Hi PlayStation.Blog! This is Olga from Frogwares, and I get to tell you about our latest game, Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments.

We’ve been developing Sherlock Holmes games for over a decade now, and the recent reinventions of Sherlock Holmes in the new movies and series have put a spin on the character and the world he lives in.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments is a detective game; it needs you to think. The game focuses heavily on investigation, and with an emphasis on narration, too. There’s a lot of exploration and clue collecting, speaking to witnesses and suspects, and — the most important aspect — bringing all of these together to make your own deductions and bring the culprits to justice… or setting them free.

With this new Sherlock Holmes game, we really wanted to involve the player to a degree that they’ve never experienced before, both emotionally and intellectually. In Crimes & Punishments, your brain will be, once more, put to the test. This time we’re offering six different cases, with each one not having a single conclusion, but up to six, with the knowledge that each of them could incriminate a different suspect!

12227185923_0dc0aa7a2e_n.jpg12227414864_2fa436e0e3_n.jpg

Focused on sleuthing, Crimes & Punishments features brand new gameplay mechanics, like character portrait, which are vital for your investigation. While interrogating suspects, you’ll now be able to observe and examine their general look in order to unlock their mind, unveiling new clues.

Your innate deduction skills will also allow you to react to a piece of information divulged by the person in question. You then have several seconds to link it to another clue you picked up earlier and to then deduce yet another key element that another investigator would have overlooked!

For the first time in the Sherlock Holmes series, the famous sleuth can get it wrong and send innocents to jail. In order to help you find the right criminal, we’ve worked hard on a brand new deduction board. We really wanted the player to feel like they are the greatest detective of all time. Each of your discoveries are stored in his fantastic brain, allowing you to match them together, creating a real network of clues, helping you elucidate crime scenes, find suspects, and determine guilt.

Once you’ve named your culprit, you’ll be facing a crucial decision: will you condemn or absolve them? This particular point is important, as it can impact the future of your investigations. At the end of the case, you’ll be given a detective score, and a moral choice that you’ll be able to compare with your friends and the community!

On top of these brand new features, we’ve also worked hard on the atmosphere and improved the graphics of the game thanks to Unreal Engine. We paid a lot of attention to the smallest details to make sure that the player always feels like they’re Sherlock Holmes.

12227414894_2d9abe20a9_z.jpg

But it’s not only about finding the criminal (as well as his motive and how exactly he did what he did), but there’s also a moral choice for you to make: absolve or condemn the suspect. The law is free from passion, right? Choose wisely, for your decisions will influence lives.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments arrives this year for both PS3 and PS4. If you want to get more info about the title, don’t hesitate to visit the official website. Stay tuned, and I look forward to showing you more!

In quite possibly video game's weirdest collaboration, Tokyo Jungle developer Crispy's is teaming up on a new game with Grasshopper Manufacture's resident oddball, Goichi "Suda51" Suda.

The game is called Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day, a playable interactive chapter part of Short Peace - an upcoming anime short-film compilation from Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo. Titular heroine Ranko Tsukigime attends school by day, but at night goes on assassination missions. Thankfully we graduated before murder became a mandatory part of the curriculum.

Crispy's will handle development duties on Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day while Suda51 will assume the role of director. Namco Bandai has announced it will publish Ranko Tsukigime's Longest Day on PS3 this spring.

Spider-Man is pretty incredible among super heroes. Rather than hide away from the world when confronted with the death of a loved one, he uses that very personal loss as motivation to invest even greater in society. Spider-Man can tango with street thugs, mutant hybrids, and mechanical monstrosities, but he’s not above your everyday cat-in-tree rescue. He doesn’t have a secret lair or concealed base of operations; he’s just a guy in bright blue and red tights doing mid-air somersaults down Fifth Avenue. He wants to be seen. He enjoys this.

We had a few core goals for The Amazing Spider-Man 2: invigorate the experience with greater variety in play, more focused storytelling, and more natural pacing; deliver a world worth protecting; and finally, give you all the tools you need to make it fun to do so. It means improving and refining on what came before with fresh content, to be certain, but it also means staying true to that unique personality, using it to inform every decision we make.

12107026476_d54412c3ed_z.jpg

We’ve added a few new things to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to achieve that end. First and foremost, we think sandboxes work best when the player’s actions (or inaction) impact the game experience, so we’re introducing the Hero or Menace system, which rewards players who save citizens and keep crime rates down through side activities — with some potentially meaningful consequences for those who shirk Spider-Man’s responsibilities. And to make it more interesting, we’ve added new crimes to thwart, like arson and hostage rescue crises, while further developing the existing ones from the first game.

Equally important is getting the “neighborhood” part of “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” right, and creating a more diverse New York City that’s fun to spend time in. That starts with revising our Manhattan, getting it closer to the look and feel of the real thing, complete with more varied buildings and architecture, distinct districts, more realistic street sizes, and more reasons to explore.

This design philosophy of focusing on Manhattan is about more than just mixing up the aesthetics; we want the city to be your playground, which means treating it as more than a hub for going off to other, more confined places. More missions and side activities take place within the city, and many progress dynamically (e.g., you fight some thugs in the streets, their leader takes off in a car, and you chase him down). This also means getting away from the constraints of what typically defines a “level” in Spidey games, opening them up in a way that offers far more variety.

Underlying all these additions and revisions is ensuring that Spider-Man himself is still a joy to play. Web Rush — a great mechanic introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man that offers movement and action choices on-the-fly — is back, along with new abilities like dodges, rolls, and critical strikes. There are also new upgrades and special powers.

Web-swinging works a bit differently this time around, and if it’s always bothered you that Spidey can somehow soar above the city, shooting webbing into thin air rather than swinging through it, you’ll be pleased to learn the web-head now attaches to actual objects in the environment.

