CES 2014 is in the books, PlayStation Now has been officially unveiled, and it’s back to business as usual in Videogame Land.

Don’t Starve is out now on PS4, and accomplishing the task proposed by its title has proven more difficult than anticipated. If you tuned in to one of our two livestreams of the game this week (hint, hint), you saw us struggling to build fires, gather supplies, and eat flower petals to stay alive in an unforgiving wilderness. I think we could use a few tips.

Ryan, being the lucky devil he is, got to play both Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2. Thankfully, he’s a generous devil and he’s published his impressions from both right here on PlayStation.Blog. I never got to Tomb Raider on PS3 myself, so Lara’s next-gen debut can’t come soon enough.

But we’ve got a couple weeks until Tomb Raider comes to PS4. Until then, I think I’ll dive back into Assassin’s Creed IV and destroy some of Sid’s scores in The Pinball Arcade a bit more soundly. What are you playing this weekend?

  • I’m playing: Don’t Starve, The Pinball Arcade
  • I’m watching: Aziz Ansari: Buried Alive
  • I’m listening to: The Bird and the Bee, Janelle Monáe (thanks Ryan!)

At Media Molecule we’re in love with real-world materials, particularly ones that allow creative expression (just look at our games!), so it was great to be asked to get involved in attempting to make a ‘physical keynote’ for CES as part of Kaz Hirai’s presentation. A presentation where the slides would be made live in front of the camera to present the memories, influences, insights and dreams Kaz would be expressing on stage. A keynote with extremely realistic physics — because everything was real and physical!

So thanks to a 4K camera, a bunch of motors to control the camera, a very talented film crew, and a giant scroll of paper for it all to point at, our stage was set!

It was such a buzz doing it all live, the three of us (Karen, Tim and myself) trying to match what we were doing with Kaz’s speech, whether that was painting, drawing, collaging or sliding real Sony products onto the paper scene. I think it really represents how personal technology can and should be. Phones are made to be held and used, cameras are designed for capturing and sharing beautiful memories, and games give us experiences that make us laugh and shout and fall off the couch.

But the most exciting part for me (apart from meeting Vince Gilligan OMG) was seeing the video of the Mm team, showing the sometimes hard roads we take to make games we really love and want to pass on to others. I had real goosebumps seeing that video playing on the backstage monitors, a little bit of homesickness, missing the team back in the UK, but a whole lot of pride for what they’ve all achieved!

Sony has listed the top-selling PlayStation Network games across all of its platforms in December, outlining the most popular digital releases in the month following the PlayStation 4's launch.

EA DICE's Battlefield 4 ranks in as PSN's biggest-selling PlayStation 4 game in December, while Call of Duty: Ghosts emerged as the platform's most popular digital upgrade. Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition rose to the top of the PS3's charts in its debut month, meanwhile, beating out the first episode of The Walking Dead's second season and Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5.

505 Games' Terraria led PS Vita software sales last month, as Media Molecule's Tearaway and Drinkbox Studios' Guacamelee! trailed close behind at second and third place. The full platform-specific sales charts are available at the PlayStation Blog.

On Tuesday, Sony’s CEO Kaz Hirai gave the opening keynote speech of CES 2014. He spoke about some of the successes (And failures!) that Sony has had in the past, and took the opportunity to lay out his vision for the future of the company, emphasizing that its products and services need to deliver “wow” experiences to its customers.

We were honored that Media Molecule was highlighted in the keynote as a kind of apotheosis of this concept (Yay, us!), embracing the desire to deliver something special and truly unique and “wow” in each of our games. We were excited to work with the team to put together this little video for his prezzo, where we discuss our creative process and vision for our games.

If you didn’t catch the livestream, we wanted to share this video with you here on PlayStation.Blog, as it gives our fans and the gaming community another look into the happenings that go on behind the scenes while we work on developing our creations.

That wasn’t our only involvement though — if you watch Kaz’s full speech you’ll spot our very own Rex Crowle, Tearaway’s creative director, taking part in the live performance shenanigans on the live animation screen behind Kaz.

Being an independent game developer sure has been a bumpy ride. After making Spider-Man 2, I quit my sweet gig at Activision to see if I could make games my own way, on my own terms. I’ve been through a lot since then! I founded a company with a friend. We built it up, had several employees, health insurance, and everything… only to see it come crashing down.

