Hi! We’ve wanted to write this piece for a long time. It’s been great to announce Teslagrad for PS3 and PS Vita coming this year, and it’s also wonderful to have this opportunity to present our game in detail on PlayStation.Blog.
Let’s suppose that the question here is simply “Hey, what’s Teslagrad about?” We’ve had to answer that question many, many times, and we have our response down to a science:
Teslagrad is a puzzle platformer with action elements, where magnetism and other electromagnetic powers are the key to go throughout the game, and thereby discover the secrets kept in the long abandoned Tesla Tower.
That’s quite the statement. How did you like it? It’s like a mantra. We just can’t recall how many times we’ve said and/or written that. And that’s why we’re looking forward to this post. Now we can go into more detail.
So, Teslagrad is…
Magnetism: Magnets, we know how they work! Electromagnetic forces are the lifeblood of the game, either acting as a magnetic elevator or as part of teslamancer weaponry (just to pick a couple of the many examples). Magnetic interaction allows you to not only play around as much as you want, but it’s also the main ingredient of almost every puzzle in the game. Attractive.
Puzzles: Teslagrad contains a lot of different puzzles, with magnetism as leitmotif. Early in the game you’ll get a gauntlet that allows you to change the polarity of some elements of the environment.
Players will ascertain that opposite poles attract, whereas the same poles repel — a really simple premise, right? But things get tricky with an increasing number of magnets and awesome new items. Prepare for brainy puzzles!
Platforming: Puzzle solving is a key part of Teslagrad’s core design, but we’ve pursued an electrifying platformer experience, too. Teslagrad follows a Metroidvania-like, non linear exploration structure, drawing strong inspiration from classic platformers.
Of course, new items and abilities are important in unlocking new areas. That said, Teslamancer dexterity counts!
Action: Well, that giant steampunk-ish orb falling apart in pieces while trying to demagnetize you is self explanatory, isn’t it? A boss is one element often seen in classic video games. There’s many of theses bosses, and they’ll make you put your knowledge into action.
Secrets: You’re the last of the teslamancers, and there’s more than a hidden truth deep inside of Tesla Tower. The many layers of Teslagrad’s story are told through voiceless scenes, for a purely visual narrative experience.
There’s not a single word in the game (no text, nor dialogue). But there’s an epic story waiting to be discovered in everything that you see, and of course in what you don’t see.
Art: Some of the first elements of Teslagrad that jump out at players first are the hand-drawn, lovingly animated characters with an aesthetic reminiscent of classic cartoons.
Disney-like, many say, although Ole (one of our artists) prefers to highlight the influence of Winsor McKay or Franco-Belgian cartoons like Tintin and Spirou. As if this artistic design wasn’t enough, Teslagrad also features a haunting soundtrack by Jørn Lavoll and Linn Kathrin Taklo.
And of course, Teslagrad is much more than that! We’ve put our heart and soul into every corner of Tesla Tower, and we’re really looking forward to all of you exploring Teslagrad for the very first time, either on PS3 or PS Vita.
Hope to tell you more about Teslagrad soon! Thanks for reading, and of course we’ll be delighted to hear from you. Anything else you’d like to know, just drop us a line in the comments or on Twitter.
For all of us here at Tribute Games, today is our second-most-awaited day of 2014: telling everyone about our FIRST most-awaited day of this year… the PS4 launch of Mercenary Kings, debuting April 1st on Playstation Store!
In this action-packed adventure, you must choose between Empress and King, two members of the elite squad known as the Mercenary Kings! Dropped on Mandragora Island, you’re tasked with one mission: rescue the brilliant Dr. James Neil from the forces of C.L.A.W. (Cyber Loyalist Active Weapons) and prevent them from using the Mandrake Formula to conquer the globe.
You can be a lone wolf if you dare, or assemble your own team of mercenaries to take down C.L.A.W! Your crew can have up to four players, whether it’s on your couch or online.
Thanks to your support crew back at Camp Crown, the side-scrolling action of Mercenary Kings gets deep. The materials gathered during your missions can be forged into powerful cannons or sharp blades. With 300+ gun parts and more than 100 knives, the possibilities are huge! Will you craft a machine gun with mega-ammo, or a quick-reload pistol? What about forging a blade with deadly range?