Moreover, by opting for more open spaces, we can offer players greater choice in tackling combat encounters — most notably by drastically increasing the number of opportunities for viable stealth solutions, as well as increasing Spidey’s prowess when striking from the shadows.

12106749964_0980d6b55b_z.jpg

If that’s not your thing, new enemy countertypes add greater depth and challenge to combat brawls, discouraging button-mashing and incentivizing you to use your whole arsenal. We’re also changing up the pace of upgrades so that they’re something you acquire appreciably throughout the adventure.

That improved sense of pacing also applies to the story, which we’ve been crafting closely with Marvel with great attention to character. Taking place alongside the events of the movie this time (rather than after-the-fact), it takes on a more personal tone for both Spider-Man, on the hunt for Uncle Ben’s killer, and Peter Parker himself, who will have his own role to play in the narrative outside of the costume (which I’m personally excited for).

The game’s impressive cast of villains will also get their due, playing a more central role throughout the plot while providing some memorable boss showdowns.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 lands this spring on PS4 and PS3.

Hello all! Dave from FuturLab here. I’m excited to announce that Surge Deluxe will be released on February 4th, 2014, exclusively for PS Vita! Check out the electrically charged game play trailer here:

Surge Deluxe features lightning-fast match-three gameplay, and rewards those who can think strategically under pressure!

Since Surge was originally released on PS Mobile we’ve had a ton of feedback, and Surge Deluxe on PS Vita is our response to that feedback. We’ve added unique shapes for each color block, so colorblind people can compete on an even playing field, and we’ve added depth to the scoring system with new special block types that reward quick thinking and understanding of the game mechanics.

Hi everybody, my name is Shannon Studstill, Director of Santa Monica Studio! It’s hard to believe we started this studio 14 years ago with Sony veteran Allan Becker, who now heads up Sony Japan. The original core team formed together in a bunch of small cubed offices at PlayStation’s old headquarters, in what was the former 989 Studios. It was here that our small team established the foundation and vision for a new studio.

12202097545_22b3a436e2_n.jpg12202352603_0d9897d900_n.jpg

It was clear the walls at “989” mixed with the good folks focused on the corporate business proved to be a not so artistic environment to foster our much needed creative culture. We needed to create games in a space with no walls, away from the daily “business”, where our collaboration as a creative team and family, would lead us to incredible designs.

Now 14 years later with 47 games published at this studio here in Santa Monica, it definitely feels like we made the right decision. As we continue our expansion, we’re preparing to say goodbye to this long-time home, and move into a new cutting-edge facility that will meet the needs of our growing team for the next era of Santa Monica Studio.

We won’t be moving far, actually — just a few miles south to Playa Vista (Check it out on Google Maps). For old-timers at Santa Monica Studio, especially those with us since Day 1, it’s hard to believe there was ever a time we moved into an early 1900’s train station — yes, our current home is an old train station — and it felt like new. There are so many great memories over the course of the last decade as we’ve grown to occupy this entire building, from a team that started with 16 people, to a bustling studio family over 220 strong.

Our current building and the atmosphere that it provides has proven to be a strong part of the fabric of who we are today despite earthquakes, chronic power outages, and even the occasional ghost sighting (watch our Halloween video). Within these battled walls we developed games like Kinetica and the God of War series, and fostered incredible partnerships with talented External Developers who brought classics like Journey, Sound Shapes, Fat Princess, and The Unfinished Swan to life.

12202702856_8741f2b7ae_z.jpg
12202341573_6268c85346_z.jpg

Nostalgia aside, excitement for our new Santa Monica Studio is building. Our new facility dramatically increases the size of our open floor plan, which will allow all our disciplines to collaborate closer than ever before. Our “no walls” creative culture approach and unfettered collaboration between every person and department are central to our game development processes.

The facility will also house a state-of-the-art recording studio, along with being just steps away from a brand-new cutting-edge motion capture facility. The new mo-cap facility is being constructed from the ground up, literally adjacent to our new studio. It will be used specifically to facilitate the needs of all game development coming not only out of Santa Monica Studio, but our good friends at Naughty Dog as well.

12202341333_744db5ed18_z.jpg

The move couldn’t be coming at a better time. With PS4 off to a historic start in the US and Europe, our new facility in Playa Vista will enable us to meet the needs of this powerful new game platform. If you were impressed by what our designers and engineers pulled off with PS3’s technology, just wait until you see their capabilities on PS4.

Santa Monica Studios is always looking for great new talent to join our family. We are searching for people across all disciplines to work side-by-side with our phenomenal creative teams, alongside game directors like Stig Asmussen and Cory Barlog, both of whom have led the creation of our God of War games. You can also keep tabs on our hardworking creatives via regular updates on the new Santa Monica Studio website, with everything from game development insights and career advice, to updates on upcoming games like Hohokum and The Order: 1886.

Feel free to follow us on Twitter or Facebook for updates relating to our big studio move later this year, our games, and our team. Thank you for your continued passion in our games, and above all else, players first!

PlayStation and PS2 backward compatibility may soon be coming to the PlayStation 4, a source close to Sony told Eurogamer this week.

Notably, the source stated that backward-compatible PSOne and PS2 games would be stored locally on PlayStation 4 consoles and recreated via emulation. The claim runs contrary to Sony's previously announced plans to offer PS1 and PS2 games remotely via its PlayStation Now streaming service. According to Eurogamer's source, Sony still plans to make legacy PlayStation 3 games available via cloud streaming on the PlayStation 4.

The source additionally claims that Sony is working to ensure that backward-compatible games are optimized for native HD resolutions, eliminating the blurred upscaling seen in emulated releases on the PlayStation 3. We've reached out to Sony for comment regarding these rumored features, and currently await a response.
