Set after the events of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker but before those of the upcoming MGS5: The Phantom Pain, MGS5: Ground Zeroes gives the player total control over how, where, and when to execute espionage-focused operations. Playing as Snake, aka Big Boss, players will sneak into enemy encampments, stalk targets, interrogate enemy agents, and recover secret intel while piecing together the game’s story mission by mission. The result is an open, fluid adventure that will play out a little differently each time.
On PS4, Kojima’s proprietary FOX Engine coats the game in a convincing layer of next-gen grit. Eerily lifelike character animations bring new punch to the game’s CQC, while a new global lighting system means that day and night pass realistically, complete with changes to guard behavior and visibility. FOX Engine brings a host of other benefits, including an upgraded weapon physics system that accounts for bullet drop. This will be a profound change for fans of the tranquilizer gun and other low-powered projectile weapons, which now require far more finesse to use at extreme distances.
Just before PS4’s North American release on November 15th, I spoke with game director Hideo Kojima to learn more about Ground Zeroes and his plans for PlayStation’s next-generation console. Also, be sure to catch the new gameplay video that shows off 12 minutes of PS4 footage.
PSB: We’re seeing a different approach to cinematics and storytelling. Have you re-evaluated your approach?
Kojima: It’s going to be freer, more open, and we want to player to create their own strategies as they infiltrate, and also create their own stories as they try to get out. It’s very different from a linear game, where you go from place to place and cutscenes are triggered.
Within a mission you can do whatever you want, freely. There are a lot of interactive elements, there’s scattered information within each mission, and if you put all of these elements together, and from there the player will put a story together. That’s the way I’ve intended to tell it this time.
PSB: It definitely looks more emergent. How do you see Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain working together? Why make them two different experiences?
Kojima: To release them together would be an ideal case for us. But Metal Gear Solid 5 is going to be a huge, a massive scale game. So the development is taking some time. That said, PS4 is launching now and it’s big. A lot of people have been asking for a new Metal Gear Solid experience, so we at least wanted to release a prologue so that people get to know what people will be, experience a chunk of the story. So that guided our decision to move forward at this time.
PSB: What do you think of DualShock 4? Are you exploring any concepts for use with the light bar, the motion sensor, the touch pad…?
Kojima: We are trying to take advantage of as many things as we can, but we also want to focus on keeping the experience as close as possible on both platforms, between PS3 and PS4. More than that, I would recommend that people who are looking forward to the next generation having a tablet next to them, taking advantage of those capabilities. I think there are things that people will enjoy there.
PSB: What do you think of Remote Play and PS4? Are you thinking about supporting it?
Kojima: We’re still trying to put together how much we can fit into the next game. We’re running tests, and Remote Play is impressive and I like it. So we’re running tests and still working on the game.
PSB: From a hardware perspective, are you pleased with PS4? Is it easy to tap into the system’s power?
Kojima: We used to run into some difficulties from PS3 that made us push it to a new level. Now we’re focusing on a multi-platform approach so we’re working on PCs. PS4 has fantastic specs that make it really easy to the transition from high-spec PCs to PS4. We expect that we will have very good results with PS4.
Also, I’m a huge fan of the analog sticks on PS4. That is structurally, the way they feel, the way the player uses them. I have more in mind for the analog sticks, and I think it will play very well. That is a huge advantage for PS4, the DualShock 4.
So for example, we have a guy [at Kojima Productions] who specializes on DualShock 4 and what we can do with it. So for the motions that are unique to DualShock 4, you will get something that is very detailed and varied.
PSB: What are you most proud of in Ground Zeroes? Something big, something small…?
Kojima: One thing is the searchlights. There are a lot of searchlights in this game. We were able to accurately describe, in a physical way, the way the shadows and lights interact. Twenty six years ago, I wanted to originally put this in the game: moving through searchlights without being spotted. We were finally able to put it in the game.
And also, since it’s an open-world game, there are all these different vehicles, different weapons, you can use turrets…as a player, you’re constantly tempted to use them. However, you’ll be spotted by the enemy as soon as you use them, you’ll be in trouble. So we give this choice to the player: you can use the turrets, the explosions, but they shouldn’t. So I’m happy to have this in the game.
PSB: With launch upon us, are you interested in any other PS4 games?
Kojima: Well, I’m always excited by the games that will only be available on PS4. Graphically, I’d like to see what Killzone Shadow Fall can do. And I’m very excited for Knack, I want to play it with Mark Cerny.
Appy Entertainment is excited to bring our award-winning physics puzzler, Trucks & Skulls, to Playstation Mobile later on today. This is a subtle game that invites you to explore your feelings and pick pretty flowers, a game that firmly positions itself at the center of the games-as-art debate, a game that…
Oh, wait. It’s not that at all. Trucks & Skulls is the game where you SMASH NITRO-BURNING MONSTER TRUCKS INTO PILES OF LAUGHING SKULLS.
