The art of parkour already has ample thrills for any athlete. You certainly don’t need hordes of snarling ghouls nipping at your heels to make it any more exhilarating, but Dying Light blends the two together in a huge world devastated by the undead apocalypse. Designed by the same team that brought Dead Island to the gaming masses, Dying Light is a first-person survival game. It boasts a new combat system and tremendous player freedom in complex environments. It also, as you might expect, includes lots and lots of infected (and ways to kill them, too).
The developers at Techland brought Dying Light to the PS4 launch event here in New York City this week, demonstrating the broad array of tactical options players have to approach any situation in game. Both combat and movement are essential components to the experience — running away from danger is just about as much fun as running straight into it.
Dying Light is set inside the wrecked and ruined city of Harran, a fictional locale with an ancient history. Game Designer Maciej Binkowski likens it to Istanbul, Turkey, as he boots up Dying Light on PS4, passing me the DualShock 4 with an eager smile. There’s a dark beauty to Harran, with buildings that rise and fall like waves, and roads caked with bodies and abandoned cars.
Players can explore huge sections of Harran from a first-person perspective — running, ducking, weaving, and jumping through the debris to find supplies and complete missions. The demo opens in a small street clearing, and Binkowski coaches me through the basics before I sprint towards a supply package that’s just been dropped into Harran’s quarantined limits. I’m warned that these supplies are rare, so other survivors will hungrily hunt them with just as much tenacity.
A scream pulls my attention away from the supply drop and over to an apartment a few stories up. Dying Light presents players with a number of optional events they can chase or ignore, dependant entirely on their preference. I run towards a nearby wall, leap up and over, and climb up to a ledge that gives access to the apartment. Peering inside, I see an infected pounding a closet, its moans mingled with the terrified pleas of the survivor inside.
For the sake of the demonstration, my character has been gifted with a few weapons to dispatch such obstacles, including a hatchet and several hammers of various size. I pull out the hatchet and creep up behind the infected, burying the blade atop its head with a satisfying crunch.
Opening the closet door, the survivor thanks me, then hands over a few items to repay the kindness. Binkowski urges me on, and invites me to try other weapons against the infected wandering the streets below.
Every weapon in Dying Light has a charge attack, and these differing attacks open up plenty of ways to navigate through combat. The larger hammer, for example, can be pulled back and swung in a massive arc which sends the unfortunate infected hit flying backwards. Critical impacts are noted by “x-ray” highlights, which reveal broken bones and splintered skulls caused by successful blows.
Turning a corner around a small house, I stumble upon an infected wearing what appears to be a hazmat suit. Binkowski chuckles, noting that I should try attacking the tank strapped to its back. I leap over a fence and circle around, coming up behind it and denting it with the hammer. Backing up, the infected’s suit ruptures in a rather delightful, hissing explosion. I can’t locate the remains.
Binkowski restarts the demo and takes control, rushing through the city with practiced expertise before making it up to an overpass choked with the undead. A group of human survivors guard the passage, so Binkowski lures them towards the edge and tosses them over. We watch as the body tumbles down to the ground below.
The demo promptly closes with the arrival of a Demolisher — a hulking mass of flesh and muscle. It hurls a wrecked car at Binkowski’s character before the screen cuts to black.
Dying Light is coming to PS4 in 2014. It features four-player cooperative play, voice control (for shouting at infected to distract them), and witty uses of DualShock 4′s light bar and motion sensor — like tilting the controller to the side to check your in-game watch.
Binkowski concludes our meeting with a reminder that the Share button is a huge boon for a sandbox game like Dying Light. Because when you detonate a gas canister and send huge groups of infected flying, well, that’s the kind of moment you just need to share with the internet.
I’m here today on behalf of Housemarque and XDEV Studio Europe to squeeze in one more update before the official Resogun and PS4 launch on Friday. How time flies!
Every PlayStation console has delivered great shoot-em-ups, and I can’t think of anyone better qualified than the team at Housemarque to continue this tradition on PS4. Coming from the creators of the critically acclaimed Super Stardust games for PS3 and PS Vita, Resogun is a pure arcade action game with addictive and challenging play, mesmerizing special effects, co-op multiplayer, and the biggest explosions ever.
In response to requests that we’ve read in various forums online, the video above shows more gameplay from each of the game worlds that Mikael from Housemarque covered in the previous update.
If you watched the movie carefully, you’ll see that it featured three different ships.
Cunningly, each ship in Resogun has different strengths and weaknesses that suit different play styles, so you’ll need to try them all out to discover what suits you the best.
