This is a pretty interesting story, albeit a sad one. This feature comes from a third-party dev that was working on the Wii U pretty much from day one. We get walked through the entire process of how a title was created for Wii U, learning just how confusing the entire process was. It sounds like Nintendo had faced multiple stumbling blocks during Wii U's development, which only made it harder for third parties to create content. Things got even worse when online implementation details came about.
From start to finish, it seems that neither Nintendo or third parties were on the same page with Wii U.
