Be still, our trembling hearts. It's rare the stars of our musical and gaming interests align in any meaningful manner -- the launch of the Billy Joel Rock Band 3 track pack, for example, rocked both areas of our life to their core. However, details have been slipping out over the Twitter feeds of Jonathan Coulton and They Might Be Giants (co-founder John Flansburgh is producing Coulton's upcoming album) of a project near and dear to our hearts: A new version of Portal's ending anthem, "Still Alive."

Here's what we know so far, based on the tweets:
  • It features a guest appearance by Sara Quin, of Tegan and Sara fame
  • There's a theremin solo, performed by theremin virtuoso Dorit Chrysler
  • We probably won't get to hear it until Jonathan Coulton's new album drops in 2013
  • John Flansburgh is producing it! John freaking Flansburgh.

Card-carrying members of GameStop's PowerUp Rewards program will find an additional incentive going forward, beginning with the launch of Portal 2 this month. Any PowerUp member who makes a trade-in or purchase at their local GameStop or online at GameStop.com in April will be entered into a drawing for a life-sized Atlas bot (the little guy in the foreground above), along with a framed copy of the game signed by the folks at Valve.

This kicks off a planned monthly incentive program, though exact details of what's on offer after April are a mystery at this time. For all of the fine print, head on over to the Epic Rewards site.

Update: This article erroneously suggested that this GameStop program had just launched. We apologize for the error.

It would appear that Valve's "potato sack" bundle is hiding something beneath the surface, much like the hidden ARG found in Portal after Valve updated it. A wiki page chronicles all of the discovered changes so far, which include some hidden glyphs and, if Razer equipment is detected, a message that reads "1...2...3...Drop That Beat (Like An Ugly Baby)." That odd phrase, of course, translates to "Secret Message."t

Common speculation is that this has something to do with Portal 2 (the Razer tie-in lends credence to that). Nothing has been confirmed yet, and folks are still finding stuff -- if you discover more interesting info, feel free to contact us!

[Thanks, Arslan]

Before Valve's new game comes out later this month, we thought we might interest you in a supplemental comic, Portal 2: Lab Rat. What, you'd prefer some crummy video game instead? Think about it. Would you rather (1) dirty your hands hands interacting to force the fun out of a disc or (2) just look at a screen and have the fun happen to you? When the first part debuts on IGN Comics tomorrow, the choice will be clear.

Besides, the comic has people like Powers co-author Michael Avon Oeming, and Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek working on it. Nobody at Valve could possibly compete with -- oh, really? All of them work there?

... Well, the comic's also free.

Valve Software sure do make videos good. They’ve done just that for Portal 2, several times now. And now there is more of it! I don’t know where they get their ideas from. A book, probably.

The “Turret video is below. (more…)

It doesn't take science -- let alone Aperture Science -- to know that people can't be trusted. Thankfully, Cave Johnson and company built some robots, and then some "better robots," in an effort to overcome the unreliability of human companionship.

The result, Atlas and P-body, is the robotic duo best suited to overcome the perilous panels and heaps of deathtraps laid out in the Portal 2 co-op campaign. The only problem? They'll have to be controlled by you and a human "friend."

Valve decided to make their own TV commercial for Portal 2. This was because, said marketing VP Doug Lombardi, “We’ve had many creative kick-off meetings with agencies over the years, and you’d be shocked by the treatments that have come back. Copycat treatments. Cliché treatments. Treatments that reveal the agency wasn’t listening in the initial meeting.” So instead Valve opted to make their own advertisment, in an eight week project.

It’s cute. And embedded below. The game is out in the 21st of April. (more…)

It was just this morning that we were reporting on Valve's plans to handle all of Portal 2's advertising in-house, now here we are, watching the first TV commercial for the game. It stars Atlas and P-body, the robotic co-op characters, who quickly learn how seriously GLaDOS wants to play.

Who knows how to communicate Portal 2's gameplay and tone better than Valve? Certainly not some ad agency, the company is asserting. Marketing VP Doug Lombardi told MCV that the company is going in-house for its Portal 2 ads, not just because it knows the material, but because it's easier to tinker that way.

"With the Portal 2 ad," Lombardi said, "we playtested it and were able to make changes during production. With an agency, those types of tests are too often left to a post-mortem - at which point, the value of those realisations is pretty close to worthless."

It's solid advice for anyone with the money lying about to create its own ad division. And good news for people who like to see actually funny things on TV.
