Your dreams have come true! Atlus has confirmed plans to bring Catherine (and Katherine), "the HD adult horror title from the makers of Persona," to North America. The game's official site pegs Catherine for release in "Summer 2011" (but Amazon offers a more precise target: July 26.)

As with the Japanese release, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will feature different box art.

  It's got ESRB RP ratings and everything! Welp, I figured we wouldn't hear about this until E3 and that a holiday release made more sense, but Atlus ain't messing around. The publisher has launched a North American site devoted to a domestic release of Catherine, the Japanese block-pulling puzzle release that's been getting a whole lot of attention lately.

OK, it's about more than just pushing and pulling blocks.

Though the official site is claiming a simple "Summer" for this "HD adult horror title from the makers of Persona," Amazon is listing a more-specific July 26 launch date on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. There's also a bit of descriptive text... 
 

Catherine is an unprecedented exploration of the pleasures and horrors of love. As Vincent, a man recently succumbed to the irresistible beauty of the game's titular diversion players find themselves swept into a treacherous love triangle. Catherine's core themes-those of free will, of the delicate nature of relationships and the choices we make within them, marry perfectly with the intense, terror-filled gameplay that serves to accurately reflect Vincent's growing sense of anxiety. It is an experience wholly unlike any to come before it. Vincent likes his girlfriend. Katherine is pretty, smart, and successful. Trouble is, she's starting to talk about long-term commitment, which is something Vincent's spent his entire life avoiding. With new complications the furthest thing from his mind, Vincent heads out for his regular night of drinks with his friends. Little does he know that he's about to be blindsided by a beautiful, seductive, irresistible freight train named Catherine. Suddenly, he's hung over in bed next to the most beautiful woman he's ever seen, unsure about the previous night's events. Was it just making out, he wonders, or did something more serious happen between them? Should he tell Katherine? Will he ever see Catherine again? Vincent's about to find that a stumble on the staircase of love can turn into a horrific, fatal plummet.

The Horrors of Love: Vincent's waking fears, doubts, pressures, and growing guilt about commitment and fidelity now gleefully follow him into his dreams, manifesting as horribly disfigured monsters and a ticking clock.

Between a Rock and a Soft Place: The player must navigate Vincent through heavy moral decisions. As in real life, hardly anything is black and white. What is the value of honesty? What is the right thing to do? Either way, someone's going to get hurt. Worse yet, someone could die.

The Nightmare of Your Dreams: Famed character artist Shigenori Soejima and master composer Shoji Meguro create sights and sounds unlike anything else. As unforgettable and original as the game's narrative, Catherine's visual direction and musical score define and perfectly complement Vincent's terrifying ascent into the dizzying perils of love.

Escape With or From a Friend: Local competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes, in addition to leaderboards, ensure that the many thrills and horrors of racing through twisted stages can be enjoyed by more than one player and add hours of extra gameplay to the overall experience.


And to think, just last week the publisher was claiming that it had no plans to release it here... don't you just hate that? As someone that imported the game to sort of mess around with it, I'm excited to actually understand what's being said, as without any sort of Japanese language training, the game is just kind of a bland block-pulling puzzle game.

Apparently, Vincent's "nightmares" in Catherine are a bit too scary. In a post on the official Catherine blog, director Katsura Hashino noted that fans have been complaining about excessive difficulty in the "Nightmare" climbing puzzle segments, even when playing on the easiest difficulty setting.

Hashino and the team wanted the climbing segments to convey the "thrill of a nightmare" and leave the player with a "clear sense of accomplishment," admitting that perhaps the staff had become too well-versed in the game to realize that it had become too hard for the people who didn't make it. A patch is currently in development at Atlus, aimed at balancing out this difficulty, so people can follow the story instead of merely falling from illusory block towers.

To celebrate the release of Atlus's inexplicable adventure game/climbing puzzle Catherine in Japan, the publisher has once again enabled PS3 users to download the demo, which was removed from PSN early this month after Atlus hit its unspecified allotment of downloads. The demo is available through Sunday, February 20, at 11:59 PM, and is identical to the previous demo.

We're almost certain that once you get the demo, you'll find it's not exactly what you expected -- no matter what you expected. Anime cutscenes are punctuated by a high-speed puzzle game in which you push and pull blocks to climb up a tower. And we don't mean it's a third-person action/adventure game or RPG with puzzle elements -- we mean puzzle game. Go try it for yourself before it disappears again.

If you keep meaning to make a Japanese PSN account in order to download the Catherine demo that came out in late January, you can cancel that intention. Atlus has removed the demo from Japan's PSN.

Notifying fans on Twitter (in Japanese), Atlus said that downloads hit the planned maximum quantity. Apparently, the Catherine demo was planned as a limited release, but Atlus didn't tell anybody that there was a limit or what it was. Perhaps the company only budgeted so much money for the PSN fees required to serve the demo. All we can suggest is that you run to your PS3 right now and download every single Atlus demo. It won't help you experience Catherine, but it will prevent you from losing out on any more demos.

You can find a small, non-playable chunk of the demo -- the opening movie -- after the break.

If you've got Japanese PSN or Xbox Live accounts set up, they're going to come in handy in the next couple of weeks, as demos for Catherine and ... Gal Gun will be available for download. January 27 will see the arrival of the Catherine demo on both PSN and XBLA, though it won't be available to Silver members until February 3.

While Catherine is odd-looking but genuinely, defensibly interesting, you'll just have to pretend you accidentally downloaded the Gal Gun demo from Xbox Live on January 21. "I just picked randomly! I can't read Japanese!"

It's "ぎゃる☆がん", by the way, in case you have trouble finding it.
