So it isn’t likely that you’ll recognize my name in the byline, as this is my first post for the PlayStation.Blog, but I’m a gamer much like everyone who frequents this site, and a member of the PlayStation MVP program.
A couple of weeks ago, I was presented with a chance to attend the NYC PlayStation launch event due to my involvement in the MVP program, and of course jumped at the opportunity — seriously, who wouldn’t? So on Wednesday, I traveled by train from Boston down to NYC, and what followed was honestly an experience of a lifetime.
My first night in NYC was somewhat low-key and involved meeting up with Paul Sullivan (one of the PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Managers who made my trip possible) and two other PlayStation MVPs. We checked out the venue where various PS4 games were being broadcast onto the sides of rental trucks and buildings, and stumbled upon Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, interacting with a real-time art installation that made use of The Standard, High Line Hotel.
Thursday, to borrow a phrase from Sony’s marketing, really was the “Perfect Day.” Sony had a mini-E3 set up in the Bier Garten venue that would later transform into the set for Spike TV’s PS4: All Access launch special. This was my first time experiencing PS4 in person, and the gameplay and graphics looked stunning for every game they had on display. I particularly loved getting the opportunity to play the various unreleased games, such as Thief and Octodad.
At around 4:00 PM, the other two MVPs and I were given complimentary PS4s, an array of games, and other gear to take back to our hotel and play. Before heading back, we got to meet Shuhei Yoshida and Adam Boyes and had them sign our consoles. Then, once back at the hotel, I fired up the PS4, and — after a short mesmerization with the new user interface — I quickly jumped into Resogun. I followed that up with Knack, tried out the social features using the Share button, and spent the next few hours entirely immersed in gameplay.
Later that night, I headed over to Spike TV’s PS4: All Access launch event with the other two MVPs and our PS4s. We were fortunate enough to watch the live broadcast from the media pit, and while the announcements were great and I particularly can’t wait to get my hands on Destiny, the highlight of my night was meeting Guy Longworth, Jack Tretton, and Andrew House, and getting them to sign my PS4.
After midnight arrived, it was back to the hotel to pack everything up in preparation for the journey home. While I very much enjoyed NYC, I ended up catching an early train back to Boston, because three fewer hours spent in Penn Station meant three more with my console at home.
In the end, I got more out of this trip than I ever expected. It was great meeting some of my fellow PlayStation gamers, such as the two PlayStation MVPs who I got to share the experience with, and the many others willing to wait it out to be among the first to buy PS4 at launch. It was also great to see how passionate everyone at PlayStation is about what they do — not just their jobs and how the products they make influence others, but the games as well, because at their core they’re gamers too.
I realize that my PS4 launch experience is about as glitzy as they get, but a couple of weeks ago I was planning on staring down a clock and waiting for an Amazon shipment to arrive, so I would love for you to share your launch experiences in the comments, below.
Hi! It’s Simon from Spearhead Games, here again to talk about our upcoming PS4 co-op puzzler Tiny Brains. We finished our very last updates earlier this week, and we’re finally done — it feels so weird to write that after Tiny Brains consumed my entire life for more than a year, but it’s true. The whole team is incredibly proud to be bringing Tiny Brains to PS4 on December 3rd. Thanks to PlayStation’s support of indies, we were given the option to be featured on PlayStation Plus for the launch — it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up!
So look out for Tiny Brains soon, and in the meantime, I wanted to share our brand new launch trailer, and tell you a bit about how we’re trying to get you back in the living room for some old school co-op with a next-gen twist.
When I was a kid, one of the best feelings in the world was getting a new game and rushing home to call my friends to come over and play. Crowded together in front of the screen, all excited to game late into the night; elbowing for room on the couch, gloating and swapping tips — these things are what gave me a lifelong love of video games.
The launch of the PS4 marks the beginning of an exciting time for gaming, with new technology letting us play with more people, more often. It hearkens back to those “good old days” when you had new technology to show friends, and everyone wanted to come to your house to play. We’re incredibly happy that our first game, Tiny Brains, is a part of that. With it, I feel that we’re bridging the old and the new of multiplayer, co-operative gaming.
Let me take a few steps back. I’m Simon Darveau, formerly at Ubisoft and now co-founder at Spearhead Games. Tiny Brains is a quirky, social, cooperative, action puzzler. Beyond that, it’s our baby — the game many of us left our jobs at AAA studios to make. It’s a game that’s been in our heads for a long time, all the way back from when one of my co-founders Malik and I were just kids playing games together.
We both made it into the industry and eventually decided we couldn’t make the innovative types of games we wanted to make while at big companies. The process began with me sleeping on Malik’s couch (where I was nick-named his house cat), playing games together every night, and thinking about what we could do to make the ultimate social, cooperative gaming experience — something where we had to work together toward one goal rather than try to kill each other on the same screen.
Fast-forward a year and a few months, and Tiny Brains has become a reality, coming out on the most cutting-edge gaming console of the new generation!
Tiny Brains is everything that the team originally wanted from a co-op game. It follows four tiny lab animals — a rabbit, a mouse, a hamster, and a bat — each of whom has been so extensively experimented on as to develop cool psychic abilities. The bat can channel his voice to force-push objects away from him; the rabbit uses an electric charge generated by his huge floppy ears to pull objects towards him. The hamster can create a solid chunk of ice out of thin air, and the mouse can swap his position with that of another object at will.
Each of these powers is useful, but no one power can solve the puzzles alone. In order to progress through the mad scientist’s diabolical laboratory, all four critters must work together. This means a lot of shouting, a lot of communication, a lot of chaos, and a hell of a lot of fun.
Of course, you don’t have to have three friends and four controllers to get in on the action. With the power of PS4, an indie like Tiny Brains can still feature online drop-in/drop-out multiplayer, and even a single-player mode in which the levels adapt to become solvable by one player. But to experience the game at its best, we highly encourage you to rally your friends, hop on the couch, and dive in together. We think you’ll like the way this old school gaming-inspired indie leverages the capabilities of the PS4.
I’m stoked for the launch of Tiny Brains, and can’t wait to see if anyone can beat our developer high scores in the challenge modes. Have you been practicing your multiplayer skills? What PS4 game have you been playing the most with friends at home or online?

