Grab your LEDs, fans, and whatever else you need to get your gaming rig ready to show off -- you only have until August 2! That's when QuakeCon will once again take over the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, with North America's largest LAN party. This year, expect it to be North America's densest concentration of irritating Skyrim jokes as well.

Those of us not taking part will be able to look forward to keynotes and other presentations, along with news and media relating to whatever is happening at iD Software -- which means Doom 4, as far as we know.

Remember when Doom was pulled off of Xbox Live Arcade over a year ago because of "expiring rights" (i.e. Zenimax acquired Id Software)? Do you also remember that Zenimax stated that the game would be back up "soon," courtesy of Bethesda? Well then, good news because "soon" is apparently today! Bethesda has sent out a note announcing that the original Doom has returned XBLA.

The granddaddy of modern shooters will set you back $5 and features both co-op and versus multiplayer via Xbox Live.

If you've been waiting for id Software to open source its retroactively titled id Tech 4 technology, first used in 2004's Doom 3, your seven-year test of patience is nearly over. John Carmack used yesterday's Halloween opportunity to burst out of a monster closet (on Twitter) declaring, "doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release."

And while seven years seems like just enough time to ensure the absence of commercial viability for the tech, remember Prey 2 will be using a modified version, which producer Matt Bisenius called "capable." We're also going to take this opportunity to prematurely mark 2018 down in our calendars, for the Rage / id Tech 5 source code release.

I do believe I promised something a bit more action-packed this week, although now that I think about it Mount And Blade has plenty of action. But I meant monsters jumping out of shadows and guns firing a staccato of panicked percussion. There are almost a million games that could scratch that particular itch, the one on your trigger fingers, but with the age of Rage almost upon us, I’ve decided to take a look at some mods for Doom. Or should that be Dooms? To the past, gentlemen and ladies, to the past.

Just in case anyone was worried that Rage might end up just being Slightly Miffed, the launch trailer, which you may have seen on a televisual device, has come along to remind us what the game is really about. Angry music and mutants being clobbered. Of course, there is actually more to it than that but it’s important to emphasise that the following things will be happening: giant mutants will clamber toward you threateningly, vehicles will flip over and explode, and balloons will deliver explosive payloads to incredulous enemies. See below for proof.

id Software just released the source codes for iOS titles Wolfenstein 3D Platinum and Doom Classic in the newest batch of updates (2.1). If you're into it, grab the source code for Wolfenstein 3D Platinum right here, the source code for Doom Classic right here, and the trailer for the 2011 sci-fi thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Source Code, here.

If you don't care how your games work, so long as they just work, update 2.1 features a revised user interface, remastered HUD, improved framerate for Wolfenstein and the removal of multilayer, which id will integrate later in a "more robust fashion."

Landmark titles DOOM and DOOM 2 received a USK 16+ rating in Germany today. Both titles were previously indexed by the Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (BPjM), which placed the games in the same commercially restrictive category as porn.

"We are obviously very pleased with their decision," Bethesda Softworks VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines told us this morning. "Can't give you details yet on when they will be available in Germany. We'll let everyone know as soon as we know."

Hines explained that an appeal of the indexing is allowed after 10 years, with DOOM and DOOM 2 having been released in 1993 and 1994, respectively. Publisher Bethesda Softworks, whose parent company acquired original developer id Software in 2009, figured it would take the shot.

This is the latest classification surprise from Germany, which recently rated Gears of War 3, after both the previous installments were indexed. Microsoft is currently looking into getting the first two games available in the country.

[Thanks, Timo.]

#rage This afternoon, in an empty conference room inside the Hilton Anatole—a bizarre amalgam of hotel, conference center, and shopping mall—John Carmack sat alone in an uncomfortable metal chair, staring straight ahead. The technical director and co-founder of id Software, the company that invented the first-person shooter genre that now dominaates much of the hard core video game industry, patiently waited to give the opening keynote of Quakecon 2011, a fan conference held annually in Dallas, Texas since 1997.
