World of Warcraft is getting a bit long in the tooth, and Blizzard has been working on Titan for years.

Titan is the codename for Blizzard Entertainment’s next MMO, a project the studio’s alluded previously, while also keeping the whole thing a big ol’ secret. We don’t know much about it.

Whatever Titan actually is, the game may end up featuring in-game advertising and product placement, as Blizzard has put out a job listing seeking someone to work on that very idea.

Specifically, the job is for a “franchise development producer” on a “next-gen MMO.”

“Work with major consumer brands to facilitate product placement and licensing within the world of Blizzard Entertainment's next-gen MMO that enhances the gameplay experience,” reads the listing.

Contextualized in-game ads would support some previous rumors Titan would be a far cry from the fantasy setting of Blizzard’s other games, especially its still-popular World of Warcraft. Titan taking place in a quasi-real world setting has been brought up before, and it’s gained new evidence today.

Blizzard Entertainment has been steadily updating the Battle.net online multiplayer service recently, presumably in anticipation of Diablo 3's release next year. Last week, the company introduced what it's calling the Battle.net Balance, a currency total stored on its servers that players can use to pay for Blizzard items -- from a World of Warcraft subscription to in-game items and plushies in the company store. This is where funds not translated directly into cash will go from the real money auction house in Diablo 3, whenever it arrives.

Today, Blizzard introduced the BattleTag system, which is a specific public username that will identify players publicly on Battle.net services (similar to Xbox Live's Gamertag name). This is likely the compromise Blizzard came up with over its controversial Real ID service, which was originally meant to utilize real player names.

BattleTags are not unique, but players will have a number in their public profiles that will let you identify just which "touchFuzzygetDizzy" you're talking to. BattleTags will appear first in the Diablo 3 beta, and get used in all of Blizzard's games and services sometime after that.

The World of Warcraft site has been updated with full details of what you can expect from patch 4.3, Hour of Twilight. The headline features are a number of new dungeons and a new raid that revolve around battling the dragon, Deathwing. First, players must travel back in time 10,000 years "in a brazen attempt to retrieve the Dragon Soul" and then escort it to the Wyrmrest Temple, so that the assault on Deathwing can commence...

The forthcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft will be bringing along a revamped talent tree as well as fluffykins up there. Not happy with how players built identically specced characters at their most statistically efficient, Blizzard are hoping their new system will make it more tempting for players to forge their own path through the levels.

Three specilisations will be available for every class with specific spells assigned to each one. Meanwhile, talents are available for every spec in that class, and will be awarded every 15 levels. These talents will be interchangeable as you play, further tempting players to rebuild and experiment with the numbers. Sounds a lot like Diablo 3, come to think of it.

Have a go at rolling your new build with the official talent calculator, and keep in mind that the numbers aren’t final.

Actually, I’m not quite sure what age kids really start riding bicycles, at least without stabilisers and/or a worried parent holding onto the back of the saddle. I think I was at least around seven when I first managed a brief, unassisted pedal down a country lane (and, more excitingly, was rewarded with a second-hand Superion for my efforts. I still have that somewhere) so I’m going to go ahead and say that Blizzard’s MMO should be capable of such a feat.

Yes, World of Warcraft, the main man of the MMO industry, has been around for seven years this week, which is an alarming prospect. How did it get so old? (By which I mean ‘how did I get so old?) And it’s remarkable it’s only seen three expansions in that time, given what a cash-cow it’s been for Blizzard, Vivendi and Activision. There are gentle celebrations in honour of this birthday, primarily in the form of a ‘feat of strength’ item dropped into the inventories of any players who sign in between now-ish and December 3.(more…)
