NEED FOR SPEED RIVALSSee more SORCERY SAGA: CURSE OF THE GREAT CURRY GOD Add-Ons
PS3 ThemesWhat a delectably delicious day it is! The roguelike RPG Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God launches today. Sorcery Saga is exclusive to PS Vita and is available at both retail and on PlayStation Store. Like the name suggests, it’s wacky, fun, and a real challenge. Today, we wanted to give all you folks an overview of the game.
So what is Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God all about?
Sorcery Saga tells the story of Pupuru and her brave quest to save her favorite curry restaurant from the big, bad curry chain that’s just moved into town. Harmless, right? Wrong! In order to do so, Pupuru and her grumpy (and always hungry) creature friend, Kuu, must travel to find ingredients to make the legendary curry. Along the way, Pupuru meets many interesting and strange people, including the rather forward Gigadis and the mysterious, non-committal Puni.
How Does This Thing Play?As Pupuru, you’ll enter a dungeon and travel on a grid-like system. Attacks are turn-based, but what makes Sorcery Saga truly challenging is its roguelike quality. Meaning, if you fall in a dungeon, you lose all your items and levels. And don’t be fooled by the awesomely cute monsters you’ll encounter (including a square tofu man or a pork bun blob) — they can pack a spicy punch.
Luckily, there are a variety of ways to avoid such a fate. You can power up by whipping together a delicious plate of curry in the dungeon, save items in “My Room,” or have Kuu help out.
It Comes with Some Satisfying SidesSorcery Saga’s artwork and its playful style make it light-hearted and fun. But to drive home the wackiness of it all, there’s a special section called “Chara-Theater” which features skits from the cast. Sized down into “chibi” (small) form, these characters showcase their comedic prowess and perform some truly hilarious skits.
Anything Else?Aksys Games wanted to create something truly special for Sorcery Saga’s Limited Edition. We also wanted to make everything in the LE fit the style of the game, so we decided to create custom spoons, bibs, and plates featuring the cast.
Never before have we seen cooking ware part of any limited edition, and we felt that this would really be fun — just like the game. For us, the question wasn’t “Why?” but rather “Why not?” We took a chance and dove right in, and as a cherry on top of the great curry cake, we decided to give it an extra long name. It’s officially known as “Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God Hot and Spicy, Everything Nicey Limited Edition.”
Sorcery Saga is out today on PS Vita.
Hello everyone — Ivent Games here to announce that Strength of the Sword 3 is out today on PS3! I know you’ve never heard of us before, so I think an introduction is in order.
We’re a tiny, indie team, comprised of just two people: me (Lyubomir Iliev) and my friend and colleague Georgi Rakidov.
For the past five years we’ve been hard at work on developing our first project: Strength of the Sword 3. It’s a downloadable, challenge-driven sword fighting game exclusive to PS3. In it, you take control of a mechanical knight sent from the heavens to battle a rising evil that has swept the land… and that’s pretty much all the story we’re going to give you. Yeah. But this isn’t a game about story. This is a game about CHALLENGE! It’s very old-school in that regard. It’s the kind of game you “beat” instead of just “finish.”
Strength of the Sword 3 has quite a different kind of combat system that combines action, strategy, and management challenges, centered on three types of resources and their offensive/defensive uses.
Mastering this system means learning to juggle these resources and finding a flow of combat that suits each situation.
Then there’s an advanced “Group AI” system that analyzes the player’s gameplay style and adapts the enemy tactics accordingly, making even the simplest of enemies an evolving challenge that will keep you on your toes… or face down in the dirt.
The combination of these two systems provides a very different and dynamic style of play that will appeal to the challenge seekers among us.
So, if you’re one of those players looking for the kind of game you “beat” instead of “finish,” we hope you pick up Strength of the Sword 3 and give it a shot. And if you do: good luck and HAVE FUN!
Check out our website and Facebook page for more screenshots, artwork, videos, and discussions about Strength of the Sword 3. We’re also going to keep posting new updates and details here on PlayStation.Blog. But in the meantime, if you have any questions for us, we’ll be right here to answer them.
See you soon. Rock on.
How might a roguelike look like if it featured a thinker and explorer, instead of a traditional warrior? If being clever was more important than being strong? That’s a design challenge we’ve attempted to tackle with Road Not Taken.
You play a ranger in a frigid, enchanted forest, trying to save lost children. You start with a few easy-to-learn abilities. You can pick up any adjacent objects, you can carry them around, and you can throw them. Trees, boulders, bears — they all float at your command. But you need to be careful; whenever you carry things, it costs you stamina. If you run out of stamina, you collapse face-first into the snow. No checkpoints, no reloads. It’s over.
In Road Not Taken, both the challenge and the exciting moments come from the setting itself. You’ll be intrigued by strange objects that you haven’t encountered before, and whose characteristics are never fully explained. There are wild creatures running about, spiky plants that hurt you if you pick them up, and blizzards that sap your strength.
