Because during the course of the movie the boy already knows karate but is going to be taught kung fu by Mr. Miyagi instead of Karate. intreguing.....

uh no how the hell is it a prequal? It has absolutely nothing to do with the original Karate Kid franchise.

Because young WIll Smith gets vitiligo at the end and forgets kung fu so now he just knows karate. But then he forgets karate also. And everything else. And Jackie Chan was there.
