Yoshiaki Koizumi, producer of the Super Mario series, has his team working on a new Mario game for the Wii U, even though he didn't know what Nintendo's new console would even look like prior to its unveiling at E3. In an interview with Wired, Koizumi said now that he knows what the Wii U can do, he wants to "create a console game where two people are playing at the same time but can't see each others' screens." You know, much like how the internet operates, but without all those messy tubes.

Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma also spilled some secrets about the HD demo Nintendo used to show off its new graphics -- mainly, don't believe everything you see. "You probably remember that when we introduced the GameCube, we showed a somewhat realistic Zelda demo," Aonuma said. "And what we actually created was the cel-shaded Wind Waker. So when we show a graphic demo, people think, 'Oh, this is what the next Zelda will look like,' but that's not necessarily the case." Secrets and lies, Nintendo. Secrets and lies.

Perhaps you are already aware of Operation Rainfall. If not, a brief overview.

Not for American consumption.

Nintendo currently doesn't have much on its plate as far as upcoming Wii releases go. In fact, apart from Skyward Sword, Kirby, and Rhythm Heaven, it's safe to say that Nintendo has almost nothing on its plate as far as Wii releases go, leaving some Wii owners wondering when they may have another opportunity to dust off their little white boxes and play some damn games.

But wait, new contenders have entered the field!

As it happens, Nintendo has a trio of exclusive RPGs all currently set for Japanese release: Monolith's Xenoblade Chronicles, Mistwalker's The Last Story, and Ganbarion's Pandora's Tower. Xenoblade and The Last Story are both set for European release as well, meaning that at some point, someone's going to have to translate those games into the English language. However, as of this past E3, Nintendo had made it clear that it had no intention of selling any of these games in North America.

This has led a group of concerned Nintendizens to take up a campaign (the aforementioned Operation Rainfall) to convince Nintendo to release any and/or all of these titles here, to help ensure that North American Wii owners would not be left wanting. Letters were written, YouTube videos were made, Facebook pages were created, and eventually, Nintendo took notice, promising an update in the near future on the requested titles.

That update came last night, and, uh... well, why don't you just read for yourself?

"Thank you for your enthusiasm. We promised an update, so here it is. We never say “never,” but we can confirm that there are no plans to bring these three games to the Americas at this time. Thanks so much for your passion, and for being such great fans!"

In other words, "Nope! Run along now!"

While this statement does leave a slight sliver of hope that Nintendo might change its mind somewhere down the road, as it has in the past with other products it originally had "no plans" to release in North America (the black Wii, anyone?), the announcement is nonetheless discouraging for Wii fans who have been aching for some new, interesting games to play on their console of choice. Evidently the Operation Rainfall campaign will continue, but at this point it all seems rather moot. Nintendo knows people are interested. If they're gonna announce these games for North American release, they will choose to do so in their own sweet time. When has Nintendo ever done any differently?

In the meantime, feel free to take solace in the few Wii releases that are coming up in the next few months. I know I plan to run out and pre-order the Wii-exclusive Smurfs Dance Party as soon as I finish typing this sentence.

As you can see, some footage from the E3 2011 demo of Skyward Sword reveals something interesting. It looks like there are some other Link-like characters soaring about on their own birds, complete with Link-style tunics. Does this mean anything for the game itself, or was this just for the demo?

For a game that is so heavily focused on Wii MotionPlus technology, it's almost unfathomable to imagine The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword without it. And yet, according to the game's producer, Eiji Aonuma, that's exactly what almost happened...

#sorrylink On the final day of E3, Kotaku intern Michael Epstein and I were running on fumes. I couldn't hold a camera still and he couldn't z-target. Nevertheless, we endeavored to play all three parts of the E3 2011 demo for this year's big Wii game, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Please forgive the shakes; I think the game looks quite nice despite them. More »

The Wii U may still be a ways off from having any sort of concrete release date or identifiable games beyond the tech demo-y amusements shown at E3, and the third-party ports we still know little-to-nothing about, but that doesn't mean Nintendo ain't got some games coming over the course of the next year. After all, the console-maker does still have the 3DS, DS, original Wii, and various digital platforms still hanging around, ready to play some damn video games.

I was really worried I wouldn't get my required dose of Kirby-brand cuteness this year. Color me relieved (and pink).