You don’t have to decide right now, but make up your mind by April 1st because you won’t have any time to waste when you take on the legions of C.L.A.W.!
Today’s the day! TowerFall Ascension is finally launching on PS4. TowerFall is an archery platformer featuring intense local multiplayer battles and a dynamic solo — or co-op — Quest mode. Grab your friends and pack onto your couch for a night of close calls, surprise victories, and hilarious missteps.
The reviews began rolling in a few days ago, and I’m absolutely floored by the response. I’m not usually one to put a lot of stock in those dubious numbers emblazoned in bold at the bottom of articles, but I can’t deny it feels good to see the 9.5′s.
Making TowerFall has been the most rewarding experience of my life. When I put love into the
game, I see it returned to me tenfold by the TowerFall community, and it only appears to be growing.
I also had the privilege of working with some incredibly talented, capable, and pleasant people. I want to thank the entire team by name. Kevin Regamey and Jeff Tangsoc (sound design), Pedro Medeiros (pixel art), Amora Bettany (character design and concept art), Alec Holowka (music), and Kert Gartner (trailers).
I also want to thank Sickhead Games, Nick Suttner, John Sanders, and all of Sony’s Third Party Production and PR teams for their support and genuine enthusiasm for the game. Everyone involved from the core team to Sony and Sickhead loves this game and it shows.
Thank you for playing!
Matt

Hey everyone! This weekend, Telltale Games, Gearbox, and 2K Games unveiled Tales from the Borderlands at SXSW with the very first details from the upcoming series… and we have the full video of the panel right here to share with you!
We can finally reveal that you will play as TWO protagonists: Rhys, a Hyperion company man with a robotic arm and a knack for hacking; and Fiona, a fast-talking con artist. The story will be told from both of their perspectives, and here’s the twist: both of these characters are lying jerks, so you’re never playing what REALLY happened. It’s more like playing each of their interpretations of events, and the truth lies somewhere in between…
Set on Pandora after the events of Borderlands 2 and all its DLC, Tales from the Borderlands will explore characters who aren’t your typical heroes or badasses. Rhys and Fiona aren’t vault hunters, but they definitely have their own agendas, doing whatever swindling, cheating, or backstabbing they need to in order to survive. Rest assured it’s not all talk, either — there’ll be plenty of the crazy, over-the-top action you’ve come to expect from Borderlands as well, translated into the Telltale style.
Definitely watch the video of the Two Sides to Every Story panel for all the finer details on what’s to come in Tales from the Borderlands (plus things you never knew about the physiology of skags), and look out for the season premiere later this year!
In our last post, Dick talked about some of the history behind Fun Fair, dating back to 2011 when we showed Hohokum for the first time. Now we have a new trailer for Fun Fair, accompanied by a track from Ben Benjamin… Behold the mischief of the Balloon Seller!
Next up, we have Scott Hansen (Tycho) and Ben Benjamin here to talk about their work on the game. Both have composed original music for Hohokum and it’s AMAZING. Tycho’s track ‘L’ – from his new album ‘Awake’ – is the backdrop for Fun Fair in the game and was featured in our announcement trailer, which you can see here. ‘Awake’ is out on March 18th and you can pre-order it here – its soooooo good!
A collaboration between a record label like Ghostly and a game like Hohokum is quite unusual – how did it come about? What made you want to be involved?
Scott Hansen: I met with you, Ricky, and you showed me some early test versions of the levels which used my song L as the music. I was immediately stricken with how well your vision resonated with the sound. It was a very fitting use of the music and I was just honored for the opportunity to have my work associated with such a beautiful work of art.
Ben Benjamin: Contributing music to a video game is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a middle schooler mowing lawns to buy NES games. When I was asked to contribute to Hohokum, I almost had to decline as I was working on my master’s degree and had little time to do anything else. As soon as I saw the beautiful game designs I knew this was too good an opportunity to pass up. I learned how to live with even less sleep.
You met me near the start of the project and we looked at a load of the places at a very early stage: what were your initial impressions?
SH: I was just blown away by how different it was; I’d never seen anything like it. I was very taken with the color spaces and forms, the whole environment felt like a lucid dream.
We used your track in our original trailer, and it’s the music to the Fun Fair, which is probably the most iconic place in Hohokum. One of the most common things people say about it is how much they love the music – have you enjoyed seeing the reaction online?
