#toys We've been complaining about the lack of Team Fortress 2 collectibles for months now. We even did it yesterday. That complaining stops today, however, with the reveal of a gorgeous statue based on the game's "Heavy". More »

Today marks the 119th (or so) update to Team Fortress 2.

We think that calls for a celebration.

Today we're shipping some significant changes to the item drop system.

  • Previously, we rolled randomly at intervals to see if you got an item drop. Now we roll to determine when your next item drop will occur. So you're guaranteed to find items at fairly regular intervals. The bulk of drop complaints we've received in the past have been from players having unlucky streaks, where they didn't find any items for weeks. That won't be possible now.
  • We've significantly increased the rate at which item drops occur, compared to the previous average interval.
  • There's now a maximum amount of playtime per week in which you get item drops. Playing beyond that amount won't find any more items. The amount varies, but if you play an hour or so a day you're good. Some of your unused time will rollover to the following week, so if you're an intermittent player you'll also be fine.

Celebrating the release of the first episode of Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse, Valve has announced an interesting promoti onal tie-in with Team Fortress 2. Starting today, anyone who pre-ordered The Devil's Playhouse or purchases it within the first week on Steam will get a special batch of items for Team Fortress 2. The three items, pictured above, were crafted by Telltale and include Max's pistol, Sam's revolver and -- bizarrely -- Max's severed head. The hat is purely cosmetic, and we have no idea what the stats are for the pistols, but who cares? Just look at them. If you like Team Fortress 2 and you like Sam & Max, it's pretty much a no-brainer.Buy Sam & Max on Steam, get items in Team Fortress 2

At Valve, we like to play games made by other people, mainly because a) we don't have to make them, and b) they're generally more fun than ours anyway. In particular, games made by other people don't have Pyros named Eric Smith, who makes our collective lives miserable on a daily basis in playtests. (If you ever wonder why features like "Pyro now gets assists for airblasting enemies into environmental hazards" keep getting added to the game, thank Eric. Not content with killing us by just holding down W+M1, he persists in finding bold new ways to get points by any means necessary.)

#pc One of the advantages of both Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 sharing an engine is that it's relatively easy to share content between the two. Like, say putting zombies in a Team Fortress 2 map. More »

We like us some Team Fortress 2 videos around these parts. We love the official Valve "Meet the" videos and we also dig fan-made awesomeness. This particular video falls in the second category and it could make you reconsider putting your own video on the internet for all to see. You see, it just might have trouble competing. Without spoiling the magic, we can tell you two things about the video embedded after the break.
The video is based on the recent suspense flick Law Abiding Citizen. The video is called "Law Abiding Engineer." Now watch it.

Got a great idea for a hat or weapon for Team Fortress 2? Valve wants to hear about it -- better yet, Valve wants you to make it. The TF2 blog reports that Valve has already seen plenty of solid submissions -- items you can get a hold of in today's update. If you're the creator of one of these items, you'll find a special version waiting for you in your backpack. Hooray for bragging rights!

And for you budding designers out there, don't just think of it as a way to get some experience under your belt, but think of it as a service for these guys. Heavy above always had an image problem (thanks, male pattern baldness!), but now he's feeling good and going out on dates like every night!

IT WAS PROPHECISED THAT A HEAVY AND A SOLDIER WOULD COME AND SAVE THE DAY
TWO MOTHER*CRAG*ERS EMERGED! KILLING NIGGAS DAT WERE GAY

TO TEACH A VALUED LESSON THESE BROS THEY HAD ASSURED
KILLING ALL OF TEAM BLUE, MAKING SURE THE CANCER WAS CURED
DEMO KNIGHTS AND SPYS TRIED TO REBEL AGAINST THIS POWER
BUT LITTLE DID THEY KNOW THAT IT WOULD BE THERE FINAL HOUR
WHEN VID AND LOAF, HEAVY OF BOXING AND SOLDIER OF STEEL
TAUGHT ALL THOSE MOTHER*CRAG*ERS WHAT IT MEANT TO BE REAL
EQUALIZER TO THE BACK AND KGB TO THE FACE
TEAM LOAF AND VID SHOWED THOSE *crag*S WHO WAS THE MASTER RACE

BUT THEN PEOPLE GOT WISE AND WENT TO TEAM BLUE
THESE *CRAG*ERS LOST VALUE AND WHAT IT MEANT TO BE TRUE
SO ALONE FOUGHT LOAF AND VID, 2 HEADBUTTING MOTHER*CRAG*ERZ
ULTRA RACING TRUCKERZ
BUYING WEAPONS STRAIGHT FROM TUCKERZ
THEY KILLED 8 OF BLUE AS ONLY RED OF 2

THROUGH THE MIDST OF THIS BATTLE, THROUGH THE INTENSITY OF THIS FRAY
LOAFSKZ AND VID INFERNO WITH LOW HEALTH SAVED THE *CRAG*ING DAY

Yesterday, we announced that Steam and all our Source engine games will be coming to the Mac. Sound too good to be true? Well, guess what: It is true! There are no catches! Sometimes life actually works like that. The bad news is that we've just truth bombed your hard-earned lie detector back to the stone age, and you'll probably lose all your money to the next international lottery scam that sneaks through your spam filter. Still, Steam on the Mac!

Dylan Loney isn't just a dude with an awesome name, he's also quite the Team Fortress 2 mod-tician ... which is a real word that we totally didn't make up. With a couple of custom maps under his belt, Loney decided to up the ante, so he rolled up his sleeves and turned Valve's class-based shooter into a speedy side-scroller.

The redesign was part of a contest for Interlopers back in December. Drawing inspiration from Canabalt, Loney created the complimentary mixture of TF2's characters and Canabalt's fast side-scrolling gameplay you see above. Actually, an image really doesn't sell it, so head past the break to check out some footage of it in action.

Seems pretty simple. The only reason you need to switch classes is to get passed an obstacle than continue. It needs to be more complex than that.