The Ferox is balanced in all areas, making it the easiest ship to start playing with. Nemesis is the most agile ship, making it perfect for flashy and acrobatic boost kills. Phobos is the least agile, but has the most powerful overdrive beam, making it the perfect choice for filling the screen with special effects that PS3 can only dream of.
All of the ships really come into their own in the co-op multiplayer mode where you can use different combinations of ships to play with a lot of style. And because each ship leads you to play Resogun differently, there are Trophies for completing the game with each ship, and some of the other Trophies will be somewhat easier to unlock with a particular ship than others.
Resogun will be one of the first games featured on PlayStation Plus at the launch of PS4, meaning that it’s available for free to all subscribers during the offer period. If you’re not a subscriber, Resogun will also available to purchase on PlayStation Store for just $14.99.
Be sure to set yourself a reminder to check back here on Friday for the launch blog because the guys at Housemarque have some really epic final videos to share.
Thanks to everyone whom I have had the pleasure of working with to help make this great game.
Tearaway is out in just over a week and we can’t wait for you to play it! To get you even more excited, take a little peek at the third video in our series looking at all the bits and bobs that make Tearaway the unique and special thing that it is. This one will tell you all about the splendid sounds and music we made especially for the game, including a completely bespoke original score.
This very special soundtrack is inspired by all sorts of folklore and legends, and even features snippets of some sea shanties our Head of Audio Kenny Young wrote for the game, one of which made it into our Sogport trailer back in January.
As if Kenny wasn’t talented enough he also plays a mean fiddle. Check out these two clips of him performing different versions of the traditional fiddle tune Soldier’s Joy (one the Scottish version, the other an Old-Timey Appalachian version) – this idea of a piece of music existing in different cultures and evolving over time is just one of the folk music inspirations that has worked its way into the Tearaway soundtrack.
If that doesn’t make you want to ride a pig through a beautiful paper world we don’t know what will.
You can get your hands on the Tearaway Original Soundtrack first with the Special Delivery Pre-Order Pack available both at your favorite retailer and on the PS Store for a limited time – so if you like what you hear, head over to the store and pre-order before Tearaway comes out on November 22nd!
We know you’re excited to get your hands on the PlayStation 4. We’re just as excited to show off what’s new when it comes to the Video Unlimited service and Music Unlimited service.

Here’s a synopsis of the show: Re-election battles, looming indictments, parties, their Party … these senators need a drink. And a new housemate. Alpha House, starring John Goodman and written by Academy Award nominee and Pulitzer Prize winner Garry Trudeau, is a comedy about four misfit senators who rent a house together in Washington DC. The roomies are joined by Cynthia Nixon (Sex and the City), Amy Sedaris (Strangers with Candy), Wanda Sykes (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and Julie White (Go On), who share in the outrageous—and sometimes all-too-real—follies of Washington politics.

This same experience will also be available to owners of PlayStation 4 when it becomes available on November 15. “The Wrong Mans” is an action-comedy about two lowly office workers who are dragged into a conspiracy of murder, kidnapping and mayhem. Hello folks!
I’m excited to say that the multiple award-winning Velocity Ultra is available today on the mighty PlayStation 3 for just $7.49!
At full 1080p 60fps, it’s a hypnotic experience playing on a big TV, and gives the awesome soundtrack produced by Joris de Man of Killzone fame a chance to shine too!
Developed and published by the talented team at Curve Studios, Velocity Ultra on PS3 is a perfect conversion that feels great on DualShock 3.
Me confirming that the PS3 version is indeed awesome.
What, you’ve never heard of it?Those of you not familiar with Velocity Ultra should know that it combines shoot ‘em-up action, speed runs and cunning spatial puzzles in a way never seen before, and this combination of clever mechanics and no nonsense fun delighted pretty much everyone that came into contact with it on PS Vita.
So we’re incredibly excited that Velocity Ultra is now a full PS3 title which includes perhaps (actually, definitely) the best titled platinum trophy ever: ‘Show Thumb Respect.’
Teleporting ahead…With a host of 9/10 review scores from the likes of Edge Magazine and Pocket Gamer, Velocity has been our breakthrough success, allowing us to continue working with Sony on a range of PS Vita games, and now we’re making a sequel to Velocity Ultra on PS4 and PS Vita called Velocity 2X due out next year!
Until then, you’ll need to get some practice in with Velocity Ultra — enjoy!