SH: It’s been nice to see the game come up here and there. I get a lot of people saying they first heard of Tycho through Hohokum or that the game inspired them to explore more of my music. I think there’s something very special about the songs that accompany video games. As a player you develop a very close relationship with the sounds in a game and they can become a bridge between fantasy and reality. Just hearing a song, a voice or a sound from a particular game can sometimes take me back to that space. I think this is particularly relevant with an immersive game like Hohokum where one can easily be drawn into the world it presents.
Your style of music suits Hohokum perfectly – as well as the bespoke track, we’ve used some pieces from past albums in other places: was your composition approach different for the piece you made especially for the game?
SH: I had written the song as I normally would but I revisited it for the purposes of the game. The idea was that the tracks and layers would build as the player explored the different areas of a level so the arrangement had to be approached in a non-linear way.
The pieces you made have a strong audio design sensibility to them – it feels like you’re simultaneously trying to score the mood of the places, but also give a sense of the sounds of them: is this something you do with your own work, or that you’ve tuned into for this project?
BB: The audio design component is an approach I’ve used many times over the years, usually for commercial compositions. Incorporating sounds (some more abstract than others) that might occur in the visual helps me generate music that better cooperates with what appears onscreen.
One of the ways music in certain types of game is unique is that it loops – playing until the player moves on, with no particular beginning or end. How does this affect your work as a composer?
BB: When I would score commercials, it was highly likely to be asked for an edit that required me to change the lengths of various sections to very precise time specifications – and in a way that did not sound jarring. Anticipating these requests slowly changed the way I approached compositions. Almost out of habit, much of what I do accommodates loops and edits quite nicely.
A game developer friend of ours called Niflas has a process where he sometimes composes a piece of music first, and then tries to make a game which fits the music. We didn’t do this for Hohokum, but it’d be an interesting process: do you think you’d be interested in working on videogames in the future – perhaps from the very start of the process (before there’s even anything to look at?)
SH: I certainly want to be more involved in motion graphics of some kind. My goal is to create a short film and score it but I think I could find a similar outlet in working on a game. Video games in general have emerged as a viable art form and the medium provides an incredibly deep platform for expression.
BB: I actually prefer to compose in situations where some kind of limitations are established, whether it be visuals or some other parameter. It reduces the chance of choice paralysis impacting my creative process (one of the main contributors to my releasing very little music overall). Working on games as a composer or programmer is something I’d gladly do in the future.
Thanks guys! The music in Hohokum is a vital part of the experience and we’re so happy to be working with some of our favorite musicians – when we first started working on the game, we had an inspiration playlist with a load of their tracks on it, so it’s beyond cool that we’re working with them. Hope you all love it as much as we do!
That’s it for now. Hohokum will be showing at the PlayStation booth at GDC on both PS4 and Vita, so stop by and check it out if you’re attending the show. We’re in the final stages of development and we’re excited for you all to play it. No street date announcement today (I know, I know) but it’s coming very soon! Promise!
It’s easy to look at Lone Survivor’s art style and think it’s not going to scare you, but this game is legitimately freaky. You’ll take the role of a creeptastic guy attempting to survive in a city overrun by disease, which apparently turns you into a nasty walking ball of fleshy bits. Given the scarcity of ammo, you’ll likely be focused on hiding from the flesh monsters roaming the world versus conducting constant head-on assaults. The story unfolds based on your choices throughout the game and there are multiple endings to discover as a result. The final bonus is that this title is Cross-Buy, so PlayStation Plus members will receive both the PS3 and PS Vita versions of the game.
The Spring Fever sale continues this week with day 1 discounts on Towerfall Ascension and Vessel. The franchise portion of the sale this week focuses on Call of Duty, so check out all of the discounted bundles below.
You can download Lone Survivor: The Director’s Cut after the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow, 3/11.

In Bound by Flame — a gothic RPG for PS4 — the crafting system has an instrumental role. You’ll need it to advance in your journey, as it provides useful upgrades to your character, while also having a strong aesthetic aspect.
Throughout your quest, you’ll loot various materials and components hidden in chests, or from the corpses of your dead enemies. These are the basic components to craft weapons, armor, traps, ammunition, or potions that you’ll need to progress. Don’t underestimate the usefulness of crafting in Bound by Flame; some of the best pieces of equipment are crafted!
