#borderlands When making a mobile spin-off of a major console/PC game, one neat thing to include would be some equivalent of the most popular features of the franchise proper. There were no gun loot drops in Borderlands Legends for the iPhone and iPad. Now there are. More »

#borderlands This weekend, we reported that some players took umbrage with Tiny Tina, a character from Borderlands 2 and how she used "black lingo." Gearbox was receptive to these players, listening to their concerns and even offering to change the character in future updates should they be convinced that Tina's dialogue was racist. More »

Mikey Neumann is the Chief Creative "Champion" of Gearbox Software which is a fancy-talk way of saying he writes games, makes trailers, and forces dubstep onto the population at large. He has been at the company since 2001 and has worked on many titles including writing all of the Brothers in Arms series, the first Borderlands, and Aliens: Colonial Marines. He also writes comics books and novels which include a Borderlands comic and the first issue just hit shelves. If you want to check out his novels, go over to http://bozpublishing.com/ and start reading online or purchase anything to go for under a buck.

Onto my TOP 10! (Which are in this particular order.)

10. Diablo III

I don't know how this couldn't made it onto my list. We all love Diablo and we got a polished update worthy of the name. I played this for weeks and couldn't resist making a new character and a new build and jumping back into the fray.

9. Call of Duty: Black Ops II

I am terrible at multiplayer in Call of Duty; simply awful. There's nothing more demoralizing than getting epitaphs hurled at you in whatever homophobic or racially driven flavor preteens are into this week. But Treyarch's games have bots! I can fight bots and actually get kill streaks! That shit is fun.

8. You Have to Win the Game

An indie throwback to the real old-school: CGA graphics, or at least, complex 3D work disguised to look like CGA graphics! Kyle Pittman made this brutal, nostalgic beast and if you haven't checked it out, you should! http://www.piratehearts.com/blog/games/you-have-to-win-the-game/

7. Worms Revolution

I love Worms. I've loved Worms since the first game. I'd stay up with my best friend and play that game all night. In this version, they finally made the switch to a 3D engine, while keeping the gameplay old school. This game got pretty overlooked, but you should check it out. It's legit.

6. Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Criterion is back, baby! It might be under a different name, and we won't get back to the sheer audacious joy of ramming 18-wheelers full of logs into oncoming traffic to score points like in Burnout 2, but I'll take what I can get.

5. Journey

What a great piece of interactive art. If you aren't stunned by the experience you have old spinach where your heart should be, like Ryan Davis.

4. Halo 4

Very little has not been said about this behemoth and 343's taking of the torch. So, uh, those little dudes that run around all goofy and are still great fun to bash in the head--I bet that they can't even sit in a chair, they're shaped like turnips. Little hobbling grenade turnips.

3. Sid Meier's Civilization V: Gods and Kings

Yes! Any excuse to get Civ V back on the list! I can never shut up about this game because it's the best, and tiny insult hurling children-people just don't have the stomach for uber-defensive turtle-Gandhi culture victory! The expansion added an amazing amount of depth to the experience so I'll be playing this for many more years to come.

2. The Walking Dead

How can you make a list and not mention this gut-wrenching adventure game that proved how amazing episodic gaming could be? Telltale really hit this one out of the park and assembled a great group of writers to pull it off.

1. XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Yeah, I put Firaxis on here twice, right at the top. I want their man-babies. It's the depth of this game that kept me coming back. What a perfect update to the PC classics. Name all your characters after you friends and feel like a terrible person when you get them killed with a bone-headed error in judgment.

(I didn't put Borderlands 2 on here because I think that would have been weird. But I love it and play it all the time--you should too!)

Explore the world of Borderlands from a different perspective today, with the iOS launch of the action RPG Borderlands Legends. The mobile spinoff is available on iPhone and iPod touch for $4.99 and iPad for $6.99.

The trailer above manages to fit in a decent amount of gameplay along with its bombastic title cards and slide guitar. We're impressed! And we're also, as a result, able to tell you to watch the above trailer to get a better idea of gameplay.

