Last summer, with our wallets combined, we nearly came together to form Defense Grid 2. But not quite. The cruel genie-in-a-bottle that is Kickstarter gave us most of what we wanted, but not all of it. So yes, surprise expansion Defense Grid: Containment got funded, but the promise of Defense Grid 2 melted like ash in our mouths when Hidden Path’s crowdfunding drive fell well short of $1,000,000. Jim and Alec have been weeping incessantly ever since. Now, however, I’m excited to report that they’ve stopped – and also that we’re getting a full Defense Grid sequel after all I guess! Some glorious tower-defending angel investor swept in from on high, and the day is saved.

Cook me up another helping of Defense Grid and serve it with plenty of relish, I almost said to the internet just days ago. OK, it might have responded, but it’ll cost you. How much? That’s where things become a little more complicated. Hidden Path’s Kickstarter has four major targets to reach: the first ($250,000) will lead to an eight level expansion with a new story; the second ($500,000) will allow development of a new engine with all original Defense Grid content upgraded to it, plus a new co-op mode; tier three brings a level editor, more multiplayer content, and Mac and Linux releases; and the final tier would bring a full sequel. The opening of the project video (below) is my favourite Kickstarter yet and there are more details on the page.

Hidden Path, the Defense Grid devs who are now so closely associated with Valve that they are working on CS:GO, have announced that Defense Grid will receive a Portal-themed called “You Monster.” The expansion, which will arrive on the 7th of December, guest-stars GLaDOS as a narrator, and sees players take on Portal-themed levels. You Monster will apparently add eight new maps for the “all new” story and thirty five challenge missions, making about fifteen hours more defending of grids. No word on how much it’s going to cost, however.

In addition to officially revealing next week's XBLA offerings, Major Nelson has also laid out Xbox Live Marketplace schedule for the rest of June, including the Deal of the Week, Games on Demand and Avatar Marketplace. The Deal of the Week -- or Deals of the Week, rather -- takes the spotlight, with several decent titles on sale. Darwinia+ will be marked down to 800 points ($10), while Defense Grid, PB Winterbottom, Rocket Riot and Poker Smash will all be marked down to 400 points ($5). Also, the OneBigGame charity project, Chime, will be reduced to a puny 240 points ($3).

Meanwhile, both Tomb Raider Underworld and Command & Conquer 3 will hit Games on Demand on June 29, and some Crackdown 2 Avatar items will be released on July 1.

"Hey Ricky, what are you downloading?"

"Oh, what's up, Mitch? Check it out, I found a place on the 360 Dashboard where you can get the Resurgence Pack for $4!"

"Wow, that's a pretty great deal!"

"Yeah, the only catch is they're only releasing one pair of maps per week for $0.99 a piece."

"...But that equals eight maps. I thought they were only adding five maps to Modern Warfare 2."

"Well, the other only catch is that they don't work with Modern Warfare 2, because they're actually maps for Defense Grid that just happen to -- purely by coincidence, I'm sure -- be called the Resurgence packs."

"... I don't even know you any more."

Major Nelson has dropped a new Xbox Live Marketplace schedule for the remainder of March and beginning of April and, while we knew about most of the major releases already, there's still some surprises to be found. First, the next two weeks will see some nice Deal of the Week promotions, with Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram falling to 800 ($10) and Geometry Wars 2 dropping to a paltry 400 ($5).

Beyond that, Xbox Live Silver members will also be able to enjoy free Xbox Live Gold -- including online multiplayer, Netflix, last.fm, Facebook and Twitter -- from noon ET on April 1 through noon ET on April 5. And, as if all that wasn't enough, Major announced that ten Xbox Live Arcade games will go on sale from April 1 through April 7. The full list of games hasn't been announced, though it will include Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, South Park and Defense Grid. Check out the full Xbox Live schedule after the break.
