Now that 2010 is drawing to close, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our fantastic community members, as well as all of our friends in the media who continue to support LittleBigPlanet. We’re now less than a month away from our January 18th release and I’m thrilled to report that LittleBigPlanet 2 has now ‘gone gold,’ meaning the game is 100% finished! The wait is nearly over and as you might imagine the folks at Media Molecule are extremely excited.

New Storyline Trailer!
I’m sure you’ve seen all of the videos for LittleBigPlanet 2 and enjoyed learning about all of the new gameplay elements in the game. Well, we have another great trailer for you, especially for those fans out there who fell in love with Sackboy’s adventure, the cast of characters, and the world of the first LittleBigPlanet. Check it out above.

First Review!
The next piece of good news is that LittleBigPlanet 2 reviews are starting to come in. Online reviews won’t be posted until after the new year, but print magazine impressions will trickle in over the next few weeks and that started this week with our first worldwide review from the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine — an impressive 10 out of 10! Here are a few choice quotes…

“Full of simple-to-grasp tools, all with huge potential—and you could easily lose more time to LBP2 than any other game released in 2011.”

“Never going to build anything at all? This is still an indispensible package, rammed with creative potential and imaginative gameplay.”

Free Demo Today!
Don’t forget that the LittleBigPlanet 2 Story Mode Demo will be available on the PlayStation Store later today. Here’s your chance to experience a few of the new gameplay additions, like the Grapple Hook and Sackbots, and also meet some of the new characters who will be joining you on your epic Sack-quest.

We've seen LittleBigPlanet 2's vast suite of level creation tools being used to create some pretty remarkable stuff -- it should come as no surprise that Media Molecule has used it to create what looks to be a pretty epic adventure. Check out the new "Storyline" featurette after the jump.

Though the untold millions of new levels which the LittleBigPlanet community will almost certainly churn out have yet to be created, the sequel to Media Molecule's 2008 platformer is completely in the bag. The developer has announced that LittleBigPlanet 2 has gone gold, revealing that the DIY title will arrive in Continental Europe on January 19, followed by its release in Australia and New Zealand the following day and in the UK and Ireland that Friday, January 21. These dates coincide with the North American launch date on January 18, which is great, because the more pedestrians we have making levels for us, the merrier.

If you're finding it difficult to wrap your brain meat around the month standing between you and Sackboy's next outing, you'll be relieved to learn that a demo for the game is set to launch today on the North American PlayStation Store and tomorrow following the European PSN update. Get your creative caps on, everybody! Also, your creative pants.

Even though we should be totally used to seeing insane feats of game design in LittleBigPlanet 2, we're still amazed by this Marvel vs. Capcom-style fighting game created by beta player "POLLOIZARRARAZ43." The stage, inspired by Resident Evil's Umbrella Mansion, is awesome, and introduced with dramatic camera movement, and the game's existing Marvel costumes are put to great use to create a character lineup.

But neither of those features is the best part. The best part is how, after all this buildup, the round starts and it instantly devolves into a rapid-fire Sackboy slap fight -- punctuated by impressive special moves. Really!

Sony and Media Molecule have remained relatively tight-lipped on whether their even-more-customizable platformer, LittleBigPlanet 2, would feature the kind of 3D support that's quickly becoming a mainstay for major PS3 releases. Though we've heard a few reports to the contrary from Sony in the past, SCEA marketing manager Mark Valledor recently responded to a PlayStation.Blog commenter who asked whether LBP 2 would feature the eye-popping tech, explaining, "Sorry, no 3D this time around."

We've contacted Sony and Media Molecule to find out if Valledor's statement is on the level, and to see what he meant by "this time around." Is he hinting at the limited, future release of LittleBigPlanet 2: This Time For People With Really Expensive Televisions Edition? Hopefully, we'll find out soon enough.

On January 18, Media Molecule will launch Griffin McElroy's 2011 Game of the Year, LittleBigPlanet 2. Some people are lucky enough to be in the beta right now, supping on the game's alluring blend of platforming and secret spices before they must pay to do so. If you're one of those lucky few, we'd like to inform you of a new feature in the beta: voice recording.

In a pre-launch update on the PlayStation Blog, Mark Valledor, marketing manager at SCEA, offered a tutorial video showing how users can record voices in the game and assign them to character. The video in question (which the screen above this text was taken from) was made by YouTube user Sackinima and sums voice recording up pretty well, so we've gone ahead and embedded it past the break -- fast forward to 2:30 for the good stuff.

Today, Media Molecule unveiled the latest (verb)-inator device (after the Creatinator and the Grabinator) usable in LittleBigPlanet 2: the Controlinator. This device allows objects to be controlled directly, instead of by complicated arrangements of switches.

