#viral A Dead Space 2 viral campaign launching this weekend took plenty of chutzpah, I'll give it that. Electronic Arts brought in 200 middle-aged mothers under the auspices of a focus group looking at a new game. They were, aptly, horrified. More »

Marketing agencies rarely want to promote their product as "an atrocity." However, a new ad campaign by EA does exactly that. "Your Mom Hates Dead Space 2" subjects focus group participants, comprised entirely of older females, to experience footage from Visceral's upcoming survival horror game.

We're T-minus 12 days and counting until the launch of Dead Space 2. In what is probably a last marketing hurrah before it ships, EA has released new footage from the sci-fi horror title featuring protagonist Isaac Clarke coming face-to-typeface with giant quotes from glowing reviews of the game.

Battlefield Heroes has always had a pretty fun, lighthearted theme powering its neverending conflict -- so, of course, a natural fit for that universe would be outfits from the decidedly heavyhearted Dead Space 2 universe. Check out the trailer below to watch these distinct worlds collide.

We've heard Isaac Clarke's voice, and it's deeper than you'd expect. It's also got an edge of fear that simply didn't manifest as he stomped through the Ishimura, saving the day with nary a whisper or whimper. If you're worried that a talkative Isaac Clarke might ruin Dead Space 2, though, you shouldn't be. "In terms of how much he talks, last game, zero," said executive producer Steve Papoutsis. "This game, he's somewhere between a two and a half and a three. He's not really wordy, he's not shooting off a bunch of one-liners, he's just speaking when it makes sense for the story."

Here's a nice bonus for fans of the original Dead Space. If you have any save file -- completed or not -- from the first title, you'll unlock the original plasma cutter right off the bat for use in the upcoming sequel. Hardcore players should be more than familiar with the gun, thanks to an Achievement that forces players to complete an entire playthrough using only that gun.

But don't expect the plasma cutter to give you much of an advantage at the beginning of the Dead Space 2 campaign. Although you'll get access to the gun, Visceral Games' Louis Gascoigne told us that the upgrades you purchased for the weapon won't carry over into the sequel. Isaac Clarke just can't get a break, can he?

Previously on Dead Space: Maintenance man Isaac Clarke took a trip to the USG Ishimura to cacth up with the old lady and handle a little alien outbreak. Words were said, drama ensued, and now he's still got space zombies to strategically dismember. Need a more dramatic interpretation? Fine ...

#pressplay Aside from the inclusion of multiplayer, probably the biggest addition to Dead Space 2 is "The Sprawl", the confined, segmented sections of the first game's spaceship replaced with the cavernous interior of a space station. More »

EA has announced a release date for the upcoming Dead Space Aftermath animated movie. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 24 in Europe, and January 25 in the US. MSRP is $34.99, but some outlets (including Amazon at the moment) are selling it for even cheaper than that already. The film will also come bundled in a double pack with 2008's animated tie-in, Dead Space Downfall.

The film will supposedly serve as a prequel to Dead Space 2, about a group sent by the Government to the Aegis VII disaster from the first animated film, in order to "test" the "effects" of Marker shards. Sounds like a recipe for "trouble" (and some gory scares). Between this release next month and the demo later on this month, the Dead Space franchise is about to get a whole lot livelier.

You'd think life on a space station would be pretty neat. Pristine walkways, star-filled views and, of course, all the replicated food you can eat. Unfortunately, life on the Sprawl is about to get brutish, terrifying, and kind of gross. See what we mean in the latest trailer for Dead Space 2.

EA Games president Frank Gibeau's philosophy about the future of the games industry will probably come as a disappointment to everyone waiting on bated breath for Mirror's Edge 2: Even Edgier. Gibeau recently explained to Develop that EA is "very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay - be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services - as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you're out." He added, "I think that model is finished."

This philosophy is reflected in the multiplayer-equipped Dead Space 2, which still looks great, but ... it's still kind of a bummer, isn't it? Like, that EA-published, big-budget adventure game about tax auditors we've always dreamed about? It feels like we missed our window on that one.

EA will launch a single-player Dead Space 2 demo on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network on Tuesday, December 21 (and Dec. 22 on the European PSN). The interactive snippet will reintroduce players to space engineer Isaac Clarke as he performs routine conduit maintenance, designs more efficient CO2 scrubbers and grudgingly does videophone tech support with his mom, who just installed Windows 14.

As Dead Space executive producer Steve Papoutsis notes, "Releasing the demo five weeks before launch will not only reconnect players with our hero Isaac Clarke, but will also give them the opportunity to experience firsthand various jaw-dropping scenarios. It's gonna be awesome."