The visual customization of your hero is also very deep. Some pieces of armor have up to three slots that can be upgraded, with a direct impact on your character’s appearance. Crafting will transform your hero into a killing machine, and will make you look like a badass in the process.
Crafting ComponentsIn Bound by Flame, the opportunities to gather materials for crafting are many. Killing monsters, looting chests and coffins, or completing quests are all good means to collect various components.
There are a lot of crafting resources, and each of them has several quality levels. Components include metal, gemstone, bones, leather, blood, Hearth dust, and more. Most of these materials can have a tainted variant, implying various new crafting attributes.
While low quality components are very common, you’ll need to gather a large amount of high quality materials to craft the best weapons and armor. Fortunately, low quality components may also be used to create higher quality materials, at the cost of quantity. For instance, three coins let you craft a piece of raw metal, and 4 raw metal pieces will let you craft a piece of refined metal.
Another source of crafting materials will come from recycling your unwanted pieces of equipment. When you find new armor with better stats, you might want to dismantle the old one, in order to get some components back.
Crafting TalentsAs crafting is a key element in Bound by Flame, you’ll have the opportunity to specialize your character for it.
An entire list of talents are dedicated to enhance your efficiency in crafting. As a master in craftmanship, you consume less materials and create more products. You can even boost the amount of loot you find in chests and on corpses.
You cannot carry an unlimited amount of equipment, however. If you reach the weight limit, it affects your movement. But several skills allow the hero to push the limits of his bag capacity, letting you carry more weapons, armor, and materials. You can also enhance your recycling skills to optimize this process.
And all this work will pay off, when you proudly display your shiny new armor.
Armor and Weapon CraftingBound by Flame invites you to create and customize your pieces of equipment at an incredibly deep level.
Vulcan can wear 4 pieces of armor: chest, gloves, boots, and helmet. Each of them can be customized to add various bonuses according to your gameplay style.
Are you an aggressive warrior who likes to charge in the midst of battle? Opt for a pure damage boost for your weapons and physical resistance for your armor. Do you struggle a lot against enemies dealing magic damage? Increase your magic resistance!
Each of these options has a direct impact on the look of your character. Just like armor, the variety of crafting options for weapons is huge. You can customize the guard and the pommel of your blades, your war hammers, and axes. Find the one that suits you. And join the battle with the weapon and the armor you created.
Everything is at your disposal to customize your character with every detail, while giving you the edge you need to overcome the dangerous creatures roaming Vertiel.
Oh, and by the way, don’t hesitate to visit the official website or Spiders devblog for more info, and the official Facebook page to stay tuned on all the news about Bound by Flame.
Welcome to another update on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn — the biggest one so far. A lot of you have probably played the first beta phase from February 22nd to March 3rd — barely enough time to get your hands on one or two classes in a single city, right? Well then, let’s introduce you to the others!
You’re free to start in any of the three cities: Gridania, Ul’dah, or Limsa Lominsa. Most of you will want to get used to the game first, so you can play solo and get acquainted with everything. Up until level 15, you’ve got tons of local quests and adventures that await you — and from level 15 onwards, the whole world opens up to you as you get access to the airship and the other cities.
If you want to play with your friends, you simply have to choose classes with the same starting cities, and you can group up right away.
Once you’ve acquired a class, you can change to it at any given time (outside of combat and dungeons) by simply equipping the weapon associated with it. It’s that simple!
So, let’s get started, shall we?
Gridania, One with the ForestGridania lies in the heart of the Black Shroud, a huge, ancient forest. As you would guess, classes based in Gridania are in great parts based on natural harmony, hunting, and surviving. If you like to start your game in tranquillity and natural splendour, this is the way to go.
The classes you’ll find here are suited to this abundance of natural resources. It’s the starting city for…
Archers
Masters of the Hunt with Bow and Arrow
Archers are ranged damage dealers, specialists at keeping enemies at a distance while launching a hailstorm of arrows at them. Archers can later train to become Bards.
Lancers
Tackle the Mightiest Boar in Thick Armor
Lancers are melee combatants, able to inflict considerable damage to any enemy foolish enough to come into reach of their lance. Lancers can later on train to become Dragoons.
Conjurers
Calling Upon Nature’s Magic
Conjurers are well versed in powerful healing magic, preferably with a considerable distance between them and the enemy. Conjurers can later on train to become White Mages.