Nintendo has released the upcoming release schedule for all of its various platforms, at least insofar as it's currently known. Plenty of big titles, such as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3DS, still have semi-nebulous "Holiday" release dates. However, a few biggies now have firmer dates, the highlights of which I'll run down for you before sending you off into the barely navigable wasteland of Nintendo's full lists.

On the 3DS front, Star Fox 64 has now been locked into the admittedly awkward release date for a flight-based game of September 11th. That's the only Nintendo-published game to get a firm release at this juncture, but multiple third-party titles, such as Shin Megami Tensei :Devil Survivor Overclocked (August 23rd), James Noir's Hollywood Crimes (August 30th) and Rayman Origins (March 13th, 2012) have been locked in.

On the regular ass regular DS, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 has settled on an August 28th release, while Kirby Mass Attack will drop on September 19th.

Not a ton to report on the Wii front, though feel free to scribble down on your calendar that Ubisoft plans to release Smurfs Dance Party to stores on July 19th, and, in a clear effort to tap into the too-long-ignored "unemployed shut-in with an unhealthy addiction to the Game Show Network" audience, will drop both Family Feud and Price is Right games on September 27th. Also, a company called Game Mill Publishing is releasing a game called Country Dance 2 on November 1st. I can't confirm or deny whether this is the same Game Mill that released Big Rigs, but regardless, I totally expect to see a copy of that mailed overnight to me from the Whiskey San Francisco offices, with a note attached that reads "DO THE JOB."

If you'd like to see an insanely long list of things nebulously listed as "HOLIDAY" or "2012" and sometimes even "TBA," go ahead and check out the full list of dates below. I've attempted to reformat this into semi-readable text (and even put Nintendo's first-party business up top, defying their rigid alphabetical formatting), but even still, I can barely deal with this list. For serious guys, it's super long.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the Zelda game I wanted on Wii five years ago, when the console launched. I don't mean that to say it's not good, because I sure had a great time playing it. I mean that to say that the "Wiimote as a sword" gameplay in Twilight Princess was gesture-based and awful, whereas Skyward Sword features excellent, near one-to-one control thanks to the required Wii MotionPlus.

I lift the Wiimote, and Link lifts his sword. I slash diagonally, and he slashes with me, imperfections and all. In fact, aside from some seriously rough graphical edges -- literally! jaggies ahoy! -- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is exactly the right Zelda game for Nintendo's soon-to-be-succeeded Wii console and it's oft-misused controller.

If you spend enough time with a game, even a demo, you notice a lot of details. I figured it'd make sense to assemble everything here instead...

Ever since we first heard rumors of a new Nintendo console in the works, fans of the franchise have been speculating about whether or not The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which is being developed for the Wii, would be moving over to this new platform. This is what happened to the last console Zelda title, Twilight Princess, which was initially developed for the GameCube but at the last minute had motion controls added and was also released as a Wii launch title...

With all the hubbub surrounding the Wii U, Nintendo's next generation of home consoles, the Wii got somewhat swept under the rug at the company's E3 2011 press conference. Skyward Sword is the end of Link on the Wii Sports platform, but not Wii games.

Nintendo was not answering questions about Wii U during a roundtable discussion this evening with designer Shigeru Miyamoto and other Nintendo developers. Still, someone managed to ask about Nintendo’s plans for the future in a roundabout way, asking whether The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was Nintendo’s last Wii game.

“I feel one of my biggest responsibilities is to always be developing for the newest and the upcoming platforms,” said Miyamoto. “So from my team’s perspective, it’s maybe not the last but perhaps one of the last that will be coming specifically from our time.”

“Despite that,” he continued, “there are a number of different developers inside and outside Nintendo that are working on Wii titles. And we actually have some Wii titles that we have not announced at the show that are on the way.”

Sadly, Miyamoto did not reveal what any of those other Wii games are.

Whether or not Skyward Sword is or isn’t the last game matters less to Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, as it’s likely to be his last Zelda game for the Wii.

“At the very least, Skyward Sword, obviously, is celebrating 25 years of Zelda, and in that sense I’d like to make it the kind of title that we could close the Wii chapter. I want to make it that kind of game. That’s my own personal goal, at least.”
