Leo and I decided to try out this free-to-play game called Tactical Intervention as a fallback when another game wasn't working. We didn't have very high hopes for it, but we gave it a try. Now it might be my new favorite multiplayer game.Read more...

If you've been clamoring for an opportunity to play Tactical Intervention, now's your chance. The shooter, designed by Counter-Strike co-developer Minh "Gooseman" Le, has just entered open beta testing, which should be great news for anyone who missed their chance at scoring one of the 6,000 closed beta keys we gave away in March.

Accessing the open beta is as simple as finding the game client within the Steam store and downloading the gratis 4.1GB file. Tactical Intervention makes its official debut on September 12 as a free-to-play game, so pulling down the game's open beta incarnation won't save you any cash, but should save you the hassle of having to pull down the client later.

Alongside the open beta announcement, publisher 1337 Games has also revealed two new maps slated to appear in the final version of Tactical Intervention, dubbed "Monaco" and "Airport." These scenarios will not be present in the open beta as the development team is still adding the final touches to the locations, but 1337 Games promises that they will deliver "new gameplay and surprises."

This is it, this is the one. The game trailer the aliens will find when studying our radio waves fourteen million light years away. The one hard drive to survive the Guardian-bot uprising will contain it. When the rats rule this world they’ll scuttle around our carcasses as decaying monitors play it on endless repeat. It’s not the last game trailer we want, but it’s the last game trailer we deserve. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages Rock, Paper, Shotgun proudly brings to you the trailer champion of the WHUUUURRRRLLLD: Tactical Intervention.

Minh Le, co-creator of the original Counter-Strike mod in Half-Life, is gearing up to launch his new game Tactical Intervention next month. Tactical Intervention, a multiplayer shooter that similarly pits teams of terrorists against counter-terrorists, will be available worldwide through Steam.

Tactical Intervention was announced in 2010 and initially pegged for launch last year, though Le and developer Fix Korea obviously had to push the game back. In an interview with Joystiq earlier this year, Le recalled his tenure at Valve, the initial insecurity he had in the face of so many "geniuses" that eventually led to his departure and ultimately the creation of Tactical Intervention.

"I never really expected it to last this long," Minh Le tells me over video chat. "It" is Counter-Strike, a mod Le helped create alongside Jess Cliffe in the late 1990's. Since the two-man team and its creation was acquired by Valve in 2000, Counter-Strike has continued to expand, with new, standalone versions landing on almost every major video game platform.

Le, known in the mod community as 'Gooseman,' is still surprised by its popularity.

"I started back in 1999, and back then it was just this mod," Le tells me. "It really, really shocks me. Part of the reason I think it has evolved, even to this day and maintained its strength is because of community involvement."

Le hasn't kept track of updates to Counter-Strike - or its subsequent sequels - since his final days at Valve, as he's now busy working on a new project inspired by lessons he learned and goals he wanted to accomplish with the original mod. A new, free-to-play shooter dubbed Tactical Intervention. Counter-Strike, though made popular by its classic bomb mode and no-respawn deathmatch style, was meant to be remembered for other modes that fans never quite gravitated to, like VIP and Hostage missions. With enhancements to make those modes better than he was able to achieve in Counter-Strike, Tactical Intervention is closer to being unleashed.

There were many things Minh Le wished he could have done with Counter-Strike. After helping create one of the most popular online shooters ever, he left Valve Software, embarking on a seven-year journey to create Tactical Intervention. After overcoming technical hurdles, as well as adapting the game to take advantage of a growing free-to-play market, Le is finally showing his baby and hoping players will see it as an evolution of his prior work...

Counter-Strike co-creator Minh Le's Tactical Intervention is a free-to-play online multiplayer shooter. Since its 2010 announcement, there have been a few closed betas -- another is set to launch next month -- and, according to Neowin, a launch is on the horizon. It'll be in Spring 2012, courtesy of publisher Online Gaming Planet, to be exact.

Tactical Intervention isn't about strategically persuading drug addicts they need to go into rehab; it's a lot like Counter-Strike. Teams of terrorists and counter-terrorists shoot each other a bunch. Simple.

The official site has gone live, so check it out if you want to sign up for next month's closed beta.

Scrolling through this vast selection of Tactical Intervention images – with dogs, explosions, and terrified comedy hostages – was giving me the weirds: sending my brain back ten years, when my job on PC Gamer was to review Counter-Strike’s numerous imitators between bouts of writing about joysticks and graphics cards. How time flies. How nothing changes. It’s quite a peculiar un-nostalgia.

There are so many images here. I don’t know why I posted them all. I’m sorry.(more…)

Counter-Strike co-creator Mihn Le have left Valve a few year ago to work on his own interpretation of the CS formula, but he took something with him: he runs on Valve Time, that temporal twisting that people experience in the presence of all those Steam servers. For years and years I’ve been hearing about his free-to-play Terrorist vs Swat team game Tactical Intervention, and it finally looks like it’s breaking loose in 2012. The American launch of the game will be in Spring 2012, with closed beta testing in March. There’s even a new teaser trailer, showing rappelling!