There isn’t a clear way into or out of the heart of the forest, and to make matters worse, the exit to every area is blocked. It’s a chaotic and dangerous mess, and you’ll feel the intensity ratchet upwards as your stamina decreases step-by-carefully-planned step.
You unlock the exits to a section of the forest by organizing the chaos with your powers. Say, for example, that you’ve got an exit blocked by rocks, and you notice that it requires five trees to open. You look over the map and spot a bunch of trees blocked behind various rocks and creatures. Being incredibly smart, you start moving things around and eventually collect the trees together into a single, connected set. Voila! The exit rumbles open.
Organizing the chaos is trickier than it looks. You could simply lug trees into position, but you’d end up draining your energy and eventually succumb to the winter storm. And on top of that, you have to deal with all the unique creatures and objects in your way, each of which has its own unexpected ways of moving, combining, and/or draining your stamina.
In Road Not Taken, you improve mainly by learning how things work and learning to play more strategically. For example, moles burrow under things. That doesn’t seem very useful until you figure out that this lets you shift otherwise-immoveable stones around. Forest spirits hurt you if you walk into them, then they vanish. But spirits can also help you… if you learn to unlock their secrets.
And speaking of secrets: they’re everywhere. Sometimes I think of Road Not Taken as this giant treasure box of secrets. Some objects magically combine into new objects that restore your stamina or serve as powerful tools for you. Other objects seem totally useless until you discover the context that makes them helpful (What’s up with that goat, and why is he pooping all over the place?).
Behind the scenes, the objects in Road Not Taken use what’s called a component based architecture. This lets us as game developers combine behaviors in incredibly flexible ways.
To see why this is useful, it helps to understand that many games rely on object-oriented programming methods. You might have a monster class that defines general movement, hit points, etc. Then you create an archer sub-class that has all the properties of the monster, but also adds the abilities to shoot arrows. This is a great technique, but you run into some problems. Say you have an archer sub-class, and also a warrior sub-class that can use a shield. It can be tricky to then create a new creature that can both fire a missile and use a shield. You could move both those abilities back up into the base monster class, but with dozens of abilities and billions of combinations, it can get messy very quickly.
In a component-based system, the behaviors like missile and shield are completely separate. That lets the designer (That’s me!) mix and match them together. Once I have a set of a couple dozen behaviors, the limits to what I can do are mostly my imagination. Do I want a timid wolf that runs from people but eats deer and turns into a giant ghost wolf if a pack of five are collected together? I can do that with just a few lines of code!
That lets me experiment faster, so that we can build a wide variety of interesting and unique objects (and it lets me hide all sorts of secrets in the game!).
Here’s the other thing about Road Not Taken: like any good roguelike, its playfields are procedurally generated. You can’t memorize a solution. You need to learn the behaviors of each animal or object in the environment and be clever about using those in each new context. Playing Road Not Taken is more like improv jazz than repetitive practice.
You’ll fail a lot initially. The first time the dark spirits emerge and suck your warmth away, you probably won’t recover. The first time you’re forced to abandon a child because you know you can’t reach them without passing out, you probably won’t feel so great.
But eventually, with a lot of cleverness, you’ll master the forest. You’ll rescue all the children. And then you need to deal with the rest of your life, which as it turns out isn’t so easy. What does “victory” mean when you’re still coming home to a sick loved one, or a stricken friend who can’t be helped?
But that’s a blog post for another day.
Greetings once again, PlayStation.Blog! My name’s Colin, IGN’s Senior Editor. You may have seen me skulking around IGN PlayStation and making terrible predictions on Podcast Beyond, but today, I’m not here to make any pizza bets with you. No, I’m here to tell you about something exciting we’ve cooked up for PS4 owners.
IGN for PlayStation, our new app for PS4, is available today, and I’m pleased to tell you that you can download it for yourself — free of charge — when PlayStation Store updates. The app is currently exclusive to PS4, and will come to PS3 and PS Vita next year.
How does this benefit you, exactly? IGN’s PS4 app will make you more popular with your friends, give you more energy, and even make the food you eat taste better (that’s not true). But more importantly, our PS4 app will give you direct access to all of IGN’s video content, letting you create custom playlists, while finding and consuming the exact content you’re seeking.
What’s truly cool about the app, however, is how granular you can get with it. You can rapidly come in and out of full-screen view, minimize a video and let it run in the corner while you keep on browsing, and skip unwanted content with a press of R1. Whether you’re looking for a preview, a review, some help with a game, or just a totally inane conversation about nothing at all, IGN’s PS4 app is here to make your gaming life better.
So head over to PlayStation Store to download the app, and let me know what you think.
‘Til next time, my friends. Beyond!
The IGN App for PS4 can be found in the TV & Video section of PS4′s home screen, or in the App section of PlayStation Store.
Yay! Doki-Doki Universe is out today for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita on PlayStation Store. Woohoo! Sorry, got a little too excited, there. We’ll be livestreaming Doki-Doki Universe later today, so be sure to follow the official PlayStation Twitch channel — you might win a code for the full game.
