhound stuck its head in a vat of boiling yellow glow-stick liquid, while the Watcher appears to be a moth-mounted, flying beetle creature.

343 Industries better throw a leash on these Halo 4 image leaks before All Games Beta renames itself to "Official Halo 4 Pictures For Everyone Always, Enjoy."

If you prefer your books to be light on those word things, you might want to join us in our favorite pastime - perusing books with lots of pictures in them. Titan Books will produce such a collection of images centered around Halo 4, called Awakening: The Art of Halo 4.

It's a hardcover tome of concept art from 343 Industries highlighting "characters, weapons, vehicles, and environments" from this year's installment in Microsoft's popular franchise. "This collection will provide a detailed look at the art created specifically for Halo 4, with commentary by the creative team at 343 Industries," the announcement reads.

Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 will be available at your favorite Bookatorium in November, which conveniently happens to be when Halo 4 launches.

It wouldn't be a Halo launch without a tremendous media campaign, and Halo 4 looks to be no different. The weeks leading up to the Master Chief's return this November will be filled with a new web series entitled "Forward Unto Dawn," according to Variety. Representing Microsoft's "largest investment" in live-action ever, the series will be shown on Machinima and Halo Waypoint.

Details around the series still lie dormant - perhaps buried in a Forerunner facility - with Microsoft apparently waiting to shed more light on the project at the San Diego Comic-Con this July. Using our own pervasive powers of prognostication, we're going to predict that Spartans figure into the series somehow.
