It's no surprise Ace Combat: Infinity won't land this year, making it the second of Namco's free-to-play PS3 games to barrel roll into 2014. Both it and Soulcalibur: Lost Swords were due in 2013, but with the year rapidly drawing to a close, Namco Bandai made their delays official.

As Gematsu reports, the official vagary from Namco is the delay was made to provide a "better" end product. Both games underwent beta testing in recent months, with a closed Ace Combat: Infinity beta ending yesterday in Japan.

Namco hasn't provided official word on what to expect from either game's microtransactions. In October, Ace Combat Brand Manager Kazutoki Kono told Joystiq going down the F2P route was "maybe a difficult call" given some apprehension from fans, but that he believed it would prove worthwhile and wouldn't affect Infinity's quality.

With the recent release of A Realm Awoken, the first major content patch for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, we’re pleased to introduce a fun seasonal event for players to enjoy. The annual Starlight Celebration has returned, and the citizens of the three city-states have done their best to decorate the towns for the occasion. Unfortunately, the snowmen they ordered from the frozen north were kidnapped (Snownapped?) en route!

Adventurers around the realm must get to the bottom of this chilly mystery and find out why the snowmen have disappeared. Could it be the mischievous imps behind the attacks? Save the snowmen, save the world.

Those adventurers willing to brave the elements will be rewarded handsomely with new seasonal outfits designed around a snowman, reindeer, and even a set of “red and white” gear that matches a certain someone’s outfit… There’s even cute reindeer barding to equip your personal chocobo with. The Starlight Celebration will be available until December 31st, 2013, so be sure to join in.

11439274884_44df7a3bdc_n.jpg11439303706_c08cc83075_n.jpg

After you complete the event, be sure to check out a ton of new content that made its debut in patch 2.1 — like four vs. four PvP, a huge new 24-person raid (the Crystal Tower from FF III), new dungeons, extreme versions of the primal battles, daily beast tribe quests, and much, much more. Check out the official patch 2.1 website and dive into the world of A Realm Reborn.

Happy Holidays on behalf of the Final Fantasy XIV team!

Every Tuesday, there are new games, apps, and updates added to PlayStation Mobile. UFO Dad — our featured game of the week — and Night Riders were released this week. We also have a ton of updates on the way.

We’re at the midpoint of our Festive Giveaway, which started Thanksgiving week. If you didn’t get a chance to snag some of the games then, we’ll kick it back up (after a break for Christmas) during the week of January 8th.

Also, don’t forget that you still have time to pick up either an Xperia Z smartphone or tablet to get 10 free PlayStation Mobile games, a 60 day trial of Music Unlimited, and six free movies (including Elysium). Click here for details.

New Releases

UFO Dad by Edit Mode ($4.29)

Kevin Oke, Lead Designer and founder of Edit Mode, provided us some insight into this exclusive for PlayStation Mobile:

We at Edit Mode are extremely proud to bring you UFO Dad, exclusively on PlayStation Mobile. UFO Dad is a mashup of platforming and match 3 — think varying degrees of Mr. Driller + Tetris Attack + Bejeweled + Sokoban. Development was largely inspired by Mr. Driller (a series I love), but over time the game has taken shape into its current form.

11427686513_d8149d2541_n.jpg11427686663_92bd5b472a_n.jpg

We’re very excited to be one of the first PlayStation Mobile titles to support PSN leaderboards, so you can compete with your friends for intergalactic (or just neighborhood) grilling supremacy.

Our hero is a suburban dad, master of the grill, sufferer of male pattern baldness, and wearer of sandals with socks. His homemade “wonder spatula” has attracted attention from those beyond the Milky Way — hungry aliens have come to abduct him and steal his scrumptious burgers!

Armed with the “Wonder Spatula,” you can use it to chain burgers of the same color, keep the invaders at bay, and go for the highest score. The more burgers you chain, the more points you earn. Our hero will have to stay on his toes and be careful as the UFO’s tractor beam will try to pull him and his burgers upward. Survive the invasion, unlock new family members, and compete to dominate the online leaderboards!

In the future we’ll be updating the game with new features for free. Follow us on Twitter to stay in the loop.

Night Riders, 3D Arcade Racing by Baka-Neko.FR ($1.79)

Night Riders is a 3D motorbike racing game inspired by 80′s arcade classics. Ride through 10 beautiful tracks and 4 challenging courses!