We made Trucks & Skulls because we wanted to blow stuff up. It really was that simple. We felt the physics-puzzler genre could use a good boot to the backside with a game full of things that explode, so we created the loudest, most obnoxious, most explosive game possible. Trucks & Skulls is a fuel-soaked, heavy metal ball of boom. Playing our game is guaranteed to raise your blood pressure, and lower your IQ.
The physics model used by the game is quite sophisticated, but you should check your sophistication at the door — this really is an angry and exuberant game that doesn’t take itself seriously. There’s no hidden meaning. Trucks are good, Skulls are bad. Destroy Skulls!
We’re pumped up to see this game made available for PlayStation’s audience — and we’ve added levels unique to this version of the game, along with special truck skins for our new players, and there are even some extra advantages you can purchase with the currency you earn inside the game — but really, this is a game all about hitting things, and hitting them hard. You can reach out to us on Twitter.
Have at it! And remember… destroy Skulls!
The last video in our little Tearaway miniseries is all about us: Media Molecule, the studio behind Tearaway and our first game LittleBigPlanet.
The video focuses on how we work, and how we assure everyone’s ideas are counted. Mm is an interesting place, a rather chaotic place where the term ‘herding cats’ gets thrown around a lot, but where somehow the chaos is channeled into communal creativity and the games we love to make. We love to inspire creativity in people, and we love to create our own unique games that we think will give people experiences unlike any they’ve had before.
Tearaway is out this Friday, November 22nd and we hope it will provide players with exactly that – a new game experience unlike any other – we’ll let you be the judge!
We hope you enjoy this last video in the series– remember to pre-order Tearaway to secure the cool pre-order bonus items. Week one orders at the PS Store will also include the bonus items, so those who prefer the digital version will not miss out!
Tearaway launches on Friday (yay!), so take a good look at the trailer above to get ready for the big day!
Wow! It has been a great week here at Zoink: years of sketching, painting, story writing, puzzle coding and voice-acting have come to an end, and this week you can all Stick It to The Man on your PS3. And it actually looks like we did something right. Reviews are popping up all over the place and it’s looking good, actually amazingly awesome! Mostly 9 out of 10! Check out this review from Official PlayStation Magazine.
Besides floating around on pink clouds with goofy smiles on our faces, we even managed to throw a brand-spanking new gameplay trailer together. Check it out – it’ll be much easier than me trying to explain the game to you. We internally call it the Crazy Trailer. It‘s just crazily overloaded with stuff; we had a really hard time choosing what should go in, so we just packed it pretty full with a bit of everything!
You can preorder the game now, or wait until PlayStation Store updates tomorrow to buy it. It’s cross-buy, so when the PS Vita version is released in December you’ll get that too! For updates check out the website or head to the Facebook page, where we’ll be giving away game codes in the coming weeks.
With the launch of Super Motherload and PS4 today, we count ourselves lucky to be among the small number of indie games available at launch, helping to make good on Sony’s promise to support innovation from small teams. What we don’t push in polygons, we hope to make up in truly social gameplay experiences that keep drawing you back. For the next puzzle, the next Special Upgrade, and of course your next grudge-match against pals.
One unique PS4 feature we didn’t have space to mention in our last post is Super Motherload’s use of the Activity Feed. As certain events unfold in Super Motherload, such as the untimely and permanent death of your hard-won upgraded character at the hands of fuel depletion in Hardcore mode, the activity feed will broadcast notification of your controller-hurtling rage to your friends on PSN. Other, more celebratory activity feed posts include the acquisition of Special Abilities and Character Unlocks.
There has also been quite a bit of interest in the soundtrack for Super Motherload since our last post. We’re pleased to announce that we’ve decided to stream the entire soundtrack on YouTube for free (with digital download & a vinyl edition also forthcoming). You can check out the entire soundtrack here.
Super Motherload’s soundtrack is an electronic score written by Eric Cheng, inspired by sci-fi / horror movie themes and synth-pop hooks. Eric is an Edmonton-based producer who has worked with artists like Mac DeMarco, Coeur de Pirate, and Michael Rault. He’s a member of electronic pop artist Born Gold’s touring band, and also toured with Grimes in early 2012 during her North American Visions tour.
We hope you’ll make Super Motherload one of your titles on Launch Day!
Today PlayStation 4 launches; you might say that “next gen” has officially become “current gen”! Game creators have been hard at work, and I think game players have a lot to look forward to.
