#hatbasedeconomics If you've waited this long to finally play a game of Team Fortress 2, now may be the best time. Or at least the cheapest, as Valve is giving Team Fortress 2 away for free—forever—with the team-based first-person shooter now solely supported by microtransactions. More »

#freetoplayfreedom Now that Team Fortress 2 is free-to-play, what will you spend your disposable income on? Perhaps newly price-slashed items in the game's Mann Co. store! Many of those virtual items are on sale, just like tons of other Steam stuff. More »

Since Team Fortress 2 went free-to-play, the game has gotten a little less "team" and a lot more "fortress," while the "2" has been rudely ignored. Angry paid-account players are now using a mod called "Free2BeKicked" to ban all users with a free version of TF2 from their sacred, private servers, in what may soon come to be called Frontier Justice: Apartheid Edition.

Free-game players are demanding Valve ban the mod, but as it is used on private servers, Valve's hands are tied. The mod isn't all-exclusive -- anyone who buys an item from the Valve store can bypass its check and be considered a paying player, although according to Botchweed, it would be possible to create a mod to accept only full-game purchasers. Any player can still join an official server without discrimination, but we'd avoid any servers titled "Keeping the Kore Kapable: n00bs Welcome!"

It's summertime and THINGS ARE ON SALE. If only all our writers weren’t at Writer’s Camp they could tell you HOW AWESOME THIS SALE IS. If they wrote something witty about the Scout's new TOWEL you would probably say "I really want to go out right now and buy a towel for MY scout." If they said something sad and revealing about the character of the Scout's new pair of FLIP-FLOPS you would probably say "I care deeply about Flip-Flops, if only I had a pair to show my deep feelings for Flip-Flops!"

Alas, we have no such writer available. We have no one who can write about how these items ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FOR A LIMITED TIME. We have no one who can reiterate in a slightly annoying, but still somewhat funny way THAT YOU HAVE TO BUY THE NEW ITEMS BEFORE THE SALE ENDS ON JULY 11. Indeed, we don't even have two short sentences that would convey that KEYS ARE NOW ON SALE TO OPEN SUMMER COOLERS! See? That was only one sentence and it wasn't particularly short.

Note: The Scout is shown equipped with TWO miscellaneous slot items. We realize this is currently IMPOSSIBLE. After firing the artist responsible, we are now working on making that artist's vision a reality.

This is the box that Jordan Long will be locked in for seven days, as he travels towards Oregon.

One white t-shirt, one pair of pants, one pair of underwear, one pair of socks, one pair of tennis shoes, 28 protein bars, four gallons of water, a computer, vitamin D tablets, aspirin, wet wipes, three cooling fans, a pillow, five feet of tubing and two custom air-sealed containment units for waste.

All of these items are being been packed in a box...plus a person.

Tonight, Jordan Long will be locked inside of a crate. That crate will be placed inside of a truck and driven from Bald Knob, Arkansas to Portland, Oregon over the course of seven days. This is not an ordinary crate, though; there's a computer with Lord of the Rings Online installed. Long will be playing his LOTRO character, Adanwings, the whole time. He will not leave the crate.

Why someone would do this is an excellent question.

Long is a performance and video artist known for some extraordinary stunts. Here's what I mean.

Perhaps an even better question is why he'd choose to play Lord of the Rings online, of all things.

"I chose LOTRO because of my connection to it," explained Long over email. "I played the game long before coming up with this art piece. I love the books, and a friend got me into the game itself. It was a friendly environment that I found inviting. I'll be running mostly a Lvl 65 hunter and Lvl 57 warden throughout the performance. And yes, I play non-MMO games, including Team Fortress 2 and Portal 2."

This particular piece, which Long is calling "Box Shipment #2," is part of his exploration of trauma and human coping mechanisms. Long experienced trauma himself, leading him to develop these series of pieces, but rather understandably, he wasn't willing to divulge what happened.

"In a lot of my work I explore mechanisms that either I or others have used to deal with PTSD [post traumatic stress disorder]," said Long. "Video games are being used in different forms to combat the effects of the disorder. People find many ways to deal with their symptoms, and what works for one won't work for everyone. It's a subject that's close to me, but I study it from an analytical perspective. Otherwise it wouldn't be art; it would be therapy."

This is Adanwings, the character Long will be playing as in Lord of the Rings Online.

"Box Shipment #2" presumes there was a first box, which is true. That one was just an experiment, though, where Long was stationary inside of a crate over four days. No one surrounding Long even knew he was in the crate at the time, which was meant to explore his own reactions to crazy situations.

"Being in such a confined space accentuates that feeling of being so far removed from a world that's going on around you," he said, "AND the odd feeling of safety it brings with it, even when it's a scenario that terrifies me (like places I can't get out of)."

I don't know about you, but being locked in a box for any amount of time, with or without an online game to keep me company, sounds pretty horrifying. Even walking through the recreated Batcave with tiny, tiny hallways at Six Flags to reach the Batman ride managed to make me sweat, and getting locked inside a coffin while alive definitely ranks within my top five worst possible scenarios.

You'll be able to follow along with this experiment in real-time, too. Long has enlisted a fellow LOTRO companion, Townsfolk, to document Long's experiences as Adanwings inside the game, while Brandi Roberts, a friend, will be blogging about Long's reactions in the real-world. Updates on both will be available on www.jordanwaynelong.com.

There will even be a real-time GPS tracker, in case you need up-to-the-minute news.

I’ve spent most of the weekend playing Team Fortress 2. I haven’t done that in years.