So now I’m on my own again, starting over from scratch. But maybe things are turning around? By revisiting the coolest thing I’ve ever done — swinging game mechanics — and launching an unorthodox Kickstarter for the game, called Energy Hook, my new company Happion Labs seems to be on an upward trajectory.

And the latest piece of good news: I’m going to be able to bring Energy Hook to PS4 and PS Vita!

So, what’s Energy Hook? Well, imagine a 3D swinging game like Spider-Man 2 had a love child with “points-for-style” game SSX. You swing from rooftop to rooftop, pull off mid-air tricks, run along walls, and rack up points and energy for doing it. Because: it’s the future. And that’s what the extreme sports of the future look like. You have gravity beams and gravity boots and jetpacks and can do awesome stuff.

11855913686_5684a3b3a2_z.jpg

PS Vita is my favorite handheld. There’s no handheld like it. Nothing else comes with dual sticks, and Energy Hook wants those dual sticks! It’s a very expressive game that wants precision controls. A touchscreen is not enough. I daresay it’s going to be the first, decent, 3D swinging game to hit a handheld.

And I’m also glad to be bringing it to PS4. Mark Cerny has been my hero for years; in fact, we borrowed from his playbook to make Spider-Man 2. So to see him be a frontman for PS4 warms my heart. I can’t wait to see how Energy Hook performs on the new hardware; I’m sure it’s going to be awesome. (I’m not sure what I’m going to do with all that power… but I’ll think of something.)

Energy Hook will be hitting PlayStation first, and I’m totally stoked. I’m looking forward to getting the game in your hands in 2014, and can’t wait to see what you think.

We’ve finally finished OlliOlli, and what’s even better, we now have a release date: January 21st!

As you may know, this our first PS Vita game, so it’s been a big challenge for us – a challenge that’s been well worth it (and we hope you’ll think so, too). We originally planned to launch before the holiday, but due to some technical issues we had to push back. We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who patiently supported us throughout 2013, including fans, press, and all the crew at PlayStation – especially Shahid and Spencer.

11841104564_ca1e142966_z.jpg

Now that we’re on the path to releasing OlliOlli into the wild, it seems pertinent to give you the final details about all four modes and the game’s Trophies (in case you didn’t see them when they accidentally leaked last month)!

Career Mode: 50 deviously handcrafted levels split between Amateur and Pro. The further you progress, the more accuracy and timing you’ll need to reach the adoring crowd at the end of each run.

Each level has five challenges, including Combo and Score attacks, and is linked to its own global leaderboard. Think you can get that number one spot? Better get practicing…

11841464346_e43153cba6_n.jpg11841464296_e3a47bc18f_n.jpg

Spots Mode: every time you get to the end of a level you unlock the corresponding spot. Spots are also individually linked to their own online leaderboards, the difference being they require you to perform one stupendously large combo to reach the end! It’s going to be a case of working out the best possible combination of tricks and grinds that you can fit into the spot’s limited obstacles in order to get the best score. Sam, our lead QA, got 157k on Spot 1. See if you can beat that!

Daily Grind: this mode really heightens the competition, along with a massive risk. Each day, everyone in the world gets the same spot to pull an amazing combo on. You can practice that spot as many times as you like, but you only get ONE GO to set your score. Slam on your face, or mess up the landing, and there are no second chances! So you better make sure you’re fully focused before playing it for real.

Check OlliOlli’s Creative Director John Ribbins demonstrating this with “hilarious consequences.

11840673095_20abb1af0b_z.jpg

RAD Mode: RAD mode alludes to the initial concept demo, and only allows Perfect Landings and Perfect Grinds. Basically when we first made OlliOlli, this was how it played (it’s really punishing). We had to tone things down a little to make the game more approachable, but for the hardcore pixel skaters out there, this is the ultimate challenge.

We’re not sayin’ how RAD mode is unlocked, but let’s just say you’re going to have to prove you know what you’re doing!