One of the launch titles is of course Knack, the game that I and the internal Japan Studio have been hard at work on for the last three and a half years. I love character action games, and over the years I’ve helped create a number of them, including Crash Bandicoot on the original PlayStation, and Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank on PS2.
Our goal on this project was to bring back that kind of classic gameplay, but with a next-gen twist. Knack has the ability to pick up pieces of the environment and grow larger, so over the course of a level he can grow from a three foot tall “mascot” type character to a thirty foot tall rampaging monster. This is a kind of gameplay I’d never tried to create before, it gives a very unique feel from the game. We’ve also focused on the narrative that drives the action – there is a full CGI film worth of story embedded in the game.
We’ve kept two types of players in mind while creating Knack. One is hardcore players who like the old school challenge present in Crash Bandicoot and the like – those were tough games, and even on a Normal difficulty setting Knack will definitely keep you on your toes.
The other type of player we had in mind was light or beginner players. As lead system architect for PlayStation 4 I knew there that the launch lineup would include Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, Killzone Shadow Fall, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4 and other amazing AAA titles for the core gamer, but I wanted to be sure there would be something for the rest of the family – sons, daughters, spouses and the like. So on an Easy difficulty setting, Knack is a game that pretty much anyone can play. It can even be someone’s very first video game ever!
We’ve also added in style of local co-op play where an experienced gamer can help that beginner get up to speed – just pick up a second controller and play as Robo Knack. You can fight side by side with Knack, clear out enemies together, and if you build your strength far enough you can even heal Knack when he gets into trouble.
Another goal we had with Knack was to bring connected gaming to the character action genre. Scattered throughout the game are secret rooms with treasure chests – these hold parts of gadgets that can help Knack in his quest, as well as rare crystal relics. As you find these rooms and open the chests, you’ll be able to see items your friends have found there as well, and choose which item you want as your reward. As a result, the more friends you have playing the game, the faster Knack can gain his special abilities!
We’ve also worked to push the boundaries of play past the living room – we created Knack’s Quest, a free “match 3” puzzle game for iOS. An Android version will be coming soon. By playing this game on your smartphone or tablet, you can pick up these same gadget parts and crystal relics, and send them over via your PSN account for Knack to use in the PS4 title. You can work on unlocking items when you’re away from the console, or even enlist the help of someone else to do it for you.
That’s all for now! You can pick up Knack at your local retailer, or buy the digital version right from your PS4. We’ve been counting down the days until PS4 launches and the gaming world can see what we’ve been working on – really hope you enjoy it!

To celebrate the official release of RESOGUN and PS4 in North America, I am delighted to to share yet more details about the game, from the team at Housemarque, and of course, some more great explosions!
I know a lot of readers skip right ahead to the videos, but I am going to start with a piece of concept art, depicting a whole bunch of initial enemy designs.
A few of these may not have made the cut for the final game but most of them lie in wait for you to blast them to pieces.
Did I mention blasting? Ok, it’s definitely time for some explosions then and the most epic RESOGUN video yet!
The best thing about RESOGUN of course is that the gameplay is just as epic as the explosions and so the last video I will share here today is all about the gameplay.
RESOGUN has lots of subtle tricks to master in order to achieve the best score possible and as you can see in the video, it’s possible to play with a lot of style that is sure to amaze people watching over your shoulder.
RESOGUN is a truly mesmerizing experience but I want to keep this update short and sweet, leaving you with more time to play the game.
Thank you for reading and watching — we look forward to seeing you on the leaderboards soon.
We will reveal some expert gameplay tips to coincide with the European launch at the end of November, so check back in a couple weeks for these, and please check us out on Facebook.
Today is a historic day for PlayStation — and gamers everywhere — as we usher in a new era of gaming with the North American launch of PlayStation 4. We have poured an incredible amount of power and innovation into PS4 to bring you the most immersive, jaw-dropping gaming and entertainment experiences imaginable. Now you get to see for yourself why PlayStation is the best place to play.
This past week we celebrated the launch of PS4 with bi-coastal events taking place in New York City and San Francisco. I can’t imagine a better way to introduce a new platform into the growing world of PlayStation than being in two of the biggest cities in the U.S. and live streaming all of the action to you.
Since we introduced PlayStation 4 earlier this year, feedback from the gaming community has been phenomenal. With media reviews saying that the PS4 is “just shy of perfection” and that it is “an impressive package for gamers,” it’s clear that PS4′s horsepower, deep social capabilities, network features, and amazing gameplay have struck a chord. With 23 launch titles, including Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, and Resogun, you have no shortage of games that enable you to fully explore PS4′s capabilities and the expansive worlds being created by the industry’s best developers.