I hadn’t intended to. Team Fortress 2 exploded into my life as a near-obsession back in 2007. Playing almost every evening, hour after hour into the night, even dreamed about it during the height of the passion. I used to wander around the maps on my own in private servers just to look at the artistry of the world, and watched countless hundreds of YouTube videos of how-to jump videos and devastating frag runs when not actually playing the damned thing. But then, as always with multiplayer shooters, I fell away from the servers, and as with all the other competitive games that came before it, I became a stranger.(more…)

Welcome to Stuff Friday! Without further adieu, here's some stuff!

The "Meet the Medic" Taunt
Capture a point. Shoot a guy. Walk ten feet. Think about walking ten feet and decide not to. Whatever the occasion, celebrate it with the Meet the Medic, a custom taunt that allows you to punctuate anything you do, no matter how trivial, with god rays, orchestral swells and an explosion of doves.

The "Schadenfreude" Taunt Pack
Science tells us that laughter is the best medicine. Put that theory to the test with the Shadenfreude taunt pack, now available in the Mann Co. store, which gives all nine classes the ability to laugh at a corpse and see if it gets any better. (You could hypothetically also laugh at non-corpse-related objects, we suppose. But what would be the point?)

Put Meet the Medic… On Your Wall!
Let's say you enjoyed Meet the Medic. Let's say you enjoyed it so much--and especially that one scene where the Medic walks out of his lab all cool with a bunch of doves flying around him--that you wanted to put it up on your wall. First you'd have to buy a big-screen TV. Then you'd have to buy a computer, connect it to the internet, and have the TV play Meet the Medic in an endless loop. Then you’d have to hire a butler to tell you every time that one scene comes up so you can go look at it. And don't forget laser eye surgery so you can see the image at museum quality. Total price: $140,000. Per year. What a bunch of crap, right? Now what if we were to tell you that Valve engineers came up with a better solution? Introducing the limited edition Meet the Medic lithograph, available now at the Valve Store. First come, first serve, folks!

Art
Man, is your wallpaper stupid. We're just guessing, because compared to the new hi-res, wallpaper-caliber Über Update art now available in the Artwork section, trust us, it's stupid.

Did you know that the Medic in Team Fortress 2 isn't even licensed to practice medicine? It seems he's rather fond of ... unconventional methods, some of which involve "Mega Baboon" hearts. Let's just say there's more to the ÜberCharge than you may have realized.

Team Fortress 2 has gone free to play, in a typically Valvian rug-from-under-our-feet move. While superficially a bit of a shock (albeit one a few people guessed), at the same time it makes perfect sense. Some four years down the line, ongoing sales of the game were surely pretty minimal, making the only real options to restore Team Fortress’s big goldmining potential either to move onto a sequel or larger, paid upgrade packs. Neither of these would have been popular with the fanbase (which isn’t the same as saying the fanbase wouldn’t have bought them, of course. You know you would have).

The other reason for the free-to-playisation, I half suspect, is getting there before someone else did.(more…)

In a move that will likely send a few shockwaves through the comparatively crummy free-to-play online shooter market, Team Fortress 2, Valve's hilariously goofy and still-popular online-multiplayer-focused shooter, is officially free on Steam from here on out.

FREEEEEDOOOOOMMMM!!!!

The announcement initially came as part of a Develop interview with TF2 project lead Robin Walker, and was later confirmed via press release late last night.

The free-to-play announcement comes as part of the massive "Über Update," which Valve describes as the biggest content update the game has received since the game's launch in 2007.

The only form of montetization TF2 will employ from now until eternity is via microtransactions. Players can purchase items from the game's store, but beyond that, the game is free, free, free.

How does all this rub you, the current, or prospective TF2 player? Free-to-play often has a bit of a filthy connotation to it, but given that this is Valve, and that TF2 is already a known quantity (an awesome known quantity, at that), it's hard to see how this could be anything but a good thing for the growth of the TF2 community at this stage of the game's lifespan.

I mean, I already own the Orange Box version of TF2, and I'm currently downloading the Steam version as we speak. Because seriously, why the hell not, right?

So we've probably all tried out at least some of the new weapons now, and most of us probably went for or found different ones, so I want to hear everyone's opinion.

Here is what I've tried so far:

Atomizer

I'm almost positive this is going to become a complete and total replacement for default bat when people aren't using Sandman, the bat is certainly useful in some situaiton but I think the utility of a third jump wins out. The fact that the damage penalty is really minimal doesn't hurt either.

Quick-Fix

I really like this Medigun, but it's still no replacement for the default. This is more for the side Medic, a lot like how a Gunslinger Engie isn't going to go out on his own on defense. It's extremely useful for keeping your team at full health, though it's a bit hard to break the old habit of just sticking on someone.

I think the Uber effect is going to be paired up A LOT with the regular Uber once people figure out how potent an Uber can be again when a Pyro isn't flinging it up in the air.

Tomislav

As much as I like this gun's design I can't say I'm a fan of it when it comes to my style of Heavy play. I like to stick to the front lines and push the battle forward and this gun is much more suited to a solo Heavy wandering around on his own. Head on you can really feel that 20% decrease, but in one on one I think the spin-up time makes up for it, especially if you can take them by suprise.

Also, it spins up almost instantly and is quite as shit until you fire it. I'd be surprised if the spin-up doesn't get nerfed to 50% or lower.

Hot on the heels of free: a comedy short. It’s Meet The Medic, which I’ve posted below. It’s the tender tale of the medical relationship between the medica and the heavy. It features pigeons, severed heads, dodgy accents, blood, blood, and a broken heart.

The details of the Medic update are here. He’s getting a new gun, a new Ubercharge, and an ability to see enemy health.(more…)
