Hi PlayStation fans, we have some exciting news to share with you today! The popular creature hunting franchise, Invizimals, is returning to PlayStation this year in the Americas. The franchise began as a series of innovative PSP titles in which players hunted down and battled elusive Invizimals using the PSP camera. Today, we’re happy to confirm that Invizimals: The Alliance and Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom will be coming to PS Vita and PS3 (respectively) later this year.

Invizimals: The Alliance is the next step in the evolution from the PSP games to the PS Vita. Players will hunt, capture, and battle creatures in order to save the Invizimals from the evil Xtractor Industries robots which have invaded their world. Invizimals: The Alliance brings next-gen AR gaming to your fingertips with new Markerless AR technology and a variety of capture mini-games using the PS Vita controls. You’ll have hours of fun trying to track them all down and battling your friends in the all-new 4-player battle system.

Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom is the first foray onto PS3 for the Invizimals in an all new 3D action-adventure game. Take control of Hiro as he’s sent to the Invizimals’ world to save the Lost Kingdom. Venture into the Invizimals’ world and use your Z-com to transform into 16 of your favorite Invizimals, each with their own unique powers and abilities. You can also cooperatively with a story that syncs with the Vita game, Invizimals: The Alliance, and fight in co-op battle arenas with up to four cross-play opponents on PS3 or PS Vita.

The Invizimals franchise has long been a smash-hit in Europe and its success overseas has spawned a variety of new ways for kids to join the hunt for the Invizimals. Panini has created a trading card game with a corresponding Invizimals Hidden Challenges App for iOS/Android/PSP/PS Vita. IMC Toys is launching a full line of toys ranging from mini-figures, to large action-figures, to giant playsets and a new animated TV series has been released in Europe following Hiro’s battle against the Xtractor Robots in the world of the Invizimals. The series will utilize TVAR technology to allow kids to capture Invizimals through their TV by using their PS Vita and smartphones. Those are just a few ways that Invizimals have taken over Europe, now it’s time for them to make the journey overseas to North America!

Stay tuned later this year for more details on the games and more!

Augmented reality-based collection-RPG Invizimals never quite picked up the steam in North America that it managed to conjure up in Europe -- probably due to the fact the game came to our shores a full year after it hit PAL territories. Still, that doesn't mean we'll have to go without further iterations of the undetectable monster franchise: PlayStation Blog has announced that Invizimals: Shadow Zone, which dropped in Europe last November, will come stateside this fall.

The game throws over 100 more secret beasts into the mix, and adds a co-op component to the original title's monster-capturing mechanic. So, potentially, you could have two people working in tandem to snatch collectible apparitions from the flat surfaces of their homes. We can't tell if that's going to make them look less insane, or exponentially more insane.

Kids at Mansel Primary school used PSPs to escape from the real world and go on fantasy adventures while at school -- as part of an assignment.

The "Imaginary Worlds" project used the system with AR software to allow kids to design fantasy landscapes (like the "Tower of Doom") at school by finding art online and matching it with scannable codes that were hidden around the school. The kids then took camera-equipped systems around the school and embarked on virtual "quests" in these self-made locales, finding items to defeat a monster, and writing about the experience afterward.

According to a subsequent evaluation, the experimental program was met with enthusiasm, and kids behaved well and cooperated while taking part. The evaluation notes that the kids played Invizimals first as an introduction to the AR tech, which proved to be a "useful hook-in to the project."

We think the project is onto something -- not just as a teaching tool, but as a game. We totally want to go have a quest and then chronicle the hardships of said quest.

#review People compare Invizmals to Pokémon. People may also compare it to the sadly-still-fictional Star Wars chess, last played by Chewbacca and R2D2. Try one more comparison: This game is like a flying contraption made prior to the Wright Brothers'. More »

Hi everyone! This is my first official PlayStation.Blog entry, and I want to let you know Invizimals for the PSP system is available in stores beginning today AND it comes bundled with our new camera! This is the first camera-based PSP game for North America.

Imagine being able to search for invisible animals but you can only do it with your PSP system. Just point the camera to locate virtual creatures anywhere– behind sofas, into corners, and under bushes and they will pop up on your PSP system screen. With a magical trap (rectangular shaped card also included with the game), you interact with the monsters by grabbing, tickling and luring them into your collection. With over 120 creatures to capture, indulge in a single player game of magical discovery or enjoy multiplayer action online. You can battle by using special moves such as blowing onto the camera to create a hurricane; shaking the PSP system to start an earthquake, or casting a shadow over the battlefield to deploy a lightning strike. You can also take pictures of your monster collection and trade online with friends.

This is a fun one for PSP fans! We’d like to thank Novarama and Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Liverpool Studio for all of their hard work in coming up with Invizimals and allowing fans to become virtual monster hunters! We’re really excited to bring Invizmals and the new PSP camera to you guys!

Invizimals including the camera for the PSP retails for $39.99. Also, there is an Invizimals PSP Entertainment Pack available today too at retailers nationwide for $199.99 containing a special “Vibrant Blue” PSP-3000 system, Invizimals game on UMD, a camera for the PSP system, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs movie on UMD, and a 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo™ storage media. One thing to note: Invizimals is not compatible with PSPgo.

If you haven't picked up a PSP system yet, the upcoming Invizimals Entertainment Pack may be the best bundle offered by Sony so far. Why? Unlike every other bundle , this includes an extra piece of hardware: the ever-elusive PSP camera. The "Vibrant Blue" color ain't too shabby, either. According to retail listings on Gamestop and Amazon, the $199.99 package includes:
  • PSP-3000 system (Vibrant Blue)
  • Invizimals UMD Game
  • Camera
  • 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo
  • Downloadable Movie PSN Voucher -- "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs"
  • AC Power Cord
  • AC Adaptor
  • Battery Pack
Both retailers have the bundle listed for October 12th release. If you own a PSP Go, you may want to consider picking up this bundle -- as of now, there's no confirmation if Invizimals will even work on the Go system.

The upcoming camera-enabled launches of EyePet and Invizimals in North America may not be available to PSP Go owners at all. PlayStation.Blog's Sid Shuman accurately admits that the upcoming PSP camera was "designed for pre-Go models only," and the "current camera will only fit onto the larger PSP model."

Shuman suggests there are "no workarounds," suggesting he has forgotten about the rarely-seen PSP Go "converter cable," introduced at Tokyo Game Show last year. Whether or not the attachment will ever find a Stateside release is still up in the air. "We don't have any information yet on a peripheral attachment for the Go," a Sony rep told us, neither confirming nor denying the possibility. Of course, should SCEA choose not to ship the cables, there's another solution: importing from Japan.
