#dukenukem When they heard the news Duke Nukem Forever would be delayed until June, many folks thought what I did, frankly: Maybe Gearbox and 2K Games planned all along for a June release, but gave it a May date so the game, 14 years in development, would get one last round of "Duke is Delayed" buzz with attendant teeth-gnashing. Not so, says Gearbox's boss. More »

Even the best-laid plans can slip by a month or two. Duke Nukem Forever has been pushed back to a later June 14 release in North America and a June 10 release (a whopping four days earlier) elsewhere. It was supposed to hit worldwide shelves in early May, but something, obviously, got in the way of that.

What’s forcing Gearbox Software and publisher 2K’s hand in this postponement is unknown, but the reason must have been significant. Upon picking up Duke Nukem Forever, Gearbox was firm about not discussing possible release dates or launch windows for the shooter. Delays, much like engine swaps, are a legacy issue for DNF. Gearbox just wanted to make absolutely sure that whatever date was set, was the date the game would hit without a shadow of a doubt. Whoops!

At least the Texas-based developer has the right kind of attitude about all of this. In the following video, Randy Pitchford pokes some fun at himself and DNF about this delay.

Duke Nukem Forever was scheduled to hit in the mid-‘90s. A couple of engine swaps, a studio closure, and more than a decade later, Borderlands developer Gearbox stepped in to piece together the game and get it out of the door. It was revealed in a playable form to the public for the first time at PAX Prime.

Duke Nukem Forever has, perhaps unsurprisingly, been delayed, with the long-in-development shooter being pushed back a full month. After an incredibly protracted development period 14 years and counting now Duke Nukem Forever had been slated for a release on May 3 in the US with the rest of th...

One more delay for the road, huh? Yes, Duke Nukem Forever will not make its promised release date of May 3. Old habits die hard. So when, if ever, will it be released instead? I’ll let Randy ‘not Pitchfork’ Pitchford explain all… (more…)

The exciting North American variant of Official Xbox Magazine has revealed that Duke’s multiplayer will feature a “Capture The Babe” multiplayer mode, in which teams battle over women who are being carted off to be impregnated by the alien invaders. Ah, that sounds hi-liarious, doesn’t it, readers? But there’s to be controversy, thanks to the unbelievable admission that the babe might “freak out”, requiring you to “gently give her a reassuring slap.” OXM insist that this is “more goofy than offensive”.

So… yeah.

#gearboxsoftware Duke Nukem Forever wants to push your buttons. Take the game's "Capture the Babe" multiplayer mode, which ditches the traditional flag as object of desire for a woman, one who will "sometimes freak out" and need a gentle "reassuring slap." More »

Finally, you can stop holding out hope for that Soylent Green game that'll enable the repeated, unnecessary slapping of women -- Duke Nukem Forever has it covered. According to the latest OXM, Duke's next outing features four multiplayer modes, one of which (Capture the Babe) features a "babe" who will sporadically "freak out," which then necessitates "a reassuring slap," as the mag puts it.

The piece attempts to reassure us -- thankfully sans slap -- that the act is "more goofy than offensive," though we're not sure how virtually slapping a "manic" female could be spun in an inoffensive way. Perhaps if your hand looked like the one in that Foo Fighters video for "Everlong," and her cheeks were actually balloons, and she was manic from eating too much sugar? We just don't know.

Additionally, details on Dukematch and Team Dukematch were revealed -- they're both deathmatch modes, basically. "Hail to the King" rounds out the multiplayer with a King of the Hill-style mode, and all modes are limited to eight players (four vs four). Only one mode, however, allows for domestic violence.

A bit rude, but not very rude, almost as if the trailer was carefully edited to imply rudeness while being shown at a trade show where there are minors around. The end result is something a bit like the daydream of a tiny boy who knows that boobs are awesome, but the specifcs elude him. Take a look and see what I mean. (more…)

Hell froze over last September when developer Gearbox announced that it had bought Duke Nukem Forever and that the game (which had been in development for 12 years) would see the light of day in 2011. Fans couldn't believe it, but soon a preview build of Duke was making its way to conventions and letting everyone see that the king was back for some first-person action...