Borderlands Legends, the iOS spin-off to Gearbox’s popular shooter, is now on the iTunes store for you to buy, if you’re an Apple person. Annoyingly, it’s not universal, so you’ll have to decide whether you want the $5 iPhone version or the $7 iPad version. Check the links for compatibility, but both work with recent iOS devices. -Stephen Totilo

Borderlands Legends, the top-down RPG in which you control the first game's four Vault Hunters, may expand to other platforms after it arrives next week. It's coming to the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch in a pair of separately priced apps first.

"We're working on other mobile platforms," 2K Games' PR manager Scott Pytlik told Joystiq. 2K China, the developer behind Borderlands Legends and other 2K mobile titles, is currently working on many projects, so Pytlik couldn't give us any kind of timeframe or specific platforms for this endeavor. The list of viable mobile platforms isn't that large, however, so we can probably rule out WebOS.

Borderlands Legends is an iPad and iPhone game releasing later this month. Gearbox Forums user Ownzilla spotted the above advert for the iOS game in the Borderlands 2 digital strategy guide.

Despite the details and screenshots in the advert, it's unclear exactly how Legends plays. What it features for certain are the four playable characters from the first Borderlands, character-specific abilities and powers unlocked by levelling up, plenty of weapons, a "strategic cover system," and a 'Fight for your life' mode which likely ties in to its namesake in Borderlands 2. And since there's mention of "in-game cash", surprise surprise, in-app purchases are likely to feature too.

The advert includes no release details beyond Borderlands Legends arriving in October. We've reached out to Gearbox for more info.Borderlands Legends will 'blow your mind' on iPhone & iPad this month

Here’s today’s scandal, then. The Mechromancer, a post-release DLC character for Borderlands 2 has been revealed, and one of her skill trees is aimed at making the game more accessible to people who don’t play shooters. Officially, this set of abilities is called ‘Best Friends Forever’, and includes skills such as missed shots having a chance to auto-ricochet into their intended targets – i.e. allowing some victory from imprecise aiming. That’s fine. That’s even quite a good idea for anyone who wants to play the game with someone who isn’t well-versed in such things. I quite want to play it with my Dad, in fact.

The trouble is that a dev at Gearbox unofficially dubbed it ‘the girlfriend mode’ when talking to Eurogamer, which is clearly all kinds of offensive and quickly caused online outrage – definitely justified were the skills truly called ‘girlfriend mode’ but rather less cut and dried if it turns out to be just one guy’s personal (and foolish) nickname for the real title of Best Friends Forever. Gearbox are claiming the drama stems from misinterpretation and sensationalism.(more…)

We can't tell if this is a sign of the times or an indicator of Randy Pitchford's own psyche as it enters the primary stages of acute paranoia. Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, is surprised that Borderlands hasn't been cloned yet, even though "the formula's right there."

"I'm actually astonished that we're about to launch a sequel and no one's stole it from us," Pitchford tells Gamasutra. "The formula's right there. No one's stolen it yet. That's weird. We're in an industry where people do nothing but steal from each other."

The formula, for those who haven't picked it up yet, is [(first-person + shooter y) x (console) / (PC)], where y = a rotating variation of loot, guns and XP. Even though that super-secret formula is now public, Pitchford isn't inviting people to steal it from Gearbox.

"Not that I want anyone to steal it, or I'm challenging people to steal it," he says. "When talking about Borderlands 1, it was really confusing, because on one hand we gotta scream from the highest mountain to get attention because it's a new IP. On the other hand, it's like, 'Shit, we don't want to tell people our secret because then they're all gonna copy it because it's so good.'"

Ah, we see the root of Pitchford's perspective now. If Gearbox worried people would copy Borderlands because "it's so good," and no one has copied it, Pitchford might take that as an insult. Don't worry, Gearbox - the right people know that Borderlands is a great game, and it's entirely possible that no one at Zynga has played it yet.