Today’s launch of the Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition represents the non-stop efforts of a huge group of talented developers who have been hard at work since Injustice hit store shelves. We had two lofty goals: support our fans with more additional content than any other fighting game, and make this Ultimate Edition package available on the same day for all PlayStation fans — regardless of their favorite platform.
Players can experience Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition on PS3 and PS Vita. And for everyone lucky enough to get a PS4 on launch day, they can experience the game running at 60 frames per second in native 1080p!
In addition to the awesome PS4 architecture that allowed us to go with 1080p at 60 FPS, the new features of the hardware fit Injustice perfectly, and even allowed us to add support for wish-list features like video sharing in a more seamless way than we ever thought possible. The first time we pushed the “share” button on a PS4 controller and saw how streaming gameplay to the web just worked, we knew this technology had the ability to offer every player the same awesome tournament experiences that currently requires dedicated devices and complicated setups. I can’t wait to watch the first streaming tournament of a group of friends who have suddenly been empowered with the sort of tools that only professional gamers previously had access to.
And thanks to the awesome PS4 upgrade program, gamers who don’t yet have a PS4 but who want Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition can get the content-packed PS3 version now, and when they’re ready, can upgrade to the PS4 version for just about ten bucks.
And on PS Vita, Injustice: Gods Among Ultimate Edition will be the first time players can enjoy the console version of the game on-the-go. Even after realizing how powerful the machine was when we worked on Mortal Kombat, we were worried that the giant, multi-tiered environments and constant world destruction would be impossible at 60 FPS on a portable device — but we are thrilled that the team at Armature Studio managed to really flex the powerful hardware to pull off the amazing graphical features that are so important to what makes Injustice such a unique experience.
With more than a hundred completely custom character models (and even a new PS4 exclusive model), six awesome DLC characters including General Zod and Lobo, and 60 completely custom S.T.A.R. Labs Missions, Injustice Gods: Among Us Ultimate Edition is truly an awesome deal. Whether it’s on PS3, Vita, or the brand new PS4, we’re thrilled to have had this opportunity to work with PlayStation to provide an incredible experience that is tailored to take advantage of your platform of choice.
Hey everyone,
It’s been an incredible seven years for us here at Insomniac on the PlayStation 3. And today celebrates that heritage with the release of our 10th game for the platform: Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. The epilogue to our acclaimed Ratchet & Clank Future saga, this game is a love-letter to our fans. It gets back to the classic story-based Ratchet & Clank adventure, with brand new weapons, villain, planets, and an all-new story. It’s a compact Ratchet adventure you can download via PSN or buy on blu-ray disc for a great price of $29.99 (MSRP). On top of that, all copies of the game come with an entitlement for a free download of Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest For Booty, so there’s even more value!
But don’t take my word for it. We’ve already gotten a ton of great reviews on the game. Check out Destructoid, Gamespot, and The Escapist for their takes on the game.
We’re really excited to close out Ratchet’s PS3 era with a game that we made for our fans. We hope you love the game. Head on over to the Insomniac Forums, or our twitter or facebook account to let us know what you think!
When the idyllic forests and glittering coasts of Redview County are screaming by your window, there’s precious little time to appreciate online functionality like Alldrive. Which, in a way, suggests how well it’s been implemented in the blazing-fast Need for Speed Rivals.
From the newly minted Ghost Games in Gothenburg, Sweden, Rivals launches alongside PS4 on November 15th. It puts players firmly behind the wheel of either a cop or racer in a massive network of roads, laced through boiling desert and rainy hills. Rivals made an impressive appearance at the PS4 launch event here in New York City, with a live demonstration of the Alldrive multiplayer functionality, and even a few perilous night races using PS Vita Remote Play.
With DualShock 4 in hand, I dropped into Redview — which was heavily inspired by the California coast — where several players were already burning through the map. Ghost Games’ Founder Marcus Nilsson was at my side as a fellow cop. No pressure. Pulling up alongside his beautiful patrol car, he started a pursuit event. One touch of L1 and we were in the event together, chasing after a group of racers that tore over dirt roads and asphalt alike. Neither menus nor load times separated the free-roaming drive and the multiplayer event.
By default, Need for Speed Rivals will place you in the drivable world of Redview County along with your friends online. But you can change that to a public setting to mix things up, or take on the adrenaline-pumping challenges solo. And there’s always something to do in Rivals, given that Assignments (cops) and Speedlist items (racers) dot the right side of the screen. Completing these activities will earn you better cars and game-changing upgrades, and they keep you locked into the thrill of the chase.