Of course, there’s also a rich industry based on the goods that the forest provides! As such, you can find the guilds for the following classes here:
Check out this video to hear the different background tunes for Gridania.
Ul’dah, Jewel of the DesertIf trading’s your thing, then the city of Ul’dah is for you. The trading capital in the middle of a vast desert was built by busy Lalafell traders and is very proud of the riches it’s amassed over time. If you want to prove yourself in a harsh climate, this is the city for you.
The classes that call this bustling city their home are among the most fearsome of all of Eorzea.
Thaumaturges
Masters of Destructive Magic
Thaumaturges rain down havoc on their enemies in the form of fire, lightning, and ice from the side of the field, bringing a quick end to anyone standing in their way. They can train to become Black Mages.
Pugilists
Wreak Havoc with Powerful Fist Weapons
Pugilists are proud close combatants, pummelling their enemies and rivalling Thaumaturges in terms of inflicted damage. They can train to become Monks.
Gladiators
Skilful Adepts of Sword and Shield
Gladiators are front line fighters and always careful to not let their targets attack their friends. They can train to become Paladins.
Other guilds have also found the bustling markets and riches of this city very attractive.
Listen to some of the background tunes of Ul’dah.
Limsa Lominsa, Bracing the TidesIf you always like a fresh breeze and green, fertile land next to a gorgeous beach, and the idea of seafood makes your mouth water, then Limsa Lominsa is the place for you. What was once a safe haven for pirates has become one of the most beautiful cities in all of Eorzea!
If you’re into fighting, you better be in it for good, as Limsa Lominsa hosts two renowned guilds for those willing to brave the sea itself:
Arcanists
Masters of Magic Through Equations and Formulae
Arcanists calculate both attack and healing spells from their books — and to keep the enemies off them, summon magical beasts! They can train to become Summoners or Scholars.
Marauders
Masters of Destruction with a Trusty Greataxe
Front line fighters that every enemy should fear — and if not them, then their fearful, massive weapons that could probably sink a ship. They can train to become Warriors.
But no one would say that old pirates wouldn’t know how to earn some honest money as well! You’ll find plenty of guilds to make you some money.
And, last but not least, check out some of the background music that will await you as a visitor to Limsa Lominsa.
Wow, that article got a bit longer than I initially planned. Glad to see that you’re still reading! Do you think we should go into a bit more detail about the classes in a future update? If yes, please let us know in the comments!
And that’s it for this week!
Strider… strode to the top of the PS4 charts on PlayStation Store this month, with Thief, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, and Tomb Raider Definitive Edition nipping at its heels.
Minecraft is sittin’ pretty at number one on PS3, but Castle Crashers made a valiant push to try and dethrone it, beating out even the mighty Grand Theft Auto V for the runner-up spot. The Last of Us fans snapped up Left Behind, the new single-player story chapter, vaulting it to the top spot for PS3 add-ons.
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z ruled the month on PS Vita, with Toukiden and Dustforce cleaning up at number 2 and 3, respectively.
As always, head over to the EU PlayStation.Blog to see how your faves stacked up on their side. What’s going to take top honors in March? Perhaps a certain Seattle-set adventure from our friends at Sucker Punch? Maybe the local multiplayer sensation TowerFall Ascension? Or will the boys from South Park use the Stick of Truth’s immense power to rule the month?

On PS4, no less! Based on what little we know about Arkham Knight, I think we can already safely get hyped up for it. Batmobile!
We’ve got yet another bunch of discounts on deck (extra dollars saved if you’re a PS Plus member). Watch_Dogs got an official release date — May 27th. Fez is out later this month, and it looks like the PS4 version is the best iteration of the indie legend yet. We got an unsettling new trailer for SOMA, the upcoming PS4 horror title from the makers of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Bandai Namco dropped off a few hot tips for Dark Souls II (out Tuesday). Hatsune Miku made her portable debut in North America on Tuesday with the release of Project Diva f on PS Vita. Two PS3 favorites are making the jump to PS4 with new upgrades in tow: PixelJunk Shooter and Guacamelee! I wiped both those games clean on their original release, and I’ll be happy to do it again with a DualShock 4.
Oh, and one last thing: we’ve now sold more than six million PS4s, and we can’t thank you all enough for the support. Game on, friends.