True to our heritage, PlayStation 4 also delivers all of your favorite digital entertainment. We have thirteen digital entertainment apps available today in the U.S., including Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Music Unlimited, NBA Game Time, Netflix, and NHL GameCenter Live. With PS4, you have the best games, movies, TV shows, and sports at your fingertips.
Of course, the PS4 journey has just begun. There are more than 180 games in development, including Destiny and inFAMOUS Second Son, and we have many more surprises to announce soon. In fact, we gave you a sneak peek of things to come last night with the announcement that the amazing team at Naughty Dog is bringing a new Uncharted game to PS4.
Thank you, PlayStation Nation, for your passion and continued support. You’re the reason we continue to innovate, explore new entertainment possibilities, and push the boundaries of play.
What’s up, PlayStation Nation? Heard any good news lately?
Everyone here at Bungie is thrilled to help ring in the next generation of gaming, and to celebrate the launch of the PlayStation 4. Though we couldn’t bring the entire studio to the launch event in NYC, we thought it was only right to deliver a little taste of in-engine footage. Check it out!
We also announced that the Destiny Beta will be available first on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3. To reserve your seat, pre-order the game at select retailers.
Hope you had a great launch night! See you in the Beta in 2014!
Hello PlayStation! My name’s Matt, I’m a Canadian indie game developer living in Vancouver. I live in a house full of indie developers that we like to call IndieHouse. I’ve spent the last year and a half of my life making a game called TowerFall Ascension, and it’s finally (almost) done. It’s been a wonderful, terrifying, and rewarding process.
For the uninitiated, TowerFall is a local multiplayer combat game about using archery to destroy your friends. It’s fast-paced, intense, and strategic, with nuanced controls, one-hit kills, and limited ammo. It’s very simple to learn and almost anyone can play, but if you spend more time with it you’ll find many layers of hidden depth waiting to be discovered.
From the moment I had four players jumping around on screen, I knew TowerFall was a game about bringing people together. From childhood all through high school and university, I had a lot of meaningful experiences with local multiplayer. I’ve always felt an affinity for difficult games that allow me to master a finely-tuned system of mechanics, but local multiplayer adds another dimension.
With the right opponents, a deep multiplayer game allows you to test, teach, and taunt each other. You can explore the game’s world and systems together and challenge each other to improve, all while having some laughs. A good local multiplayer game lets you treat a new friend like a sister or brother.
This is the core goal of TowerFall, and it’s why creating this game has been so incredibly rewarding for me. Showing it at events like EVO and PAX, I felt privileged to observe players connecting with the game and one another. This extends beyond the four people holding controllers — along the way, I discovered that I could design TowerFall for spectators as well, to draw in the surrounding crowd.
At PAX I held a tournament, and the turnout was several times my expectations. We even got in trouble for blocking foot traffic to nearby booths! When the dust settled and a victor was crowned, I challenged him to one final showdown — world champion vs. creator.
It was the most intense match I’ve ever played, not least because of the huge crowd behind us gasping and cheering along with every dodge and kill. I felt the act of playing the game become a kind of performance art, and began to choose strategies that would elicit a stronger reaction from the crowd. At this moment I knew that TowerFall was a personal success.
In the end I lost the match by a single point. As the community grows, I doubt I’ll ever again come so close to defeating the world’s best TowerFall players. But I’ll always enjoy taking part in the excitement.
The new unlockable Purple Archer
The best part for me has been hearing tales of riotous TowerFall parties directly from players. If you speak to Adam Boyes, you may even hear stories of TowerFall-induced noise complaints from his office at PlayStation.
And now with TowerFall Ascension, my team and I have the freedom to finally fulfill our complete vision for the game. There’s a crazy amount of new content: 50 new versus levels, 4 more playable archers, an all-new, twelve-player cooperative Quest mode, 6 additional power-ups, and more. We’ve even gone back and refined everything in the original release. It feels like a whole new game. I’m incredibly excited to expand the TowerFall community to PS4, and to hear all your battle stories.
If you have any questions, I’d love to answer them, just leave a comment!
It won’t be long now! PS4 is is just hours from making its grand debut and lines are filling up at retailers nationwide. Meanwhile, the PlayStation team is holed up at The Standard, High Line, a luxury hotel in downtown New York City in preparation for one of the most dynamic launch events in gaming history (and psst: You’re invited!). Take a behind-the-scenes look at the week’s buildup, including a dazzling interactive light show and live PS4 gameplay projected on surrounding buildings. If you’re in the NYC area, this is one console launch you won’t want to miss. And yep, we’ve even got a special order of PS4s on sale just for you.
In other launch-related news, I had a chance to speak with Sony Computer Entertainment President and CEO Jack Tretton about PS4′s unique place in PlayStation history.