We don't normally do erotica reviews here at Joystiq, but we thought the ESRB's freshman effort at the genre, "The Duke Nukem Forever Ratings Summary," deserved our attention. Here are some of the hottest bits. During the course of the game, players enter a strip-club level and view several topless dancers and receive lap dances. A couple of missions within this level require players to recover sex toys and pictures of topless women. We've seen worse starts. Here the author isn't showing us the sex explictly, but rather setting the scene for sex. Very hot. A few sequences strongly imply sexual acts: two women appear to perform fellatio on the central character (e.g., raising their heads from his lap)-though there is no actual depiction of the sex act. This is fine, and we're defintely getting aroused, but where's the color? Where's the line that takes us inside what the characters are feeling? Duke moans and leans up against the wall of a bathroom stall (furnished with a hole)-it is implied that a sex act (not depicted) occurs. There we go. We can't wait to see where the author takes us next. Bathroom humor includes the ability to urinate in toilets or urinals and/or pick up feces from toilets and throw it aga-- OK, you know what? This clearly isn't for us. ESRB, you're getting an "F." Good luck on your next story.

Gearbox, we think you know not what you do. Duke Nukem Forever has been in development for, like, eleventy hundred years and now you're opening Pandora's Box; giving all of the developers, contractors, community members and anybody else who feels they have a worthwhile contribution claim a chance to be in your game's credits is noble, but perhaps too difficult an undertaking. We just hope you have more than one person on the job doing the research. Poor interns.

Still, a good deed never goes unnoticed and Gearbox's survey looking to call out those who helped this storied sequel along the way is commendable. If you're one such person who feels entitled to the back-pat, you can take the survey for yourself right here. Oh, and before you ask, we're pretty sure "I got Balls of Steel" won't get your name in the game.

If the Duke Nukem Forever "Balls of Steel" Edition is just too big for you to open up your wallet for without lube, GameStop and Walmart are offering pre-order bonuses with the regular sized editions. Walmart is giving out the prior decade fashion icon - the "trucker hat" - with pre-purchase. We have no idea when the hats were actually manufactured, but given the extended development cycle of the game, it could very well have been back when Ashton Kutcher helped popularize the fad on now-defunct TV show Punk'd.

GameStop wants to stuff its pants with pre-order cash using a simpler DNF bundle: "Duke's Big Package." The bonus is a group of downloadable items that offer in-game EGO boost (health), big head mode (boom shakalaka!) and t-shirt pack. Honestly, given our other-era experience with the game, the trucker hat is sure to deliver that unstuck-in-time feeling of living in the 90s.

Why aren't more games concerned with teaching their players a little something about etiquette? We know the guys from Mega64 were joking when they whipped up the trailer posted below for Duke Nukem's mannerly twin, Doug Huggem -- but, man, what a valuable lesson about cordiality!

If you thought Duke Nukem Forever was tacky before, wait until you see the collector's edition. Well, we suppose you've already seen the collector's edition -- that's it above.

The "Balls of Steel" Edition (yep), revealed to DNF "First Access Club" members, is overloaded with stuff, including a hardcover artbook, postcards, a logo sticker, a comic book, poker chips, dice, playing cards, a foldable papercraft, and -- oh yeah -- a bust of Duke Nukem. There's even a numbered certificate of authenticity, to prove to others that it's the genuine article. Notable omissions include steel stress balls and, in fact, anything spherical or metal.

The Balls of Steel Edition will be available in limited quantities for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC at launch (the week of May 3).

Update: 2K has provided additional details in its press release (in full after the break), revealing that the Balls of Steel Edition will be exclusive to Amazon and GameStop in North America -- for $100.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