So that leaves Trophies: one Gold, three Silver, and eight Bronze. You can see the full list here. My personal favorite is “Explorer” — we made five little hidden spots throughout the game and hid golden skateboards in them. Not only will you get a Trophy for finding all the spots, they’re also a sneaky way to extend your combo and get a better score. We’ve made the last Gold a bit hardcore, so high fives to the first person that can get all the Trophies!

Finally, the price. We’ll be letting you know on launch day.

Thanks for reading, and check out the full trailer!

We recently added the first batch of sounds to Road Not Taken, and the team got really excited, like the game was finally coming together! It’s funny because it was such a small thing in relation to the huge amount of work that has already gone into the game, but it really highlights the difference sound can make in the way we experience things.

The world of Road Not Taken is made up of magical and natural surroundings. That makes me happy, because even though I love the bleeps and bloops you can get from synthesis, my favorite way to make sounds is from scratch like a foley artist.

It just so happened that I started working on the RNT audio catalog in the fall, right when there were piles of dried leaves everywhere — perfect! I brought a bucket of them inside and rustled them, crunched and dropped them… my studio was a mess! Also, if you listen closely to the end of the second RNT teaser, you can hear some percussion that was made from dry sticks. At the time I was at a cottage on vacation with my family, so I used a makeshift set-up to build that sample instrument. I expect that you’ll hear it again.

ZO_D5PzqutI-I7F02zvX32BXcFBPJWD8OrpakW2mHhBnbVZ3BZP4U9mZO9Gsk9ZRtlYlyWG81SI49WHqpGcSDgOyrDSzfcLnIEm4cBX7whYJlCwhNnsCZpnZjQ

I’ve also been recording my kids (2 and 6) as much as possible in order to get the iconic sounds we need for the children, but it’s really hard to get the right sounds on demand!

xmjTgJRXTjfy615IQyPOWyUk2asA9ocmZ7h8rtNQvmtbHmEnmU8YipJiB6ZyeYHwfS9WHn5Fhk5pfUVRGyVzJuUqHqrEav8k0eABw6nECqi4WpRXsUZq2MOVdA

My search for organic sounds extends into the music you will hear in Road Not Taken. There is nothing that can sound quite like the real thing. I’m very lucky to be a part of a vibrant community of musicians that play traditional instruments, so I brought my friend Dan Restivo to come play his rare hand-made wooden flute that you hear in the teaser. My bandmate, Kristin Cavoukian, adds to the vibe with her voice. Here’s something I threw together quickly from the outtakes of that session:

D47qmOXAj8f7FSSMVdGIxwXNCKEdBiYDboDb7ijWRtu-KZ9K3zZo0uSUtTdWzwgecIm_UhGMjvVJftHxqNl0HadvnfPGoENDGo_5iack4pmdlKxysOe3UQOA9w64uENkMS8AJt4LNpxZ3ejjCoj6-BGAszo5bT5falCzgtasmHOOejinbNAM0iXvWa1DJmLsV8IcIyuud_r-IHXdWRw18Mu0nCEWvVhPuUb44SoHQykZXhP4HPEQ

Of course, how you use the sounds in a game is as important to their final impact as the sounds themselves, so I feel fortunate that Spry Fox veteran Cristian Soulos has taken the time show me around some of the code and enabled me to get in there and tinker with it myself. You can never really tell how audio is going to feel until it’s actually in the game, so it’s invaluable for me to be able to experiment with sounds in the Road Not Taken engine myself, as opposed to tossing them over the wall to the programming team.

RNT is designed to be played for many hours, so we’ve also been working together to find ways to provide variety in the background sound, as well as subtle variations in some of the sounds you hear constantly. If we get it right, you’ll hopefully feel immersed in the game and won’t be tempted to hit the mute button, even after several hours of playing.

The last gameplay trailer that we released showcased some of the in-game audio work that I’ve been doing for the very first time. I’m not done iterating on some of the stuff you hear in there, but by the time this video was released, I had already gone through several iterations on some of these sounds. When you’re doing something over and over again in a game, potentially thousands (or tens of thousands!) of times, it’s really important that it sound perfect!

Well, that’s all for now. I hope you enjoyed this post. If you have any thoughts on the audio work you’ve experienced thus far, or have some requests for things we might do in the future, please leave some comments for me! I’ll be sure to read them. :)