We're excited by the possibility of better vehicle implementations in player made games, but at the same time ... there are starting to be a lot of -inators for us to learn. Hopefully the next device revealed will be some kind of Educinator.

Sure, the release of LittleBigPlanet 2 got bumped to next year -- but that doesn't mean you won't get to play it before 2010 expires. Yes, we're talking about time travel. Are you down? No? Well, we guess you could just download the LBP2 demo that Sony has announced will launch December 21. The sample will give players access to a select sliver of the Story mode -- and all the new gameplay mechanics therein.

Of course, for the full "Play, Create, Share" experience, you're going to have to receive one of the beta invitations going out in the next batch, which Media Molecule will send out early next month. This wave will include PlayStation Plus subscribers and community contributors, as well as a few random giveaway winners -- so if you're hoping to get on board, you might want to get on that Plus train, become an LBP creation maven and/or get really lucky.

One of the promises we made after moving the LittleBigPlanet 2 release date was that we’d find a way to give you all additional LittleBigPlanet goodness ahead of the new game’s January 18 release date. Well, now I’m pleased to share the good news with you. Here’s what we have in store…

5186388928_60ae0fd272.jpg

Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves

This is a brand new spin-off PSN title that showcases all of the fun that can be had when Sackboy gets his hands on the PlayStation Move motion controller. Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves contains a brand new 10 level theme dominated by dinosaurs, where the Evil Big Rex is king. Throughout your mission you must take on challenges engineered by Terrance Dactyl – and you’re going to some need help, so put on your bear skins and grab up to four friends to navigate the tough terrain of the tropical jungle dodging erupting volcanoes and other environmental hazards standing in your way.

The player with the PlayStation Move controller leads the charge, flicking switches and triggering platforms to help the other players, using DualShock Controllers, through each level. Leap between Dino heads, use the Move controller to blast aside crates of bubbles, ride dinosaurs through prehistoric cities, and take to the heights of tree canopies—then team up to defeat Big Rex, all while collecting Trophies along the way.

5186388812_8291fe7e58_m.jpg 5185787063_d098c7d365_m.jpg

Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves is completely standalone – it doesn’t require the original LittleBigPlanet game or LittleBigPlanet 2 to run. What you will need is one PlayStation Move controller (and the PlayStation Eye camera, of course) and at least one friend with a DualShock Controller – since it is a Move-required and multiplayer-only co-op experience. The game will also be included on the LittleBigPlanet 2 disc when it is released on January 18.

But, for everyone who’s desperate to have some motion-controlled fun with Sackboy before then, and for the new PS3 and Move owners who haven’t yet gotten acquainted with our stitched-together friend, Sackboy – Sackboy’s
Prehistoric Moves will be available on the PlayStation Store on December 14 for $5.99.

That’s not all though! A week earlier, on December 7, all PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves for free! And, as an extra “thank you,” thousands of LittleBigPlanet supporters will receive Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves for free; stay tuned for more details
as we get closer to December 7.

For all you Move fans, Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves is a lot of fun, but it only scratches the surface of what’s possible when PlayStation Move and LittleBigPlanet team up, so keep an eye out for more updates after the release of LittleBigPlanet 2.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Story Mode Demo

Now for some more great news…there will be a LittleBigPlanet 2 PSN demo coming your way on December 21! This demo will give everyone a taste of the new Story Mode in LittleBigPlanet 2, along with our new gameplay mechanics – including CREATE! Swing from different objects with the Grapple
Hook, rescue helpless Sackbots, and experience the chaotic multiplayer fun that blows up when the competitive scoring mode is coupled with Sacboys and Sackgirls armed with
the new Creatinator! The LittleBigPlanet 2 Story Mode demo will be available on the PlayStation Store on December 21, so keep an eye on the calendar.

LittleBigPlanet 2 Beta Trial

Over the past few weeks, it’s truly been astonishing to see the creations that have come out of the LittleBigPlanet 2 beta trial. In fact, we’ve been so impressed, we’re going to expand the beta trial a bit further, so in early December, a new batch of invitations will go out, including PlayStation Plus subscribers, more community contributors, and even some giveaways. Stay tuned early next month for more info!

So, to summarize all of the above…

  • Early December—A new batch of beta trial invites will be sent out to PlayStation Plus members and more! (exact date tbd)
  • December 7—PlayStation Plus subscribers and a big bunch of LBP supporters will get Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves for free!
  • December 14—Sackboy’s Prehistoric Moves will be available on the PlayStation Store for $5.99!
  • December 21—LittleBigPlanet 2 demo will be available to everyone!
