Developed by Activision-owned studio Beenox, Spider-Man: Edge of Time challenges the player to take on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 to correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker.
Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a focused, action-packed adventure set in two connected and evolving timelines, from the contemporary times of the Amazing Spider-Man to the corrupted future world of Spider-Man 2099, against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran Peter David (co-creator of the comic book series Spider-Man 2099). The game features all-new "cause-and-effect" gameplay, where players will see how the immediate and sometimes unexpected effects of their actions as one Spider-Man changes the timeline of the other Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Edge of Time is slated for release on October 4, 2011.
Despite their different time periods, the two Spider-Men of upcoming Spider-Man: Edge of Time have plenty in common. The men behind the masks, however, sound significantly different from each other, as evidenced by the behind-the-scenes clip above.

Like a vagabond Lothario who flees from a relationship the moment it turns serious, Spider-Man always seems to leave developers just short of something really special. Neversoft never quite cracked "the perfect Spider-Man" while it had the license, and Shaba Games came within inches of it before it was shuttered.
Now, with Spider-Man: Edge of Time, Beenox is taking its second pass at the Web Head, and if the quality I saw at my PAX demo was any indication, it may be time to start getting nervous when Spidey "just runs out to buy some smokes real quick."

Why do we have freaky giraffe-necked Andrew Garfield playing Spider-Man in the 2012 film reboot when the voice of Spider-Man from the cartoons and games looks this good? More »
Full disclosure -- I wasn't holding out much hope for Spider-Man: Edge of Time. Yes, I also doubted developer Beenox on its first Spidey game (Shattered Dimensions) and that turned out great, but Edge of Time sounded cheesy. A weird villain time travels back to start an evil corporation and kill the Amazing Spider-Man? Spidey 2099 tries to stop this by talking to Peter Parker through time? The changes they make in one time period directly affect the other? Uh.....

I know Spider-Man's on-again, off-again lust interest is supposed to have bad luck powers, but with Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff voicing the 2099 version of the Black Cat, I can't help but feel like my luck's taken a turn for the better. More »