To get the ultimate Doki-Doki Universe experience, you can download our Limited Edition Mega Awesome Deluxe Bundle (our LEMADB, or Limited Edition for short) starting today. This includes all launch content — the story mode, personality quizzes, and Doki Doki Mail — plus two packs, two quiz packs, and nine mail packs, and a bonus dynamic theme which is only available in this bundle. It only costs $24.99. And thanks to the cross buy support, when you purchase it once on PlayStation Store, you’ll be able to download it for free on any other available PlayStation system.
You can alternatively download the Doki-Doki Universe Starter Pack, which by the way, is free! Great for those who want to get a feel for our bizarre, yet adorable universe. There’s also, of course, the Full Game, which is $14.99, and includes the most important bit: the story mode. There are also all kinds of downloadable packs available on the store today, so you can cater your gaming experience a bit more — story packs ($1.99), quiz packs ($1.49), and deko packs ($1.99).
Before you get to downloading, I’ve put together a few insider bits of information to get you started.
In Doki-Doki, you get presents from everyone you meet. But, if they won’t give you one when you’re being nice, you can fling them in the air or pound them into the ground. You get to ride around space on a giant, flying poo. Or a slice of cheese, or a flying whale, etc… You have a therapist named Dr. Therapist on your home planet that calls you up on the phone when he has something new to tell you about yourself. Well, not your real phone. You can collect four or five hundred different things, like a T-Rex or a Duck on a teeter totter… and make them magically appear whenever you want. Everyone will react to them when you do, which is its own form of entertainment. The people you meet on each world will send you letters as you play the game. These all have fun animations in them that you can read in your Doki-Doki Mail box. Your guide, Alien Jeff, is a little bit of a jerk sometimes, but you’ll find out he’s not quite what he seems. You can tilt the world and make everybody fall down. But don’t get carried away with your power unless you don’t want people to like you very much! Super-secret tip: If you’re ever looking for some dolphins for a certain cactus, they happen to be behind an ancient temple pillar. After you’ve had a chance to play, tell us what you love (or don’t love) about it right here. We really hope you enjoy playing Doki-Doki Universe!
VooFoo has been building quite a reputation for bringing you gorgeous looking games, and today is no exception with the announcement of our latest labor of love: Pure Pool for PS4.
Over the years we’ve worked hard to create visually stunning games. From the the critically acclaimed Hustle Kings, winner of Kotaku’s ‘Best Downloadable Sports Game of the Year’ award, to the visual tour-de-force that is Pure Chess, the most realistic looking chess videogame you’ll ever play; we certainly like our games to make jaws drop here at VooFoo.
We like our pool games here at Voofoo, so when Ripstone approached us with the opportunity to develop one for Sony’s new hardware, we jumped at the chance.
Forget everything you know about pool games, because we’re taking Pure Pool to a whole other dimension! This game will bring a living, breathing, connected Pool Hall to your living room. By now, you know we enjoy pushing hardware to the limit to create photo-realistic games. Well, using the immense power of PS4, we’re working on graphical techniques that will blur your perception of what’s real and what’s a game. Sound over the top? Wait until you see this thing in action!
Check out the teaser trailer above to get a feel for the game, and rest assured: we won’t be happy until Pure Pool is not only the best pool game out there, but an essential purchase for every proud PS4 owner.
Let us know what you think in the comments!
Hey folks! How’s everyone doing this weekend?
We’ve sold a lot of PS4s, you guys have made some incredible costumes for your messengers in Tearaway, Zen Pinball 2 is coming to PS4, the fine folks from XGen Studios gave us some tips to earn a fortune in Super Motherload, and the ultra-weird Doki-Doki Universe launches on PS4, PS3 and PS Vita Tuesday.
Speaking of new releases, Gran Turismo 6 is out now! I’ve been watching the opening cinematic on loop for the past couple days now. How many cars are in your garage so far?
I finally dove into Assassin’s Creed IV on PS4, but I’m still working my way toward the Platinum on Tearaway. Between those and the absolutely massive GT6, my gaming schedule is pretty well packed for the next few weeks.
What are you playing?

PlayStation Blogcast 100
Most-Watched Video of the Week
Here we go: it’s the first month of PSN top sellers to include PlayStation 4. We’ve got two separate PS4 charts this month: one that includes the PS3 to PS4 digital upgrade program, and one that doesn’t. The games included in that program did very well either way, of course.
Aside from those, Grand Theft Auto V held on near the top of the PS3 lineup, the sublimely adorable Tearaway tore up the Vita charts, Fatal Frame I and II ruled the Classics section.
Do any of these results surprise you? Resogun is pretty far down the PS4 list, but keep in mind that one’s free for PlayStation Plus members, so its position is actually pretty impressive!
Head over to the EU PlayStation.Blog to see how your favorites fared on their side, and let us know what you think is going to shine this month!
