We've heard over and over again about the plight of the PlayStation 3 user in the weeks since the PlayStation Network was unceremoniously taken away from us. We have heard the screams of rage directed at the online brigands who robbed them of the ability to enjoy Mortal Kombat multiplayer and peruse PlayStation Store updates, their cries piercing the still air of the Internet's endless night like a mother whose child has been stolen by gypsies.

Svensson, presumably in happier times. But what of the true victims in all of this? What of the peasant publishers, who rely upon Sony's online fiefdom for their daily bread and plague medicines? Well, they're pretty pissed off too, if this missive from Capcom VP Christian "Sven" Svensson is any indication.

Speaking on the Capcom forums, Svensson replied to a user who asked about the company's stance on the matter. While he avoided taking a super-duper official company stance, Svenson expressed his own frustration and anger over the outage.

As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can't do... and likely my personal information is also compromised. Secondly I like to buy things in the PlayStation store and that I can't do right now.

As for the ramifications of such an outage for the publisher's financials, Svensson minced few words.

On a related note, as an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.

It's something that's been alluded to by other developers and publishers since the outage's first week, but up until now, no one's put quite such a definitive stamp on exactly how badly this is messing with everyone else's bottom line. And while it's certainly been easy for people to express frustration at Sony directly over their handling of the PSN situation, Svensson made it clear that the hackers responsible for the original breach are ultimately the ones that have drawn his ire.

In short, the hackers appear to be trying to "punish" Sony for some perceived injustice, and they've been effective in that I suppose. But they're also punishing millions of other consumers and businesses which makes it impossible to be sympathetic to their "cause".

As much as folks have blamed consoles for errording the influence of PC games (which, nipping your comments in the bud, clearly isn't true), console players have become accustomed to regular patches.

Mortal Kombat will be on the receiving end of a patch soon, according to a statement released to the official Mortal Kombat boards. News of a patch isn't surprising, considering the patch is meant to address some serious issues players have had with had with King of the Hill and 1v1 ranked matches.

"Thank you for supporting Mortal Kombat! Due to the overwhelmingly positive reception to the game, Mortal Kombat has millions of online matches being initiated worldwide every day, and we have run into some unanticipated technical issues. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are aware of the issues with the online gameplay – specifically with 'King of the Hill' and Ranked 1 v. 1 matches - and we want to assure our fans that we are focused on resolving online issues ASAP. We have added a 'Technical Issues' section to our forum so please be sure to let us know what issues you are having so we can address those as soon as possible. Users will begin seeing improvements in online play over the course of the next two weeks. In the meantime please note that none of this will impact the single-player or offline multiplayer experience, and we greatly appreciate your patience!"

 What's been your experience online?

The PS3 version of Mortal Kombat has a special character: God of War’s colorful anti-hero, Kratos. The fury-filled Spartan (obviously) doesn’t appear in the Xbox 360 version, but the platform doesn't its own exclusive fighter, either. But it’s not like Ed Boon and the rest of NetherRealm didn’t think about it

"I'm not allowed to talk too much about it, but I can tell you we certainly wanted to do an exclusive for 360, but that's all I can say,” Boon told Eurogamer in a recent interview. “It was not a decision we made where we said, oh, let's not do one for the 360,” he said.

According to Boon, “circumstances” got in the way of an exclusive. Whether those were licensing issues or other contractual problems, it’s hard to say because Boon won't actually say.

NetherRealm did at least get into some form of discussion stage about what kind of dudes they’d like to bring into the Xbox 360 version. “Anybody who's really knowledgeable about the Xbox video games, the big titles, names like Master Chief from Halo, Marcus Fenix from Gears of War, and any other Xbox exclusive title, is going to come up in a conversation in talking about it. So clearly we've discussed it."

Team Ninja famously wanted to get Master Chief in its fighting game Dead or Alive 4. Instead of giving it Chief, Bungie created and then allowed Team Ninja to drop put a female, Chief-ish variant named Nicole into the game.

The good news here is the omission of Kratos in the Xbox 360 version is pretty moot. Jeff scored Mortal Kombat, which is debuting on store shelves today, a perfect five-out-of-five-stars in his review.