Stuff We Talked About[Editor’s note: PSN game release dates are subject to change without notice. Game details are gathered from press releases from their individual publishers and/or ESRB rating descriptions.]
Hi, I’m Maciej Jamrozik, the Lead Technical Artist at Techland, developer of the upcoming first-person, action survival-horror game Dying Light.
Light and shadow play a crucial role in Dying Light. They affect not only the gameplay and its day-and-night cycle, but also the visuals.
This video illustrates how the game uses a physically-based lighting system, which means that light is generated in accordance to the actual laws of physics. This in turn assures that lighting looks convincing and cohesive, regardless of the conditions and surroundings. It’s especially important as Dying Light features a variety of locations and environments, from open spaces to claustrophobic rooms, as well as a range of weather conditions and changing time of day.
One of the most important parameters of indirect lighting is “roughness,” which defines the level of smoothness and dullness of a surface. Implementing our new physics model eliminated the limitation of using only preset groups of materials, which translates to much more varied and faithful representations of materials in the game. Our artists now have full freedom over the level of roughness on objects, and can save the result in a form of texture.
On PS4, we use the console’s additional horsepower to generate dynamic reflections. Similarly, they make use of the “roughness” to diffuse and reduce the impact of the specular reflection. It helps render the given material in the most realistic way possible.
Dying Light boasts a dynamic weather system, together with a real-time passage of time. That’s why indirect lighting data, which is stored in so called environment light probes, has to change according to the current weather and the time of day. These two factors can change independently. That’s why we compute the Spherical Harmonix function offline for all weather conditions and times of day, and then it is dynamically interpolated in the game.
The physically based lighting model influenced what all wet surfaces look like. When it’s raining, wet surfaces get increasingly shiny through the modification of the roughness parameter. We emphasize that weather conditions, like time of day, change gradually, and it applies also to all wet surfaces. As a result, a surface becomes wet only if it is actually exposed to rain.
Another field directly improved by the new physics model is water. It’s a crucial feature, since Dying Light allows the player to swim and dive. Water in the game can have varied levels of transparency, which affects light diffusion. Moreover, water has an effect on all objects immersed in it. We modify the parameter of roughness so that they look wet, but only to the point of immersion. The rest above the water level remains dry.
All the above improvements, and many other changes, are to make sure that Dying Light will deliver an unprecedented visual fidelity that will surprise you with its level of realism. Next year, when you’re leaping between roofs and trying to lose the zombie horde behind you, take a moment to appreciate all the great lighting effects around you.
Just don’t stop for too long — zombie bites hurt!

Hey, everyone! It’s Derek once again. First off, thank you for your tremendous support of Spelunky on PS3 and PS Vita. You’ve made it clear that it was the right choice bringing the game to PlayStation! We’re really happy about how the game has been received (generally with much glee, followed by screams of anguish, followed by more glee).
But I’m really here to talk about our first update, which is out now. Of course, every game launches with some number of bugs, and Blitworks has been working hard to fix as many of those as possible. The slowdown in certain areas of the game was probably the biggest issue, and that’s been addressed. They also fixed a bug that was preventing certain Trophies from being earned.
Also, if you’ve been watching streams of people playing Spelunky on PC, you may have noticed that that version of the game has a unique feature called the Daily Challenge, where each day a set of levels is generated that has the same seed for everyone playing it. If you get a high score on the Daily Challenge, you can really attribute it to your skill and knowledge of the game, rather than the luck of the draw (i.e. serious bragging rights).
On top of that, you only get one chance to play the Daily — if you die, you gotta wait until the next day to try again! So yeah, somehow we managed to crank up the tension of playing Spelunky even higher… and PC players seem to really like it!
When Blit heard about this new mode, they couldn’t wait to implement it on PSN. That’s one of the great things about working with them — they love their work and relish the technical challenges of doing an awesome port. It’s right in line with the spirit of Spelunky and the spirit of the Daily, which, as you may have guessed, you can now play on PSN as part of this update.
So enjoy the Daily Challenge. Enjoy the bug fixes and optimizations. Enjoy life. (Enjoy death, too.) Just enjoy.
(And special thanks to Doug Wilson and Zach Gage. They gave us the idea for the Daily Challenge in the first place and have been great friends and supporters for a long time. You guys are the best.)

Later today, the next system software update for PlayStation 4 (version 1.51) will be available. With this minor required update, stability of system software has been improved.
