The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time hasn't stopped being one of the greatest video games ever created in the 13 years since its initial Nintendo 64 release. Its decade-spanning story, lovable characters and groundbreaking methods of interacting with a 3D world were so ahead of their time in 1998, the game still manages to outpace most action-adventure games released today. This is very, very fortunate for Nintendo, because Ocarina of Time 3D is about as straightforward a remake as remakes come.
Aside from a few neat gimmicks tied to the 3DS' hardware capabilities, Grezzo's renovation of Nintendo EAD's masterpiece is entirely superficial. In this complete aesthetic overhaul, however, Grezzo has exhibited something extremely rare for developers -- more rare, even, than the creativity and inspiration that made the original Ocarina of Time such a revelation: Grezzo designed every gorgeous inch of Hyrule with unswerving, boundless love.

Improving upon "perfection" is not exactly an easy job. Yet that's the task that falls before Nintendo and Grezzo, the co-developers of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. The original Ocarina of Time, which debuted nearly 13 years ago, was universally hailed by critics, including IGN, as one of the best games of all time. It was a milestone achievement, redefining how we viewed action games and how developers made them. "Revolutionary" is by no means an understatement...
It's no easy task to not only help develop and design one of the greatest games of all time, but then revisit it over a decade later and try to improve upon it. Yet that's exactly what Nintendo's Eiji Aonuma has attempted with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D...
For diehard Zelda fans, knowing every detail of every game is part of the job description. From the different types of Zoras to Kaepora Gaebora's tenure as an ancient sage, no detail is too trivial to gobble up. But between a recent interview we had with Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma and the newest edi...
Nintendo's regular Iwata Asks features are typically capable of dredging up some fairly magical feelings of nostalgia, but none have tapped into our happiness centers quite like the latest installment, which details the development of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Not only does it talk about the game's early prototypes (including that ill-advised, short-lived FPS version), it talks about the inspiration for some of the major revelations that made the game possible. For instance, Z-Targeting? That was inspired by actual ninjas. Seriously!
Check out the full interview for more details, like the developmental relationship between OoT and Super Mario 64, as well as a long-overdue admission that, yes, Link is running around Hyrule in long, white underwear.
This is a summary of the 8-page Ocarina of Time Iwata Asks feature that just went live.
- Aonuma didn’t come into Ocarina of Time until later in development
- Ocarina of Time originally had a jump button
- original development on Ocarina of Time started with 3 people
- Nintendo was, at one time, creating Zelda II: The [...]
A portion of a Nintendo Life review…
The N64 version is an all-time gaming classic, but this is truly the finest edition of Ocarina of Time. Is it absolutely perfect from a technical perspective? Not quite, but it is close to gaming perfection, a classic that has been refined and polished with great care. Time to [...]
Remember the secret paintings that were hidden in Hyrule Castle when you went to go visit Princess Zelda? Well they’ve gotten a bit of makeover. I caught this while playing yesterday, and now you have some screens to check out! A bit of a spoiler, so I’ve placed the goods after the [...]

Ahead of Nintendo's E3 press conference, the company has still found time to hype the upcoming Ocarina of Time re-release on 3DS with this slick new commercial, featuring short CG-animated scenes from the game. More »
I just found out a big secret about a good industry friend. Turns out that Modojo’s Chris Buffa has never beaten The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This was a secret he was holding very close to his chest, but with the 3DS re-release now in his possession, he felt the need [...]
Are you excited for E3 2011? You'd better be. There's one thing worth paying attention to after the big show, though. That would be the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. The game is released on June 19. If you don't have a calendar handy, that's just a little over a week after E3 ends...