Both cops and racers have access to special tech that enhances the tactical variety of every race. Cops, for example, can deploy electrical fields, or fire off debilitating shockwaves that punch cars right off the road. Meanwhile, racers break the limits and laws with turbo boosts and jammers.
With 100 miles of drivable road — not including the twisting shortcuts throughout — there’s much to see and more to do in Need for Speed Rivals. And the team at Ghost Games has targeted a consistent 30 frames per second, along with native 1080p, which makes Rivals look quite stunning — especially at such high speeds. Furthermore, you can bring Rivals onto PS Vita with Remote Play. It only took seconds for the Vita to take control of Rivals, and then all the sights and sounds of Redview popped on the portable’s screen with surprising fidelity.
Need for Speed Rivals launches alongside PS4 later this week on November 15th. Whether you’re a driver with a whole crew of racing buddies, or a lone wolf hungry for a challenge, Rivals wants to keep your car running and your knuckles white.
Hey, doods! It’s your humble Prinny David from NIS America here to school you with a cohesive thesis on our upcoming title, Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc — a revised and revamped edition of the very first Danganronpa that appeared on PSP in Japan in 2010. The game is set to release on February 11th in North America, exclusively on PS Vita — just in time for Valentine’s Day! You guys ready to fall in love with some ultimate brutality?
In Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, you take on the role of Makoto Naegi — an excruciatingly ordinary teenager who one day finds himself accepted into Hope’s Peak Academy. This is an ultra-prestigious school meant only for the best and the brightest and basically anyone but the ordinary. Some of Makoto’s fellow classmates include Leon, the Ultimate Baseball Star; Chihiro, the Ultimate Programmer; and Sayaka, the Ultimate Pop Sensation, so what’s a guy like Makoto doing here?
Looks like Makoto’s got enough to deal with trying to find his place amongst Japan’s teen elite, but things get a little tougher when he suddenly falls unconscious and finds himself rudely awakened by an evil black and white robot bear calling himself Monokuma. He announces to the students that they’re all locked in, and the only way out is to kill another student and get away with it. Pretty much the beginning of every high school movie ever. There’s a catch, though – if you get outed as the killer, then you’ll face Monokuma’s deadly punishment, and if you do get away with murder, you’ll be dooming your other classmates to death.
Still, it doesn’t take long before your classmates start scrabbling for the outside and end up killing each other in the process. So much for the best of the best! Now it’s up to you to investigate each murder, hold forth in trial, and discover the psycho bear’s ultimate motive so you can escape from this forsaken high school.
The gameplay is similar to the investigative nature of the Phoenix Wright series, with a dash of 999 and Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward storytelling thrown in. You’ll begin each chapter in “Daily Life” mode, roaming the campus and speaking with your fellow classmates to find out what makes them tick. The more you get to know characters, the better your relationship with each of them will be, which can be improved by giving them gifts you think they’d like.
You might think, “Why would I need to be friends with these people? I just wanna get out of here!” and you could do that, but improving relationships unlocks skills, which come into play a little later.
After this benign period of how-do-you-do, someone always ends up a little murdered, and you’re quickly thrust into the investigative mode of “Deadly Life.” During this time, you’ll utilize the analog sticks or tap the touch screen to scour the school and crime scenes for clues. You’ll need to pay attention to every detail and conversation you have here, because once you’ve gathered enough evidence on what went down, Monokuma will gather all the students and begin…
The class trial. This is where you’ll employ all your gumshoe work in some fast-paced rounds of timing- and rhythm-based minigames. Your classmates will try to come at you with misinformation, but you’ll literally shoot their words down with Truth Bullets — facts that you’ve gained to dispute their lies. Now remember those skills I mentioned earlier that you gain from relationships? Here’s your chance to use them! You can equip skills like “Robot Jock,” which increases your Truth Bullet rate of fire, or “Lost in Thought,” which increases trial time limits — all to aid you in your quest for the truth.
As you hone in on a suspect, they’ll become more and more defensive and the gameplay will switch to a rhythm-based section where you’ll tap a button or the screen in time to clear the air of their protestations. Throw in some word puzzles and crime scene comics and you’ve got yourself the most high-stakes mock trial high school’s ever seen!
As you unmask the killers, you’ll raise even more questions. What’s the real story behind Hope’s Peak Academy? Why does this murderous little bear hate high school kids so much? And could there be an even more sinister force behind this twisted game…? Steel yourself against falsehoods and arm yourself with the facts — surviving high school has never been this deadly.
Keep an eye out for Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc in February, and remember: “One truth prevails!” Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to put on my deerstalker cap and investigate who stole my sardines…
Until next time — Prinny out, dood!