It’s been almost a year since the season finale of The Walking Dead: A Telltale Games Series, and we know a lot of you have been wondering what the world has in store next for Clementine… today, we get to find out! The season premiere episode, All That Remains, is available to download today for PS3 on PlayStation Store for $4.99.

I don’t want to say too much for fear of spoiling the episode, but if you missed last week’s trailer and want a little sneak peek, check it out below.

We’re working with PlayStation to get the Season Pass option up as soon as possible — stay tuned for info on that.

If you’re looking to wait until the Season Pass option becomes available on PlayStation Store, remember to check out the Season One DLC Episode, 400 Days. Not only will choices from Season One carry into Season Two, but choices from 400 Days will affect your Season Two playthrough as well.

Haven’t played Telltale’s first season of The Walking Dead? It’s not too late to get caught up for Season Two. The Walking Dead: Episode One — A New Day is free to download right now, so you can see where it all began.

As ever, thanks for reading, and be sure to let us know what you think of All That Remains in the comments… but please be mindful of spoilers for fellow readers who have not yet had time to play!

Hello, PlayStation.Blog readers! Greetings from the magical winter wonderland* of Finland. I’m Jaakko from multiplatform game developer 10tons. Even though we’ve been around for ten years now, we’re genuinely excited to make our PS Vita debut this week.

The game we’ve chosen to be the spearhead of our entry to PS Vita is Sparkle. It’s a marble shooter puzzle game, and probably the most popular game we’ve ever made. The game is actually out on PS Vita in Europe already, and we’ve received a whole lot of positive reviews and feedback on it. Many noted that this particular subgenre of match-three is extremely underrepresented on PS Vita. Not anymore!

What sets Sparkle apart from many marble shooters are the big and brash power-ups, considerable level of challenge, and the slightly dark, mysterious theme. This type of game fits mobile gaming really well, and PS Vita is the ultimate device to play it on. Playing Sparkle with the touchscreen is fast and accurate, but if you prefer thumbstick controls, they’re there as well.

11407323036_bfc124da68_n.jpg11407465453_56cb7619e9_n.jpg

We’re also really happy it’s possible to offer free trials of games on PS Vita. We realize we’re probably not known among PS Vita gamers, and as a small developer we don’t have much in the way of marketing muscle. The free trial of Sparkle means anyone can check the game out and then unlock the full version for $4.99 if they like it. So give the game a spin — we think you’ll like it!

Going forward, we’ll be bringing a few of our other titles to PS Vita in the coming months, and we plan to have a free trial available for all of them. Next up is the spectacular, physics-based puzzle game King Oddball, hopefully some time in January.

If you have any questions, leave them in the comments — I’ll be happy to answer them. Thanks for reading, and try Sparkle when it’s out later today.

*Currently, “magical winter wonderland” refers to a mess of ice and sleet.

Happy holidays, everyone! Furmins — an innovative physics puzzle game — is out today on PS Vita.

In Furmins, players guide a bunch of adorable creatures across cunningly designed levels by rearranging a variety of items, as well as using bumpers and conveyor belts in real-time with coordinated precision. The quest at hand: to travel across the length of their world to wake up their King, who has fallen asleep and rolled over a river to form an impromptu dam that threatens their very existence! Strategically placed items create pathways and physical chain reactions, which guide the furmins to the basket — and level completion.

The PS Vita version offers exclusive features such as a brand new scoring system, global and per-world scoreboards with filters (overall, friends, your score), and the possibility to play with both the touch screen and rear touch pad.

Knack launched alongside PS4 in every territory, and now that there’s been some time for the players to get up to speed on our game, I wanted to talk a bit more about the unlockable features waiting within. As you probably know, there are hidden treasure chests in secret rooms scattered throughout the story which contain random items.

Some of those items are parts of gadgets that will help Knack in his quest; however the treasure chests also contain more exotic items called Crystal Relics. There are six different types of Crystal Relics, and if you collect enough of one type, you can unlock a special Knack that can be used when replaying the game, or in one of the challenge modes that you unlock upon beating the game.

For example, collecting 15 Ruby Relics unlocks Vampire Knack, who has stronger attacks, but also a weakness — he’s slowly melting, Parts drop off his body and he loses health as he fights. He can replenish that health by defeating enemies, so in a sense he’s sucking their energy into himself! So as soon as you collect the required 15 Ruby Relics, you can start the game from the beginning, playing this time as Vampire Knack. It’s a special challenge — easier in areas where there are lots of enemies, much tougher when the enemies are scarce and Knack has little to feed off of.

