Robot Entertainment announced today that third-person tower defender Orcs Must Die! will be published by Microsoft Studios and available later this summer for PC and Xbox Live Arcade. The developer previously gave us a window of "late August or early September."

Orcs Must Die! will be playable this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con in the Xbox Lounge, located at the Hard Rock Hotel, and Robot Entertainment will have an OMD prequel comic book available at the show.

Not going to Comic-Con, but still want to get your hands on the transmedia companion fiction that is sure to deliver Great Gatsby nuance to the Orcs Must Die universe? Don't worry, the comic will be available in a digital format "later this summer, also at no charge."

Orcs are having a hard time these days. Persecuted everywhere they go and thrown into games and films as the epitome of evil. They just can’t catch a break – they are the poor victims of a McCarthyesque witch hunt. Also, they must die. Robot Entertainment says so. Dan Gril went and had a look at Orcs Must Die earlier this year and found it to be good, if lacking a little complexity. It looks like Robo-Ents is addressing that problem and adding a lot of traps, which you can combine in any number of ways to hopefully create merry carnage. Trailers after the jump. So go on. Jump around.

Robot Entertainment's Orcs Must Die! arsenal videos continue with the fire bracers. There's only one way to cook orc: well done. Although, a little olive oil rub with rosemary and garlic does help bring out the flavors.

It's hard to define Orcs Must Die!. On paper, it's a marriage of the Tower Defense and the action-RPG genres -- but the influence of one doesn't trump the other; it doesn't feel dominated by either one of those two genres. Robot Entertainment has expertly blended the two genres together to create something new: a panic-infused experience where the player is constantly under duress.

Sure, you could set up elaborate, expensive traps to try and quell the invading armies of Orcs in Orcs Must Die, or you could go the route of your cheapskate uncle Terry: the spring trap. It's cost-effective, effective-effective and something any skeet shooting aficionado should appreciate.

Great as it is, Sanctum isn’t going to be the only action tower defense title that we’ll be gifted with this year. Orcs Must Die is arriving this summer, and is looking like a neat counterpart- dark and dingy where Sanctum was bright and shiny, and slapstick where Sanctum was all business. Our Dan Griliopolous made it sound fun enough in his preview, too, and the new trailer features exploding barrels, which as we all know is basically a seal of quality.

I actually have a plan regarding explosives barrels. If I ever make a video game I’m putting a single red barrel in it. If the game doesn’t feature guns, I will also place the game’s one and only gun next to the barrel. The moment the player shoots that barrel, their character will explode. That’s my plan.(more…)

#preview I knew that I would be killing orcs when I played Orcs Must Die at the PAX East gaming convention recently. I knew I would live, and I knew orcs would (virtually) die. I did not know I could kill them in so many ways. More »

Dan has been out in Dallas seeing what Robot Entertainment (risen from the ashes of Ensemble) are up to. They’re up to Orcs Must Die, and Dan got to play it.

It’s so easy to stereotype people. For example, everyone is always saying John’s a terrible healer. But if you need someone to provide a sop for your spiritual wounds… then he’s only a mostly awful healer. And he never claimed to be a good healer. AND no-one else here is much better; Alec thinks a field dressing goes on a salad. Likewise, it would be easy to stereotype Robot Entertainment. One might assume that they, having only recently been Ensemble Studios (the erstwhile progenitors of Age of Empires), would love doing even more minutely-researched, accurate strategy games as soon as they shook off the dead hand of Microsoft. One, if I may take the liberty, is dead wrong. (more…)

Robot Entertainment, the studio behind the upcoming Age of Empires Online, has announced that it's bringing Orcs Must Die! to "personal computers and consoles this summer." The game is billed as "a white-knuckle blend of action and strategy" and tasks players with defending their fortress from an Orc onslaught.

In addition to fighting the Orcs personally, players can also set traps throughout the fortress to crush, impale, immolate or otherwise kill the invading horde. Orcs Must Die! is planned as a download-only title for PC and consoles, making PSN and XBLA likely candidates for console distribution. Check out the first screens in the gallery below and find the debut trailer after the break.