11341837153_dc3cfbb4b3_n.jpg11341775476_ab7e75967d_n.jpg

Two more characters — Massive Knackand Brittle Knack, which are unlocked respectively by collecting Emerald Relics and Aquamarine Relics — have even stronger attacks than Vampire Knack, but each has a weakness. Massive Knack can only store one super move’s worth of energy, and Brittle Knack is… well… brittle. His punches, kicks, and dash attack are all much more powerful, but he shatters easily when hit — overall, this definitely gives combat a faster feel.

Sunstone Knack — which can be unlocked by collecting Sunstone Relics — is all about the super moves. Not only do the super moves last longer and do more damage, but Sunstone Knack can pick up energy from defeated enemies and fill up the super move gauge much more quickly. He’s tough at any size! Do try to avoid getting hit, though; Sunstone Knack’s defensive power is a touch on the weak side.

If you collect 20 Amethyst Relics, you can unlock Dark Knack. He has the best defense of any character in the game, so he can absorb twice as much damage before dying. Like the other characters, though, he has a weakness. In the case of Dark Knack, he needs to collect twice as many sunstones before unleashing a super move.

And finally, if you pick up 10 Diamond Relics — the rarest of the rare — you can unlock Diamond Knack. He’s strong all around: better attacks, stronger super moves, and he can fill his super move gauge twice as fast as any other character. This is definitely the toughest — and the hardest to unlock — character in the game.

These six characters can be used in replaying the game, and they can also be used in two special challenge modes, playable with one or two players, that are unlocked by completing the game at any difficulty: Time Attack and Coliseum Attack.

Click here to see the full gallery

Time Attack is a race against time. The goal is to finish a section of the game as quickly as possible; the faster you are, the higher your score will be. You also pick up bonus points in a number of categories (defeating enemies using super moves, for example), so it’s important to think about strategy. Where and how you use the super moves makes a big difference to your score. There are 13 different Time Attack stages, each taken from a different part of the game.

Coliseum Attack is about survival. You face ten waves of enemies at steadily increasing difficulty. The first challenge is just to finish at all! But once you’ve managed to do that, the challenge becomes to finish as quickly as possible, and to finish without taking any damage. There are three arenas you can choose from in Coliseum Attack, each with its own very different style of enemy setups.

Whichever challenge you choose, the character you choose to play as is vital. These challenges are tough, and the extra damage you can do as Massive Knack, or the all-around strength of Diamond Knack, can make the difference between ending up at the top of the leaderboards, or somewhere far below. It’s also very important to play with the proper gadgets equipped, as something like the combo meter will really cut down on the time it takes to complete these special stages.

So those are all of the unlockable features in Knack. Don’t forget to collect items while you’re on the go with Knack’s Quest, a free downloadable game for iOS and Android devices, where you can unlock gadget parts and rare Relics for use in the full Knack game on PS4.The team and I are really looking forward to seeing the scores at the top of the leaderboards once everyone has had a chance to hone their fighting skills — I’m sure they’ll be most impressive!

Here are a few highlights from the ol’ PlayStation.Blog this week:

PlayStation 4 was the biggest. Console launch. Ever. Doki-Doki Universe is out now on PS4, PS3 and Vita, Lightning Returns’ Collector’s Edition got an official unveiling, The Walking Dead Season 2 is coming soon to PS3, Naughty Dog sent along an adorable holiday card, the newest Tales game is PS3-bound, and Bit.Trip’s Runner 2 is dashing to PS Vita on Tuesday.

As for me, I’ve been tinkering around in Doki-Doki Universe. It’s adorable, and super weird. If you’ve got a PS4, PS3 or PS Vita, you’d be wise to give it a go — especially since you can check it out for free! Dear old Sid thinks he’s good at Resogun because he beat my score on Veteran, but as soon as I hit publish on this post I intend to remind him who the true master is. It’s the game that keeps on giving. And by giving, I mean perpetuating rivalries between co-workers.

What are you guys and gals playing this weekend?

  • I’m playing: Resogun, Doki-Doki Universe
  • I’m watching: Frozen, Saving Mr. Banks
  • I’m listening to: Shigeto, RX Bandits
